CBob03 Germans in Tu-tus

Thanks for update-edit, Overseer. So I only get to play a little bit of war. :( Well, maybe the turns will go faster that way.

I took a look at the save last night via MapStat and CAII. We are the brains on the planet in addition to having surplus luxuries and resources. I think we can trade those for MAs vs. the Stupid. It would be nice to just peace with them (the Stupid), but I don't think that will happen.

It looks like we'll learn Combustion on this IBT and build Theory of Evolution. I don't know which will complete first. We're okay if we learn about Combustion and THEN build the ToE. We would have nothing invested in the next tech. If we build ToE first we will learn Combustion and something else. But I'm unclear on how our beakers are allocated on the third tech. I think that whatever beakers we have is just applied to the next tech; I would hope that it takes the percentage of Combustion we have learned to this point and gives us the same percentage of completion on the third tech.

Which all means I'm considering delaying the completion of ToE until the IBT of Turn 1, giving us a turn of 0% science toward Atomic Theory (and a lot of gold) before we learn the tech.

204 cities!

Combustion will come first, tech advances always are the first IBT occurences, followed by wonders. We will get 3 techs in a single turn. I usually don't cut it that close, but this time I had to. I could not get Combustion in 4. Don't worry about not playing enough war, India is usually a fairly stout opponent. They may even live long enough to face panzers:evil:

Ooh, just the excuse I was looking for. I'd like to take ALL of the Greek and Indian land to show them that we're not to be trifled with

Ooh, just the excuse I was looking for. I'd like to take ALL of the Greek and Indian land to show them that we're not to be trifled with
'Oh, Alexander.

'Gandhi.

'Can we talk for a moment?'

:trouble:

Combustion will come first, tech advances always are the first IBT occurences, followed by wonders.
Techs, wonders and normal builds, in that order.

I hadn't paid attention to the order since, except for this Wonder, it hasn't been an issue for me.

Thanks!

lurker's comment: In that case, it should be OK if Combustion and ToE come in on the same IBT. Have you decided which techs you want with ToE?

Preflight
Talked to the civs by size.
The Dutch (14) will sign 4 MAs (vs. Aztecs, Greece, India, and Japan) and give us WM and 38 of 38 gold in exchange for Monotheism.
America (13) signs 4 MAs (vs. The Stupid) and gives WM and 22 of 22 gold in exchange for Democracy.
England (11) signs 3 more MAs (Overseer had already one on India) and gives WM and 1 of 1 gold for Democracy.
Inca (11) signs 2 more MAs (for Japan and Aztecs) and gives us WM and 11 of 11 gold.
Iroquois (11) signs all four MAs in exchange for Navigation. They are broke.
Russia (11) joins the crusade against The Stupid and gives WM and 3 of 3 gold for Steam Power.
Mongols (11) get involved in combatting The Four Fools and give us WM and 100 of 100 for Medicine.

So now we have a world war against Stupidity.

Cycle through the cities, hiring hardhats. No geeks were fired, since that might stop us from learning Combustion on this IBT.

I still need to update my city list.

Incas have 10 cities, not 11; my bad.

Check the border cities; all look fine and well defended.
Time to see what our new friends can do.

Hit Enter.

We lose an Infantry to repeated Indian Cavalry attacks and a redlined Archer also.
Greece acts like we are still their main focus.
The War Elephants enter our territory,

We learn Combustion, begin Atomic Theory.

Good News
1355_Kuara.jpg

We raze Kuara and gain 1 slave.

We found Frank Duval on some jungle; grows in 10, library in 40.
We have two more settlers, but I may want them for combat operations.

Need to pay attention to worker stacks next turn. Some stacks lack the ability to clear jungle/marsh and road in one turn, which slows the game down. If the tile is roaded, the whole stack can move along roads/rails into the next tile to clear. Without a road, only adjacent tiles can be cleared. And in that case, the game doesn't move the entire stack into the next tile. Instead, it moves each unit individually into the next tile; a much longer process. Anyway, there were a few stacks like that but I wasn't able to get them fixed this turn. I'll try next turn.

Cycle through the cities. changing geeks to taxmen (we are -8 gpt at the moment) and then to hardhats in the corruption zone. Each hardhat contributes 2 shields per turn to whatever building is being built. This is done after corruption is calculated. Which means that an outlying city that nets only 1 shield per turn (95% corrupt) can hire a Civil Engineer and now have 3 shields per turn going to that building. For a university in corrupt city, this drops the time from 100 turns to 34 turns for completion.
Plus, this is easier than pop-rushing.

