Beware of anyone who encourages people to be suckers (forgive your debtors, turn the other cheek, etc)

Funny how I can agree with the two prior posts but then there is this one. . .which assumes mal-intent by people asking for kindness. The kind of kindness asked for by all the greatest prophets, messiahs, saviors, and even petty statesmen.

I'm all for kindness but I'm also for paying one's dues. Forgiveness is a slippery slope. I prefer to deal w folks who don't constantly need it.

The subject is student debt. This is debt accrued by people who have never even made money nor paid bills; they have nearly as little understanding of this undertaking as an elementary student . Debt forgiveness and not paying the dues that society has railroaded them into accepting is fine by me.

Forgiving is a personal choice. You can manipulate/convince someone to forgive someone else, but you really can't force them.

That is cute and all and bloody stupidly obvious.

The lack of forgiveness part just makes you a jerk, it doesn't make you smart or anything.

I would hope college bound kids have a bit more understanding than that. If my daughter has the same financial literacy at age 17 as she does now at 10 I'll be pretty disappointed (with myself).

Just what young adults need, someone removing their financial responsibility. May as well forgive CC debt too because society pressures us all to be consumers. This is not at all getting at the root of well, anything. Why should college cost so much in the 1st place? Why isn't the quality of 13 years of education enough to prepare an adult for life in the real world with or without further training? Nah, lets just throw a bunch of money at the problem. I think it's a weak solution that sends a bad message.

I'll keep playing tit for tat (or a slightly more generous version thereof) & you be all kind to people who trespass against you. I'd rather be thought a jerk by chumps than be thought a chump by jerks. :)

That's one of the best ideas I've heard come out of your mouth (fingertips)... and that's saying alot , since I like so many of your ideas. What a great way of selling student loan forgiveness. :goodjob:

Aww see now you've embarrassed me
I'll respond with another pithy quote, "praise from the praiseworthy is beyond all rewards"

Being told about it by an adult is a world away from actually experiencing it.

CC debt is different because it's simple consumerism/materialism/greed and has tangible results. Student debt is not any of those things.

Why should college cost so much in the first place?

So you admit there's a problem, but screw the kids who overpaid for it anyway?

'cause the administrators need new private jets, those 2018 models are so ancient!

It's their own fault for being born into a poor or middle-class family! If they weren't so lazy, they would have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and been born into a rich family.

So, somewhere in between Berzerker's claims of discrimination against heterosexuals and Trump being a president of peace™ we were discussing student debt and selfishness, right?

Sanders is right: Republican tax cuts cost more than forgiving student debt
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has joined the Democratic presidential candidate in making a contrast with the 2017 law

A 2016 plan for free college tuition didn’t go far enough for Bernie Sanders. In this election cycle, the candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination is promising to forgive all outstanding student loan debt.

Although Congress has the legal power to write off such debts, voters might be skeptical about the government’s financial power to do so.

In 2006, total student loan debt stood at $481bn. Since then, total student loan debt has more than tripled, now standing at $1.6tn.

A counter-argument put forward by politicians like Sanders and the New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is that Republican tax cuts have cost the government more money than would student loan forgiveness.

These claims are correct.

Estimates of the cost of the Republican Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 vary. But the most recent and reliable numbers come from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which is the federal agency whose job it is to provide budget information to Congress.

This year, the CBO estimated that the new tax law would add $2.3tn to national debt by 2028. Those losses would partly be offset by economic growth of about $461bn meaning that overall, the tax cuts would cost the country $1.9tn.

Without policy change, the US student loan debt crisis is projected to keep growing. Each minute, approximately $157,000 of student loan debt is repaid. But in the same minute, according to data from the Federal Reserve, $191,000 of new debt is borrowed.

Agreed. That's why kids should have credit cards & pay bills in high school.

So you admit there's a problem, but screw the kids who overpaid for it anyway?
I admit there's a problem, I think name-brand clothes are a rip off too that's why I don't buy them. I'm not screwing anyone.

That is a damning cartoon, short sweet and to the point. Unfortunately the electorate have all been convince they are going to be the next billionaires for some insane reason.

The only way the experience could be complete is if they were sent out to work, too.

Agreed definitely. Kids should work in HS. Ideally have a job and be encouraged to do small entrepreneurial activites.

I've worked since I was 13. Kids don't seem to do that anymore.
