Is there any particular reason for the way they organized things or why they're a certain color?

color is the country the website is from. Supposedly, the closer the websites are, the more links and traffic there are between them. Closeness also shows related content. For example, imgur.com is right by reddit, flickr, tumblr, and 9gag. They're all in the general neighborhood of Twitter and Facebook

Meriadzek Island, as of the year 2000. Based on this geologic feature in the Celtic Sea.

Emerged from the sea as an island in 1922. All reasonably proficient speakers of Latin alive at that time in the world were magically teleported there by forces unknown. Initially a League of Nations mandate territory with limited self-government, the island was fully occupied by Britain during WW2. Full independence as a republic gained in 1949. The population reached 500,000 inhabitants in the year 2000, of whom about 80% speak Latin as their native language (largest linguistic minorities: French, Spanish, English speakers). EU membership talks deadlocked due to disagreements over fishing rights, the government's refusal to accede to the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, , strict language policies and the island's reputation as an off-shore tax haven.

Whats the name of the capital...and how good is the economy?

Nova Roma, it lies near the largest river's estuary. About a fifth of the islanders live there. Economic situation is reasonably good, even though the islanders started off dirt poor. The conomy picked up during the British occupation, when the island hosted Allied air and naval stations (used to combat the U-boot threat, and as a transfer point for US soldiers going to and out of Western Europe). Fishing, agriculture and mining provided employment for the Spanish and French refugees from the continent and paved way for their gradual integration into the society. Later the island took advantage of its 'exotic' nature and profited on tourism. Financial services and high-tech industries have gained prominence over the traditional sectors of the economy since the late 1980s. However, the financial crisis hit the island hard in 2009 and the fact that it uses the €uro as its currency may be a source of uncertainty. So far, it has managed to navigate the storm without having to ask for bailouts or anything like that (mainly because the local government doesn't give a damn if foreigners lose money in its banks).

Whats the ruling party and how can I get a job there?

It's a democratic republic, more or less (by that I mean the system is a bit weird as the founding fathers kinda tried to emulate the republican ideal of ancient Rome, with some interesting consequences), so multiple parties. You can immigrate on a permanent basis if you can demonstrate functional knowledge of Latin. Otherwise there are only shorter-term work permits.

More importantly, are the women allowed to sunbathe topless?

Depends on where :p Terra Latinorum isn't very conservative nowadays. Most natives follow the New Latin Church (an offshoot of Catholicism, in practice independent), but agnosticism/atheism and romantic Classical neo-paganism are on the rise. Since a significant portion of the original inhabitants were Catholic priests, the island had a bit of a conservative mindset in the beginning. This eventually gave way to a more mainstream European liberalism in social affairs. Women were in short supply early in the island's history, and the need to attract them led to above-standard position of women in the society.

I also assume its full of doctors.

Yup. Let's just say the initial demographic composition of the island included very few working class people. Which is why the beginning was so hard for the islanders and why the treatment of the Spanish and later French refugees sometimes bordered on modern-day slavery. On the other hand, education and intellectual pursuits are highly valued in this culture and that has contributed greatly to the island's rapid economic rise after WW2.

Luckily I have Latin in third grade! Must learn it!

Interesting... but does this mean they can sunbathe topless?

Lol at Sporcle being on the far reaches of the map.

I am just wondering... how quickly long would it take for local vegetation to take hold?

A long time. Not to mention that the creation of enough topsoil to sustain agriculture would take even longer and that it would take some time for the salt to be washed away from the mud. I of course assume the island was created through the use of magic (you know, all sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from it) with pretty standard European Atlantic coast flora and fauna already present. Also, those who raised it prevented the displacement of water from creating epic tsunamis that would utterly annihilate the whole western coast of Europe ;)

How it came to be remains a mystery. The islanders' take on this is that one of the founding fathers, a British scholar who later took the name 'Marcus Justinus', caught a goldfish while on vacation in Rome, which granted him his wish that Classical Latin language and culture were revived. Who knows, maybe they're right ;)

The Goldfish should be on their flag, and the name of sports teams and stuff. :p

A map I made a while back. Click on it for its context (and sweet dreams, suckers!):

I don't think you can hotlink an attachment to a post from another forum. :p