We need to get smarter. But we need culture buidings even more. If we can keep the rest of the world at war, we will stay the tech leaders. Once we get all the culture buildings built that we want, we can change the hardhats to taxmen/geeks as we need.

We go from Mass Production in 6 to 11, and -8 gpt to +31 gpt.

[IBT]
We lose 4 battles, 3 workers and win 1 against India (19 of 26).

2 1360 AD

Greeks are moving a stack towards an open city; I'm waiting until they get into flat land before giving them any attention. Easier to hurt and kill on plains than hills or mountains.

Most of our moving units I send back to #Franz Ignaz von Beecke to regroup. Nothing really special about the city; it is just the highlighted city choice when you press Control+Shift+G. I'll make stacks of like units first and then see what tasks need to be done with those units. It makes the turn longer but I know what units I have to work with on the turn, so I don't mind the initial reshuffling of units.

We catch 4 Greek units on flat land; redline them with Cannons and leader fish. Four attacks, four wins and Horsa reappears! (23 of 30)
We have 3 unfilled Armies right now, so a 4th one makes no sense.
Send Horsa to G P Telemann, stock exchange -> Intellignce Agency in 34, rush with Horsa in 1.

I see that the Greek city of Argos is built on Horses. However, I don't see any Saltpeter inside Greece, so Cavalry might not be a Greek unit.

Our very next attack on a redlined Indian Cavalry generates another MGL, Rommel (24 of 31).
Send Rommel to Helmut Lachenmann, vInf -> factory in 8, rush with Rommel in 1.
We kill 3 more exposed Indian Cavalry (27 of 34).

We build Johann Crüger to help us get to New Karachi of India; grows in 10, library in 40.

Battle of New Karachi (9) of India

Rommell 16/17 vs. rCav, Rommell wins (34 of 42).

We kill another lonely Indian rCav (43 of 52).

Gotta gota bed; get sleep.
Save game as CBob03_AD_1360_NearEnd.SAV.

And I'm back. I see we took five cities from India so far, mostly from the NW part of India's empire. I used a lot of cannons to damage India's units that had invaded us and artillery to pound some of the cities. We still have 20 artys that have not been used this turn and two fresh armies, along with a settler.

The Greek forces are headed to Gottifried Homilus, which is undefended and near the Greek border. Greek forces are all foot units and have to leave the hills and mountains in order to attack the city. Due to the terrain and lack of roads in the mountains Cavalry cannot attack the city next turn. So these units we can ignore for the rest of this turn. We'll kill them soon enough.

There several places we could damage India; Indus (9) and Ganges(9), in southern are tempting; in the north Bengal can be placed in the range of artillery with a combat settler, but we don't have any workers left to improve the roads, so that doesn't work after all. So I'll aim for Ganges. I'll let that serve as the limit of our eastward expansion against India; if we take everything west of Ganges we will have reduced India by half.

So we build Thomas Anders southeast of Yakutsk; grows in 7; library in 40.
We send in a vPIke to serve as artillery spotter.

Battle for Ganges (9) of India
Barbarossa 18/18 vs. rMusket 1/3, Barbarossa wins (44 of 53).
Barbarossa 16/18 vs. eCav 1/5, Barbarossa wins (45 of 54).
Barbarossa 15/18 vs. rSpear 1/3, Barbarossa wins (46 of 55).

Good News
1360_Ganges.jpg

We raze Ganges and deny 3 Furs to India; we gain 4 slaves.

We send our artillery back to von Beecke and fortify them until next turn.
We wake some Pikes and Longbow to claim Indian slaves.
We block roads from India and get ready for the IBT.

I've been using our slaves and workers to support the advance into India so they haven't been able to improve the lands we've cleared. I hope that can change.

Turned off 'Show Our Moves' on Preferences. Wow, I should done that turns ago. No watching stacks of units move tile by tile across the screen.

We are tied with Greece for first place in culture at 27862. We grow at +766; Greece at +183.

Get all of our units gathered around von Beecke.
10 Elite units (8 eCav, 1 eLongbow and 1 eArcher).
2 Promoted Elite Cavs.
10 vCav.
1 vInf.
20 artillery.
33 cannon.
2 trebuchet.
54 unused slaves.
19 unused workers.
1 settler.
3 Armies (2nd Knight, 1st Knight and 3rd Teutonic).
There are other armies in the field awaiting orders, but most of these are wounded.

Greek units are still in the hills and have not come down close to Gottfried Homilius. I don't think they are being clever, but that city is still undefended.
Need to retake Atico.

