New NESes, ideas, development, etc

Not exactly. For starters, the best comparison would be Firefly, because everything is restricted to one solar system (albeit one with many planets), and the similarity is greater if, in the end, there is no magic.

Well, its a universe I know nothing about (last space opera I watched completely was B5), but it all depends on the setting. Will there be a preview thread?

Well, I'd rather they all play lords, if only to make it more manageable. However, they can RP as whoever that want. As for your voluntary hierarchy idea, that's the plan. I probably won't allow rejoins, and if I do, it won't be immediately, so preservation will be key.

On the other hand, I'm not even sure I'll make one area of land 'richer' than another. Instead, players can improve it over time. Having defined rich area will have the first people to arrive as the powerhouses, which is sort of annoying, as it isn't really skill, and instead luck as timezone.

If so, perhaps the players are "new lords" in some freshly conquered hither land? (Maybr Right after a destructive and all consuming civil War?) This will ensure the land is "equal" at the start with some starting issues (rebels lawlesssness etc. ) while also allowing for good expanses of land.

Or richer land is by definition smaller and most players have either a new and an old estate nearby, a massive new estate, or inherit several old estates from "traitors".

Settlement management NES where the setting is....hmmm... well, we have a few choices:

-Dwarf Fortress-ish fantasy world filled with all sorts of things eager to kill your settlers.
-Some made up region analogous to what people faced when first colonizing the New World... kinda.
-Maybe in a made up political body consisting of city-states that (at least initially) work together. This could allow NESers to compete more with one another, although it strays from the original concept a bit.

Thoughts? Anyone interested?

DFNES?

If you ever need help designing clever and deadly dangers, you should PM Immaculate and Seon. I dunno why I told you that, since I just made everyone who plays your NES's life so much harder. :3

@Arrow Gamer: When players are choosing the land, they will not know whether they are rich or not. The gold is in the ground, but probably the first players will prefer areas with rivers, lakes and the coast. Now, when it comes to a fantasy world, we must be careful not to go out of focus. I do not know if it is possible to place dwarves and elves in political games. We can also make standard ground without richest areas, so everything will depend on how the players so develops its strategy. But the game will start with a king NPC, which requires that a kingdom is already done. Thus, one can not take land belonging to the king, making the distribution of land only feasible if there is not a kingdom. So, the beginning of the game will treat occupy the land and develop, then the players will use their power to subjugate others, then a hierarchy is formed over time. At the end of this phase, I'll call Phase Historica, we would have a world occupied by one or more realms and their subdivisions. Thereafter begin Phase intrigue, it is the focus of the game. In this method, much more laborious and takes the focus of the main goal, we will have a world generated the most natural way possible. But I would recommend a kingdom pre manufactured, already separated into duchies and counties. Players choose a county or a duchy (the first players will have advantage) and would focus on the intrigue, who is the principal.
What do you think?

I've had an idea for a NES that I might actually be able to commit to running! I'll post details as I come up with them.

I have thought about the possible use of biotics/magic/whatever in my suggestion for an RPG. I believe that, maybe, it could be restricted to those that only have a certain background or job (the equivalent to class). All players would have the same stats, and then, depending on their job, they would have a couple extras to indicate their speciality.

As for jobs, well, there are several possibilities. I picked these from the Firefly Role Playing Game, but there could be changes as well.
- Pilot: really good at controlling ships of any kind.
- Mechanic/Engineer: best thing to repair and fix the ship, or to build things.
- Medic: specialized in healing him/herself or others.
- Security: put a gun in his hands and see him/her sort out the others.
- SocialiteDiplomat: the ones that speak with others.
- Merchant: able to buy and sell anything.
Opinions?

Well, are we having a ShipNES? Good choices if so.
For completeness sake you could replace the name for Socialite for something like "Communications Officer/Operator", "Science Guy" or even "Captain"...

No, it's not a cooperative ShipNES. The idea is that each player has its own ship and then travel around the 'Verse. So, unfortunately, there is no Firefly-class ship for you. :( (Although someone could actually try to make a game about players on a Firefly!)

In Firefly, there is the Wren-class ship, which is a small one-man ship that works well for the idea I have, and players would also be able to eventually modify it to suit their purposes (putting weapons on it, expanding its interior, etc.).

So, basically Freelancer? :p

Yeah, more or less. It is confined to a star system, because there is no FTL travel here (it does help if the space is restricted). A good half of the planets (perhaps more) would be on the CHZ (Circumstellar Habitable Zone), while there can also be space stations surrounding a gas giant, underground bases that are mining one of the inner planets...

I do have an idea about the system having 20-some planets (the Star System in Firefly RPG had 43 planets in total), perhaps with 12-14 having a biosphere and the rest having stations or something like that, as well as there being artificial space stations orbiting the star like if it were a planet.

Also, to get the missions, all ships would have access to an internet-like connection, and one of the available things would be the pages where the different clients post their "quests". This solves the problem of having to come down to a planet if you don't want to, and also allows for trading, especially when it comes to buying (you buy something and tell the seller to send to your PO Box on a certain planet :D).

I thought about doing a cliche Star Trek style cooperative shipNES. Beam me up, Me!

I think I remember someone trying something like that when I first joined.

I might be. I've attempted to play DF and after a while of newbing it up, I gave up and played Towns instead.

Here's what I have in mind. I finished Bioshock Infinite a while ago, and I was thinking about what other possible cities could exist. The only thing that seemed plausible is an underground city, which doesn't sound great on the face of it (what would it be? Portal with people? I'm not keen on that). Then I thought to myself, well, what if a lot of above ground stuff was simulated so that it felt like the surface. Then I thought to myself, well that sounds a lot like the Sidhe mounds from the stories of the fey folk. Now this could be just story-line related, but I'd like to see a post-human NES where the various fantasy creatures are reclaiming the lands. As far as I know, this setting isn't used often.

Thought: Settlement management NES involving the colonization of a new planet. Ships with supplies may come infrequently, have to build towns as more colonists are dumped in, build arms to equip policemen (and militias to supplement Mother Country armed forces - or to fight them!), the whole bit. Maybe multiple Mother Countries start colonies in various far-flung parts of the world, with new colonies being started every so often.

So, I was thinking about the logistics of my NES, and realized I have a problem. I do most (90%) of my stuff for these forums on my iPod, for various reasons, but that presents a problem: the map. I need someone to edit the map for me, and make one. I tried creating one, but it failed. Miserably.

So yeah, if anyone is willing to do this, and maybe even be the NPC GM, that'd be great.

This isn't that different from my idea  I guess we can bounce ideas off each other then. :)

I'm planning on getting mine up and running ASAP. Hopefully that doesn't intrude on your plans?
