Any reason why we should stick with the singular form when making unit names?

Also, im going to divide the roman legion instead of having just the standard legionary, im going to use Kingboat's Legionary for the Hastati, Firaxis' Legionary for the Principes, and the Scutatio Pikeman (dont remember who did it right now) for the Triarii, and of course the Velites too.
Are these names plurar or singular? Im guessing velites is plural of course, but why does hastati have one 'i' and Triarii have two, if they're singular then whats their plural form?

Ok thanks, I guess if we wanted to use plural forms for unit names we had to change lots of stuff in script.txt and maybe others.

So whats singular for principes? Principe?
And maybe Triari with just one 'i'?

i never liked the singular names of units they gave the impression that it was one guy heading down the italian peninsula to sack rome, it really bothered me. To remidy this i changed the unit experience(sp?) to say:
Conscript Division
Regular Division
etc...