Incas have a lot of cash, 616 gold. We want it. So we talk to Inca, who are Gracious towards us..
The best deal is for Electricity. Inca will give WM, 209 gpt and 616 of 616 gold.
We take the deal.

And I save the game at this point; CBob03_AD_1365_Early.SAV.

We have one settler and about nine Indian cities to capture/raze/replace.

We'll build a forward city new New Bombay in no-mans-land and then we'll foucs on New Bombay, Indus, New Bangalore, St. Regis and Atico. I'll rush a few settlers for next turn.

We rail to the new city site and then build Gerd Zacher 2S-SE of New Bombay. Gerd Zacher grows in 10; library in 40.
We then rail for our artillery.

Our Military Advisor says we have 23 artillery, but I only have 20 in the staging area. I found them, hiding with the stack of cannons. We have 27 total artillery.

Good News

x St. Regis has one happy Iroquois citizen, so we start a library.

We sent the unused artillery, 15 of them, back to the von Beecke staging area.
We wake the cannons, since we have some short range bombardment ahead.

Battle of Atico (3) of India
eLongbow vs. rCav 1/3, Longbow wins (57 of 67).
eLongbow vs. rCav 1/3, Longbow wins (58 of 68).

Good News
1365_Atico.jpg

In x Atico we hire a hardhat and start a library, due in 12.

The other Indian cities we want, Hyderabad, Bengal, Karachi, Dacca and maybe Bangalore, are too far from the front unless we used Armies to attack. We have three Armies at full strength and no way to get artillery close enough to any of these cities this turn. So we'll pick off stragglers and protect our workers for the rest of the turn.

Minor Skirmishes (all Indian)
vCav vs. rCav 1/3, we win (59 of 69).
eLongbow vs. rMusket 1/3, Longbow wins and Promotes to *Longbow One* (60 of 70).
MGL Barbarossa goes to von Beecke. We have no Small Wonders to build and don't need another empty army.
So we'll build a factory in Richard Wagner, our capital, that nets 33 shields per turn. It is our third most productive city and lacks a factory.

Richard Wagner Army in 12 -> factory in 7 -> rush with Barbarossa -> factory in 1.

vLongbow vs. rCav 1/3, Longbow wins and becomes Elite (61 of 71).
vLongbow vs. vCav 1/4, Longbow wins (62 of 72).

Cycle through the cities, looking for settlers.
We now have 3 settlers that will be produced 'naturally' next turn. We could squeeze out a few more by changing some builds to settlers, but I'll wait on doing that.

We have nine unused vCavs; we can fill two Armies with them, but then they cannot make any MGLs; so the Armies stay as empty shells this turn.

The Greeks won't be doing much this IBT; Japan might be fiesty but I don't think so; we're pretty well defended in case India attacks our slaves and workers.

4 1370 AD

We are now first in culture, 28669; Greece is at 27952. Our culture per turn is +807.

New Bombay, Indus and New Bangalore all have resisting citizens. Big deal; if they flip we can recapture them cheaply. No troops will stay in those cities this IBT. If they don't flip they will starve anyway.

Only one Indian city is within easy striking distance this turn; Pune, just southeast of New Bombay. A ridge of hills is between the two cities but that is not a great obstacle.

We have 8 eCavs, 1 eMace and 3 eLongbows in the staging area. A few more elites are scattered across the map.

We have 4 settlers.

We still cannot reach the northern set of Indian cities this turn, so we'll move a combat settler into Indian territory between Bengal and Hyderabad that will let us use our artillery on those two cities next turn.

Battle of Pune (6) of India
eCav vs. rMusket 1/3, Cav wins (64 of 75).

eCav vs. vLongobw (Greek), eCav wins and Promotes to *CavalryThree* (72 of 84).
Richtofen goes to George Frederick Handel; vInf in 3 -> factory in 9 -> Richtofen rushes the factory in 1.

And the Greek flat forces are gone.

India wants to talk. I wonder why? We'll listen, if only for a little bit.
India wants peace, no suprise in that, but won't give up any cities.
We've too many MAs to even consider peace, so we tell India to go jump.

We lose a Longbow to an Indian Longbow (71 of 84).

We raze Bengal and gain 3 slaves, which quickly make a road for MGL Hengest.

Hengest goes to Ernst Richter vCav in 4 -> factory in 11 -> Hengest rushes factory in 1.

