Because We Have a Problem: 2016 Forcasting List

I really don't see why it should be a big deal that Rand Paul copied some lines from a (Public Domain) Wikipedia article in a speech.

I think it is much more damning that he admitted to intentionally sabotaging other medical students in order to help him do better relative to them in the school's competitive exams, and that he encouraged other students at his alma mater to use the same tactic.

Irrelevant of what I think about it, it seems Republican primary voters largely agree; Rand Paul hasn't been significantly hurt by this. I would argue his response is more disturbing/less presidential--the "just leave me alone" comment, for example, doesn't sound like a good crisis manager in action.

I don't think Rand Paul's base are the sort who would be troubled by academic misrepresentation. THAT'S ELITE TALK

Unrelated, but when will Nate Silver start writing again?

He's back at his old domain name and hiring people. I think he's going to be more sports-focused now, but it's looking like he will dip back into political stuff for 2014 at least.

It's been two months since the last post on his blog, and that was just a vacancy, not something with political content. :gripe:

Now only the the Atlantic is telling me about Liz Cheney.

It's not just sports, but it's going to be less political focused, for sure. He's hired some talented journalists from the WSJ and the Guardian, and it's supposed to go live early next year I believe.

I totally applied for a job helping to analyze college sports data btw. They said they're going to employ a huge freelancer pool.

That's good to know! I feel like I've learned most of my nitty-gritty political statistics from him and Sam Wang.

I just realized the title is misspelled of this thread

So, Brian Schweitzer announced his intentions to get the media to pay more attention to him. On Steve Kornacki's show in response to question about whether he will run for president in 2016, in the literal last two minutes of the broadcast, he said that visiting all 100-some counties in Iowa is on his bucket list.

Real subtle.

I like Gov. Schweitzer, I could definitely vote for him.. Despite his whole Montana senate race fiasco -.-

While the Supreme Court hasn't selected its candidate yet, rumor is that they have selected the party they are going to vote for by a 4-3 decision. It would have ben 5-4, but Sotomayor and Thomas were barred from voting pending a deeper investigation of the id they presented to vote.

Iowa has 99 counties (but 100 county seats, since Lee county has two). But if he said 100-some counties, then on his "to do" list, he should put "reviewing Iowa's county divisions" ahead of visiting all 100-some counties.

I should note that I was paraphrasing his quote and did not verify the number of counties. In any case, it's a pretty clear indication that he is trying to gin up attention and donors for a presidential run.

It's usually bad form for a politician re-elected in 2014 to immediately turn around and announce a presidential bid; those folks are likely to hang back until 2015 to enter the ring. Guys like Schweitzer (who chose not to run for the vacant Senate seat in 2014) or O'Malley (he cannot run in the 2014 gubernatorial election but could potentially return afterwards, Maryland is weird about term limits) will likely be the first out of the gate, possibly even pre-empting Hillary Clinton.

Schweitzer is my favorite of all the Democratic Presidential hopefuls.

Interesting, given that you seem to lean to the American right (unless I am seriously misreading your posts or confusing you with someone else). Is it more his personality or his positions on some issues like guns and energy?
