Altered Maps XII: Not to Scale

That's neat, I knew they were parts of Japan but I never seen a map of it like that before.

I wish they made a region around Shikoku connected to Johto+Kanto and perhaps even Hoenn rather than random stuff like Unova.

I don't like how Unova doesn't look directly like any part of a real-world map like the other regions do. :/

However I think the next Pokemon game should be contiguous to SW Unova and have a Latin American theme. I've made about a thousands maps with a Louisiana/Caribbean map or a Mexico map SW of Unova. I'll post one later.

I haven't played the Unova games yet, but IIRC it is based off of the New York City area.

Parts of it are (and other parts are based off other places, like Cape Cod and Las Vegas). However, what I mean is that if you look at a map of Unova, you can't find a place on Earth that looks remotely like that with the shorelines and rivers and everything, unlike every other Pokemon region in the main games.

The above map if from Black and White II; the newest games introduce a little less than twice as many cities and towns.

Is that actually true?

Edit: As in is that the actual regions of Japan they based it on? And you can visit all of those regions in the games?

I only added those squares marking which regions are which. And yes. Kanto is actually the name of the region in the Tokyo area, Johto is based on the south of the Kinki region, and obviously Hoenn and Sinnoh are Kyushu and Hokkaido respectively.

But I doubt that the regions are copies of the actual regions. :p

Yeah? I really only have it on there because it's.. well.. it's one of the big european capitals.

I'm not against scrapping Paris and adding Vienna at all.

I wouldn't want to talk you out of going a city you'd probably enjoy. It is a great city and worth seeing, it just doesn't seem to fit into your itinerary very well. Also taking the right route through Austria and Bavaria can be the textbook definition of "picturesque"

There's nothing wrong, too, with doing a "grand European tour" kind of thing- I did something similar, about 2/3 the length and more Central European, a couple of years ago- as long as you don't turn around afterwards and consider Europe "done"

One can never be done with Europe, or America or anywhere really. I have still much to see of my own country, let alone the rest of Europe or even the world!

On my last 4 trips I spent maybe 1-4 days in each city and that seemed to work well. A grand tour like I'm proposing of the main western European capitals seems like it should warrant a bit more time per city than that.

And I know that if I go to Paris, I'll just want to see the main sights and move on, so that would require maybe 2-3 days of time.. London? I just really want to go to a Chelsea game, see big ben, buckingham palace, and that's really it. I mean, I haven't done my research, but.. I will really probably want more time to explore cities like Berlin, Prague, and Amsterdam.

It really seems like some cities I am going to fall in love with and want to spend more than 2-3 days in, and some I will want to just move on from.. So maybe a trip like this can't really be planned planned - aside from a very rough guide, an arrival date, and a departure date.

I also wonder if I could guy some sort of a month-long rail multipass that would allow me to jump from train to train after having paid just 1 fee for the whole trip.

Oh, of course not. I have plans to at some point do a tour of Scandinavia, as well as a separate visit to Croatia, Hungary, Austria, etc. The only places I've seen so far are pretty much most of the main sights in Poland, and tiny bits of Germany.

There is! It's called an Interrail Pass, that lets you use the entirety of the European Rail network- http://www.interrailnet.com/interrail-passes/interrail-global-pass with one ticket. I think with certain rail companies, (particularly in Germany, I seem to recall) you have to reserve which train your getting on, but only about an hour beforehand. It's what my friend and I did, I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

I can pretty much guarantee every city you go to you'll want to stay longer (even cities I haven't been to, such as Vienna, I went to Salzburg instead). As I recall 3 days per city was about the minimum- any less and it feels rushed, but that does have to be weighed against the timelimit of the railticket, and the cost of the accommodation (most hostels I found to be around the £20-25 a night if you shop around)

That country's borders look decidedly phallic.

Cotonou is the real capital of Benin. Porto-Novo's just the fenced-off reservation where they keep their Afro-Brazilians.

@Warpus: Why Rotterdam? Of these places you have, it seems the least interesting by far (and this is from a Feyenoord fan!)

My parents where very enthusiastic about Rotterdam after they did a citytrip and I must say I did enjoy the boat tour when I was there myself.

That said, yeah... why Rotterdam? I would have chosen Amsterdam and The Hague myself.

I have a friend who lives there who I haven't seen in a long time.
