Anyone here ever work or is working now in the restaurant field? I use to be a line cook and even though I hated bosses looking over my shoulder eeyer 5 seconds it was actually not to bad! I think I will make a social group for us!

I used to work at my university's cafeteria. I even had a food handlers permit and everything. I have much respect for those who can work in the industry for a living. I was just done after 3 years.

I started working at a Lone Star Steakhouse as a host and busboy in July. Not a great gig. Work itself has gotten better, but I really don't get the sort of hours I'd like.

When I realized it involved 1. Washing up 2. No unlimited free food 3. No Ronald on site, I was long gone.

Food service, especially private sector retaurants, combine hard work, max pressure and high stress with low pay, no benefits, no respect and no future.

I worked at local McD's off and on all my life - whenever money was tight. I always ended up quiting.

I worked in my college cafeteria/catering company for a year, and delivered pizza/washed dishes in high school. The pizza job was one of my favorites...the catering company sucked so bad.

Everybody should work food service or retail for at least a few months, so they'll never be douches to those workers ever again.

I started out as a cook and a waiter. I've managed a few different restaurants since then.

Union! Union! Union! Although I think I had an easier time than those who worked at McDonalds and other well known franchises.

I had a similar experience at a Wendy's. The job overall was ok, but they wanted me to go out and hose down the driveway every morning.

My first day was in the middle of winter, and the hose had so many holes in it that the pressure coming out the end was almost non-existant and I wound up soaked in water that froze to me.

I never came back after my first shift.

I worked at resteraunts from the age of 17-22 or so.

Some gigs were pretty good (I worked at a locally owned Pizza resteraunt that was a fun place to be - still miss my old coworkers), but most sucked pretty bad. I even had a guy I worked with at a Taco Bell threaten to kill my dog. He was 17, so I couldn't hit him without fear of the added charge of assault on a minor.

Now that I have a couple of degrees and non-food related job experience, I'll never go back unless I'm truly desperate.

Im currently a barista at one of the oncampus coffee shops. Its become a lot more stressful now that the university has privatised the food services department. Its funny how much changing from a generic coffee house to a starbucks dramatically increases the volume despite having the same number of students walk by each day and prices increasing.
