The "pro-vaxxers" successfully suppressed most research and discussion about other tools to fight the pandemic. Now we all suffer the consequences.

Vaccines were prioritized for use without proper studies being completed. But any attempts at trying other pharmacological interventions, re-purposing products that were in use and have a known safety profile in humans, should not be done because there are no RCT yet? That's a double standard.

Are we really going back to the "Ivermectin was suppressed and hidden!" nonsense again? As I pointed out last time this came up, there's been more than a dozen clinical trials. The ones with proper controls and double blinding (and no fraud) consistently show no effect. There are still some ongoing and others recruiting. Far from being suppressed, this is a bizarre amount of research devoted to something which has already failed repeatedly to produce results. Or is this a reference to hydroxychloroquine? Because we went round and over that one far more than the evidence merited as well. It's not a case of "there are no RCTs yet". There have been RCTs - and they showed it doesn't do anything useful. It is completely irrational to expect there to suddenly be successful ones in the future.

The issue is not that Ivermectin has an unknown safety profile, it's that it has been consistently shown not to do anything useful re: Covid. Scientifically it makes no more sense to take it than literally any other random pharmaceutical that hasn't been shown to be actively counter indicated in Covid cases.

Worse, some pharmaceutical products which were novel were quickly authorized and even peddled by authorities, before failing. But repurposed drugs are discouraged outside studies. Why?

Except that there have been tests for repurposed drugs, as discussed above. They just didn't work. And it is generally frowned on to advise unproven (or proven to be ineffective) treatments. I'd have thought someone as quick to shriek "liar!" as you are whenever anything doesn't pan out exactly as predicted or expected would be in favour of that.

The argument also does not make sense from the point of view of the profit-motivated greedy big drug companies: why would they suppress an effective drug that they already know how to make in mass quantities?

Mississippi has just blown past NY death per capita and seems on track to claim the number one spot from NJ. The Northeast was hit hard by the initial wave when people had much less understanding of the virus, and are generally colder states. Louisiana is not far behind. I doubt the hurricane will help matters.

Meanwhile, the governor is babbling nonsense about eternal life.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves believes religion has a lot to do with the region’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a Thursday, Aug. 26, fundraiser at the Eads home of Shelby County Election Commission Chairman Brent Taylor, Reeves spoke to several dozen Republicans.

“I’m often asked by some of my friends on the other side of the aisle about COVID … and why does it seem like folks in Mississippi and maybe in the Mid-South are a little less scared, shall we say,” Reeves said.

“When you believe in eternal life — when you believe that living on this earth is but a blip on the screen, then you don’t have to be so scared of things,” he said, but added: “Now, God also tells us to take necessary precautions.

“And we all have opportunities and abilities to do that and we should all do that. I encourage everyone to do so. But the reality is that working together, we can get beyond this. We can move forward. We can move on.”

Because the event was outside, masks were not required under Shelby County Health Department guidelines. But there was little social distancing.

Closest I’ve come was signing up for a vaccine trial, but my participation got terminated due to logistical issues. Case rates were too low in Canada by the time my appointment came up, and the widespread availability of approved vaccines combined with the Canadian government’s abject failure to support vaccine trial participants (which is, AFAIK shared by pretty much every government other than the UK) by committing to not discriminating against them made participant attrition rates very high.

Finally got my second shot today!

Went and was confused about all the people in fancy dress, until I realised it was gay pride. The event ambulance was doing double duty as a covid walk-in. My second shot was fabulous dahlink!

Covid is just ravaging through conservative talk show radio hosts, aka old guys with multiple comorbidities, who hawk quack cures and sit in a box for hours with other people.

This isn't even all of them.

It's all the people who aren't in on the grift. The GOP Texas Governor. He had three shots of the best vaccine, tested daily, and given expensive treatment immediately. He doesn't believe the bullfeathers, he just says it for the Rubes. These guys are true believers, unvaccinated, and dying for it. It's actually pretty telling exactly where the line is on the grift pyramid.

There are probably hundreds of thousands of people, whose daily rage yeller is now dead. I wonder if that will register in their heads, or if they just keep trucking along.

At this point it may be better to just let Delta spread through the un-vaccinated population as a way out of this mess.
