Well, the first verse of the German anthem is neither banned nor it is racist! It is till the German national anthem, although only the third verse is sung it is still the anthem. Also it was written in 1841 on (the then British) island of Helgoland. In this time Germany was departed in over 30 states. So it only (more or less) means having one unified Germany in the area of the German Federation, although it was misinterpreted and misused. However because it was not political correct in 1949 there was a compromise only to sing the 3rd verse. However the whole Deutschlandlied is still the anthem.
Right on, I stand corrected...and vindicated! :D

Can't say I've ever listened to a Dead Kennedy's song in my entire life! (I wondered what you were talking about with "DK" earlier; Denmark? :D) The "über alles" reference comes from the banned (because it's racist) first verse of the German national anthem. I've appropriated it, tongue-in-cheek style, for my location, because I guess I have a warped sense of humour...
Well, hopefully your bother-in-law will let you have a listen to the new AFI album.
Yeah, the Dead Kennedys wrote a song called "California Über Alles" to highlight the errors of someone they felt was a "hippy-fascist," Californian Governor Jerry Brown. What's a hippy-fascist, you ask? Well, the lyrics explain it better than I could: "You will jog for the master race/Die on organic poison gas." I should probably continue this via PM if you're interested? I also believe that the song alludes to the hijacking of the punk movement by self-styled "Nazi punks," which the DKs were vehemently opposed too.
A good novel about the "Nazi punk" scene is American Skin by "Don De Grazia."
California Über Alles was released in 1979 as a single.

Interesting. So only the third verse is all that is sung, but the whole thing is considered the national anthem now? Poetic, since I heard somewhere that the Third Reich just sang the first verse, but considered the other two verses part of the national anthem as well :). Pretty much the exact opposite of how it is now, I guess.

Well, no-one ever, ever sings all four verses of "God Save the Queen". In fact most people don't know it has more than one verse at all (and most people don't actually know even that by heart!). Although, technically, "God Save the Queen" is not the official British national anthem.

PCHighway, in the Nazi time indeed the first verse and after singing it the so called Horst- Wessel- Lied was sung. That was the German anthem. The Deutschlandlied was only sung with the first verse as law and freedom were not politically correct in that times.
In 1949 there was no national anthem. The Allies had forbidden the Deutschlandlied, but that did not stop the constitutional assembly nearly to sing it after the constitution was made. Because of some resentiments of several members it was not played, but the song "Ich hab mich ergeben", another partiotical song. However in the meantime there was a discussion between president Heuß and chancellor Adenauer what national anthem to have. Heuß thought the first verse of the Deutschlandlied was not political correct, the second too trivial and the third not enough for an anthem. So he ordered to make another anthem. Adenauer however was not the opinion and on one occasion just stood up and said all should sing the third verse. As all did he made already facts and Heuß had no other chance to accept the Deutschlandlied as anthem, although only the third verse is sung. That status quo was kept in 1990 by v. Weizsäcker and Kohl.
However in the final of the soccer WC of 1954 the Germans sung the first verse, which lead to an angry president Heuß, who openly and harshly critisized that.

My brother-in-law sat down this afternoon for another go at playtesting v1.9 of the Lord of the Mods in Hotseat Multi-Player mode. He brought along the AFI disc, but as my daughter was having a nap, we didn't listen to it! :( Perhaps on another occasion. Right now it's the 1989 King's X offering in the player...
