While We Wait: Boredom Strikes Back

Eh, the guy never did anything to me. He was an active NESer, too, kinda sucks he's gone. We don't really number all that many anymore, ya know.

I'm getting a distinctly Tolkienian vibe here.

This community ain't dying.

Nothing's constant; its either growing or decaying.

Looking at the recent bumpercrop of newbs in my NES, I'd say it is growing; Spread the love!

There is definitely not as many active NESes around these days. Active NESes as in regularly updated. The number of entire NESers hasn't really grown to scale with the forum either. The playerbase seems to have shrunk, actually, according the polls that have been done to find how large they are.

Dying, maybe not, but stagnant definitely.

The things is, I think our blend of NESes are changing.

In the past (I may not be a subjective measure) there are a lot more slow, steady pace NESes that still flow in the background (update once a month); LINES was plodding along, N3K End of Empires was steadily moving along, Daft NES was plodding along. That alone provided a large amount of players.

Then we have a perpetually constant EQnes. However, where we used to have a mix of Boardgame/Story/Freshstart/altHistorical NESes which flow and ebb, we just have a couple of each which are active. My Classic Fresh Start is the only one to survive Xen's bump; Abaddons, MjM's, L_j and Mine, although mine did start later. Of the StoryNESes we have the Tournament and Sekai- so standard numbers, more or less. Boardgame we have TuxLife, Banana's Pirates. We also have a Daft Project going on!

As for more "Classic Updating" NESes, then I agree. There is mine (which you should join), TuxLife, EQnes, the new GameNES

Let's have a one month census lasting from start of winter break (Tomarrow) to the end (January something) with these catagories.

(Yes, I know all NESes need stories, but ones like Sekai or Zombies in Vanity City relies on them, while mine doesn't)

It can be a very slow process; I'm still not there yet.

Abaddon has been NESing for a long time and whether or not you liked him, he made substantial contributions to our games. I do not expect that he will be participating in any more games, his or those of others. His enthusiasm will be sorely missed.

So he's gone for good? :(

Poor guy. I hope he takes it well. *hats off to Abaddon*

I will miss him. He was one of the reasons I was in the NESing forum... dragged me over from forum games.

Bla bla bla. Slow updates are not a lack of updates. Just because some MODs start NESes and than stop updating them (YOU for example) because their bored/lazy/"The dog ate my homework" doesn't mean NESing is even slowing. There have always been MODs like that (you for example, it ain't your first time *loads of anger*) but there are also MODs that update slowly but regularly.

If anything I think NESing is becoming especially varied lately. It went through a story age, a board game age, a fresh starts age, but now I think its the most varied it has ever been in types of NESes and types of worlds (Magic, future, past, freshstart, Dwarfs, zombies, tournament thing, A NESLIFE *love love*and some alt histories).

erez does make a good point regarding your own NES MjM. Of course, erez's section is also one of the reasons you had a hard time updating...

I seem to remember a conversation like this many years ago on this forum.

I remember this conversation happening at least once every year, and one or twice I initiated it.

the link in Civ4 S&T is already helping... a few of the S&Ters are actively recruiting NESers ;)

I found his personality grating (and that tatoo Jesus Christ! what a mess), but he will be missed, he was always trying to bring people into nesing.
