Ask a Kiwi/New Zealander?

Sheep jokes are so old ... they are hardly worth mentioning, these days.

Well... some were already there; and had been for a good thousand years. So there wasn't much choice in that. Half of that lot fought with the Company and the other half fought against it and the other lot. Which to this day makes for interesting family gatherings on that side.

1. Do you have any Russian blood? Why that Russian flag, is it just Civ related? Is there any Russian-speaking community in NZ?

2. What are the attitudes about the immigrants in general, and what are the immigration laws in particular? Do you have to be from UK to be welcomed? Do you see any influx of immigrants, to begin with?

3. What is the general popular attitude about the religion (I mean piety level) ? Is it as bad as in UK, or more or less okey as in US?

4. Are there any good research universities in the birthplace of Rutherford? By the way, do you guys consider him British or Kiwi?

If you look at his signature, you will see he is playing a game as the Russians, hence the avatar.

Well, one does not necessarily rule out another. NZ and Russia are so unrelated that there has to be some inspiration for a Kiwi to play Nicolas :) (not the most famous monarch in Russia, by the way).

edit: That experience.. a HUGE difference from American airports, where you're treated like a criminal.. No offense to Americans reading this, but your airports suck

None taken. Some of us hate it just as much as you do.

Have you ever been mistaken for an Australian?

That's not the reason; though racism and some degree of particularism did play a part. The simple fact is that Colonial Office was hostile to the notion and domestic opinion was tepid too, as a result the merger never took place though it wasn't abandoned until the late-1910s. This in evinced in the concessions that were built into the Federal framework to make allowances for New Zealand potential entry. The best example of this is Commonwealth Franchise Act 1902 which gave Maori the right to vote thus putting the racism issue to bed. I've reproduced the text here for your perusal:

The Second Reading is also instructive, because you can see the difference in opinion between what Australian politicians though of Aboriginals as compared to Maori. It's kind of stark...

Can you give me links to those quotes?

1. Do you have any Russian blood? Why that Russian flag, is it just Civ related? Is there any Russian-speaking community in NZ? - Playing Russia in a forum game

2. What are the attitudes about the immigrants in general, and what are the immigration laws in particular? Do you have to be from UK to be welcomed? Do you see any influx of immigrants, to begin with? - Prefer people with skills and/or money, but we take all sorts, including me - A Dutch-born Kiwi.

3. What is the general popular attitude about the religion (I mean piety level) ? Is it as bad as in UK, or more or less okey as in US? - Christians have been declining every year, however, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, etc has been increasing. Atheism is also increasing. But if you are talking about Christianity in particular, that is more relaxed in general.

4. Are there any good research universities in the birthplace of Rutherford? By the way, do you guys consider him British or Kiwi? - We consider him a Kiwi. As to Universities - don't know.

Gallipoli? How important it is for New Zealanders? It is believed here that it's really big there? - Still very important and recognised every April 25 - Anzac Day

We're pretty hospitable to everyone. I'm not familiar with the immigration laws or ststistics, though.
3. What is the general popular attitude about the religion (I mean piety level) ? Is it as bad as in UK, or more or less okey as in US?
That depends if you're talking about in general, or at high school where I spend most of my time... :)
4. Are there any good research universities in the birthplace of Rutherford? By the way, do you guys consider him British or Kiwi?
There's no independent university at all in Nelson, but University of Canterbury have a campus there. We tend to take as much credit as we can get for Rutherford. ;)
Gallipoli? How important it is for New Zealanders? It is believed here that it's really big there.
It's considered to be a really important event and the commemorations are really big, but in general it's confined to the time around Anzac Day (25 April).
Have you ever been mistaken for an Australian?
I've never left New Zealand, but if I did I think I probably would. :p

What has been the media reaction to the cricket Test series thus far? And, as a bonus, will Chris Martin ever make a Test fifty? ;)

Meh ! ... I don't follow cricket.

What sort of Kiwi are you? I thought every time they had it one over the Aussies, they would be gloating. What about rugby?
Don't follow that either ... except the RWC.

My sporting interest was in motor-racing, but when they made all the cars the same as opposed to different makes and models here in AUS and NZ with the V8 Supercars, I lost interest in that too. Group A Motor Racing were the best days for me.
Do you know any Maoris?
Only in my role as a CAB interviewer where I help them with their problems they come in with.

Yeah ... Lyttleton as well. Heritage buildings are simply been knocked down as they are too costly to preserve.