Before we take on the Greek land units, six Greek ships are near Gustav Merkel, way up on the northern tip of Celt land.
We redline all 6 ships.
Now to clean out the Greek units that are threatening Gottfried Homilius.

vCav vs. vRifle 1/4, Cav wins (81 of 94).
vCav vs. vCrusader 2/4, Cav wins and becomes Elite (82 of 95).

Still some Greek units in the hills and mountains around here, including a settler. But most of them are on an unroaded mountain and cannot do much this IBT.

Back to India bashing.

Battle of Karachi (5) of India
3rd Teutonic Army 19/19 vs. rMusket, Army wins (83 of 96).
Hengest 18/18 vs. rSpear, Hengest wins (84 of 97).

vCav vs. rMusket, Cav wins (89 of 102).

We upgrade 9 cannons to artillery for 1080 gold.
We load 4 vCavs in Richtofen leaving one empty army at the moment.

And the save is >>HERE<<.

We have a bunch of slaves and workers that I did not use.

Given how long it took me to play these five turns, especially the last half of them. let's do this. Feel free to pass the game on after 5 turns or 5 hours of playing time. If that means we pass the game around a bit more, that's fine. We won't get as burned out.

We need to plan when we switch to Republic so that we can pay for our building upkeep.

We have Greek vermin in the mountains up north. I've been waiting for them to come down to the plains where we can kill them easier. And so I focused on India more than Greece.

India is alive at our pleasure; Greece is still a threat. Even though we are the most cultured now, we need to have twice as much culture as Greece when we reach 160,000 culture points. It might just be easier to eliminate Greece altogether.

Per CAII, we have an expected Victory Date of 1890 AD, down from 1924 AD at the start of these turns. Slowly and surely we reduce the time we need. :D

Looking good. :)

Are there such things as draft farms? You could just grow food and disband the units for shields as necessary, if you couldn't whip (for example, another city is in tundra and would grow too slowly while the draft city is already done with its cultural improvements).

Have you guys started the whipping process though? 'cause I would very much recommend joining and whipping that many slaves you are generating during war. :mischief:

Rather, we should join and whip the native workers - that way, we have no unhappiness caused by the joined citizens, and our support costs (for once we revolt to Republic) go down.

Expected win date is down to 1872 as of turn 2 of my set. The war continues, though progress against the Indians has been slowed by the extensive jungle.

Are we still going to switch to Republic? I wonder If staying Feudal might actually be easier. I hope we don't get a 9 turn anarchy if we do revolt, that'd be bad. What is the maximum length of anarchy? I have never seen more than 9 turns.

I don't have a good answer, so I'll ramble instead. :D

I would like to stay in Feudalism, if possible, because it means we don't have to consider revolting to Republic.

But, as we get more libraries, temples and universities, we also have more upkeep to pay. Right now we pay 381 gold per turn in building maintenance. That won't change when we change governments, but it will increase as we add more buildings. And we'll need to keep our tax rate high in Feudalism to pay for the upkeep.

In Republic we'll have to pay unit support for our military/workers but we can lower the tax rate and still pay for building upkeep.

I don't know if I'm reading CAII properly, but if we changed to Republic now we would increase our gpt from 168 to 309. We lose the ability to convert citizens into buildings, however.

We have 160 German workers we can convert into temples and libraries and such, with 173 slaves (that require no upkeep) to drain swamps and the like.

Once we get tired of beating up on Greece and India I expect we'll focus on whipping cities to get all the cultural goodies we can. 160 workers equals 3200 shields in the corrupt cities which converts back to about 20 cathedrals.

We may want to take some time to decide where to add citizens in order to whip them. Add them, whip them all, and then revolt to Republic.

If we must revolt in order to pay upkeep, why don't we consider Democracy? I never see anyone using it in SGs, and it would be nice to take the path less traveled.

I switched to Democracy one time on a 100k culture run, and it worked well. I had income of 1400k per turn(science zeroed out) and used it to rush culture buildings in my useless tundra towns. Of course, I had a Religious civ, with 1 turn anarchy. It's doable wiith all the luxes and peace on earth.

I'm open to the idea. I haven't been a Democracy since way back in my Civ II days. Just have to be sure no city stays in distress for two turns or the whole shebang comes falling in, right?

This is the last common save we can all get to. We get a little more gross income with Democracy over Republic, but look at the unit upkeep. Feudalism: 0 gpt; Republic: 62 gpt; Democracy: 337 gpt.

Granted, 160 workers will become institutionalized; so that might make the numbers a bit easier to swallow.

We'll still need a military to project power and to protect ourselves for the minions who could think us to be weak. I wouldn't want us to switch to Democracy if we had to disband most of our military.
