Putin actually good for US

Well Kaiser Wilhelm II won. Emperor Meiji did pretty well for himself too.

You can't "win" Russia. You can only weaken it until it collapses on it's own, but you can't really claim to conquer over Russia and rule over it's vast territories. Only Russians can do that.

Probably.

Until they collapsed into multiple tiny tribes, yes.

And even then, we'll have to appoint for things like Timurids, Golden Horde, etc etc.

(Then again, most of my historical knowledge comes from EUIII so take me with a grain of salt).

Weren't the Mongols the primary factor in the rise of Moscow? Wonder what would have happened or if the Russian provinces would have united without the Mongols

They'd get the Germany treatment - they'd be in a state of disarray for some years, then some state will get ridiculously rich/militant and buy off/conquer the rest of the states.

For me is similiar situation from WW2 (yeah I see your tired and annoyed faces:D)...USA with weak leader, demilitarized Europe, the former empire with inferiority complex and totalitarian empire on East with great potential.

How is the modern West less totalitarian than the Soviet Union of the time?

By modern "totalitarian empire" you mean China? Then how is the West less totalitarian than China?

And by modern "former empire with inferiority complex" you mean Russia? Double LoL

Hitler was also "more of a politician and less of a military leader". So in other words, we just wait for him to take a few more countries, commit ethnic and/or ethnic genocide, and then trigger WWIII?

If it is all the same with you, I think waiting for that is not the best course of action.

I question the basis for assuming that Putin is not a competent military strategist, or that he doesn't listen to one that reports to him. At this point I don't think there's any evidence either way - when is the last time Russia (or the USSR for that matter) fought in a shooting war? Afghanistan vs the Mujhahideen?

They'd been fighting in, and failing to win, in Chechnya from 1999 to 2009, and even now it's not entirely pacified.

Georgia 2008. In fairness, that was Georgia's fault.

Where did I say Putin was not (or that he was) a competent military leader? My comment was that imf Hitler, he was more of a po,itical animal.

What is interesting is that most of the "justifications" for Russia's actions is that "ethnically" Russia has rights to the land, despite the political decisions made. Sounds exactly like the argument Hitler made for the areas of Europe he invaded. Is that really the road you want to go down?

Sorry, it was an inference on my part. That aside, you and I are pretty much on the same page here...

Crimea gives me much more of a "Sudetenland" vibe, than anything to do with Kossovo. *shudder*

No one suggested Putin for US Presidency yet?

Sorry for the typing errors - just getting used to using my fat fingers on a tablet, especially before my coffee kicks in.

And yes, I would prefer if Putin were NOT competent.
