2020 US Election (Part Two)

Does the name of the ballot actually matter? I thought states just elect a slate of electors, who then go to the electoral college and vote.

I very much doubt anybody but Harris would become President. She has decent favourability ratings, and there is nothing particularly wrong with her. Her job is literally waiting to take over for Biden.

Technically, nobody is voting for the candidates, anyway, but rather for members of the Electoral College. Those could just choose someone else in case a candidate dies shortly before or after the elections.

This happened in 1872; newspaper publisher Horace Greeley won states but died before the electors met. Grant won in a landslide, so it had no effect on the election itself but that’s how that played out.

A woman from Trump's reelection campaign was just on the BBC and I was only half paying attention, but I'm pretty sure she just said that we shouldn't pay attention to what he says, and should instead look at what he's done.

We shouldn't pay attention to what the President says.

From a representative of his reelection campaign.

should instead look at what he's done.

Which is like nothing but bad stuff. I mean he was pressed during the debate on his Tax cuts, his one major piece of legislation, and he tried to blame Biden for not preemptively repealing it.

President Donald J. Trump: (16:05)
Chris, let me just say something, that it was the tax laws. I don’t want to pay tax. Before I came here, I was a private developer, I was a private business people. Like every other private person, unless they’re stupid, they go through the laws, and that’s what it is. He passed a tax bill that gave us all these privileges for depreciation and for tax credits. We build the building and we get tax credits, like the hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue. Which by the way, was given to me by the Obama administration, if you can believe that. Now the man got fired right after that happened, but that’s-

Chris Wallace: (16:40)
Vice President Biden, you want to respond?

Vice President Joe Biden: (16:42)
Yeah, I do want to respond. Look, the tax code that put him in a position that he pays less tax than on the money a school teacher makes is because of him… He says he’s smart because he can take advantage of the tax code. And he does take advantage of the tax code. That’s why I’m going to eliminate the Trump tax cuts. And I’m going to eliminate those tax cuts.

President Donald J. Trump: (17:06)
That’s okay.

Vice President Joe Biden: (17:07)
And make sure that we invest in the people who in fact need the help. People out there need help.

President Donald J. Trump: (17:13)
But why didn’t you do it over the last 25 years?

Vice President Joe Biden: (17:16)
Because you weren’t president-

President Donald J. Trump: (17:18)

Vice President Joe Biden: (17:19)
Because you weren’t president and screwing things up.

Biden says he is going to eliminate the Trump tax cuts, and all Trump can say is okay. Imagine if Obama said to Romney, yeah sure repeal the ACA. No attempt to defend his one legislative accomplishment on its merits (well it has none, but that hasn't stopped him before)

You know what I find so pathetic. All the conservatives going 'oh people should be nice to Trump for getting Covid'

He literally only has himself to blame. He and them are also still engaged in trying to kill hundreds of thousands of people, by spreading Covid, and taking their healthcare.

Plus remember the whole Clinton health scare?

Has Pence been practicing better social distancing? The REEEEEEEEEEs if Pelosi became president would be most delectable.

I took a big can of whip cream and squirted it in my mouth every time a Democratic princess cried after the orange assclown shoved it in their chosen avatar 4 years ago. Oh wait I didn't and... that's still sort of less gross than hoping people die.

Pence looks very healthy and isn't that old (compared to the rest).
I really doubt many people want Kamala as potus. I would bet that far less would vote for her if Biden got out of the way.

Maybe he won't even have to steal the seat, if Trump actually is sick/dies.

If Biden gets sick before the election Democrats could still nominate Bernie if they really wanted to win. But remember this election is Trump versus Not Trump. There's very little that could happen on the Democrat side that will change what happens in November.

Trump will recover, just like all the other world leaders who have contracted it. He has the best healthcare in the world. At least this proves that hydroxychloroquine isn't effective since Trump stated he has been taking it all along.

The crazy thing is, that I don't think this does anything to raise public awareness of the danger of covid. To the contrary, I think that Trump will recover and then may just spin his own recovery as proof that the disease isn't a big deal. My inner conspiracy theorist is reminding me that he could do this whether he actually contracted it or not.

Oh boy, it's got that Conjunction Junction ring to it. That's clever. Not quite as jivy.

I thought so too. Very catchy. The downside (upside?) is that with Trump in quarantine we may be spared at least one if not both of these terrible debates.

I... I couldn't bring myself to watch it. 70 interruptions from one side, just... no. I tried to get into WWE, it just sits there with Dragonball in the "I can't do this" pile of media. I get through about the intros in a wrestling match and 4 minutes of aggressive constipation in Dragonball, so I figure that's about the same as catching soundbites from the debate.

From George will today.

...For the first time in Earth’s history there are, globally, more people over 65 than under 5. In 2016, more than a million more U.S. votes were cast by people over 65 than by those 18 to 34. However, the elderly, the whitest age cohort and the most receptive to Trump, are a crumbling Republican foundation: In 1993, Florida became the first state in which deaths outnumbered births among whites; in 2018, that was the case in 26 states.

This is one reason for the GOP’s downward spiral. In the six elections between 1968-1988, of which they won five, Republicans won the popular vote by an average of 8.2 million and 9.58 percentage points, and averaged 417 electoral votes. In the election they lost, Gerald Ford in 1976 came closer to defeating Jimmy Carter than Mitt Romney came to defeating Barack Obama. But in the next six elections (1992-2012) Republicans lost the popular vote by an average of 4.3 million and averaged just 211 electoral votes.

Hillary Clinton’s 2.1% margin of victory in the popular vote while losing in 2016 was larger than John Kennedy’s popular vote margin, 0.17%, while winning in 1960 and larger than Carter’s, 2.07%, while winning in 1976. Since 2016, Trump, with malice toward all who were not components of his popular-vote minority, has shown an indifference to arithmetic that his supporters probably consider evidence of his manliness,...
