Did he have a defeat notification come up? And can you be sure that he doesn't have a colony somewhere? They don't come up on the trade menu if they haven't been discovered by you somehow, and it looks like there's more land that he could easily have settled to the northeast towards the white CS.

If they have a colony somewhere, that would explain it. If there wasn't a defeat notification, it's almost certainly that. If there was, it's unlikely that a colony would have had enough pressure built up to flip a city back to resurrect him, but I suppose it's possible. Keep playing and exploring; if it turned out that he doesn't have a colony, then it must be a bug.
Ok, that's what I'll do (keep playing). He did not have a defeat notification come up (like the screen with his defeat words) which I found odd but thought it'd have something to do with Kilwa being under Ottoman power. And also no Era score saying Congo will not stand the test of time! Although now that I think of it, it's kind of nonsense, because I recall I've once (in another game) released one of Saladin's cities from someone else and after he was gone from the game, he came BACK into the game. Weird....

@PiR
I have conquered is capital per se, but I understand what you're saying. You're right and I had not thought of that.

Found the little sucker! That was a strange place for another settlement... well, thanks for the help @PiR @Linklite

background: I'm pretty terrible at the game - I can often win on King but not always.
Are there any posts/guides (or youtube videos) I should read that cover some of the fundamentals for playing better? I have recently learned about
  • locking in district costs
  • I should chop and harvest a lot, in the early game and new cities
I'm still terrible at making coherent plans. I feel especially lost from the Renaissance Era onwards but I'm sure I'm just unaware of how bad I'm playing the earlier eras.

Should I be micro managing my first few cities?

I always play on a Tiny map. These days I enable
  • secret societies
  • barbarian clans
  • distasters = 1

Thanks in advance, Civ Fanatics is a great resource

Been playing Barbarian Clan mode lately and had two questions I can’t seem to find answers to anywhere online.

1. Does anyone know the formula for tribes progressing towards city states passively (i.e. not counting when you bribe or by a unit)? I heard it was based on food but I can’t for the life of me figure it out, seems like the bars go randomly and maybe speed up later in the game. I am doubting the food idea because often a clan will turn into a city state out in the ice which should take hundreds of turns if it was food based.

2. Did they remove the chance to get a tech boost when dispersing a camp? I remember getting a boost now and then when I first tried the mode but haven’t done so in my last 5 games despite clearing multiple camps early on in all of them.

I think I read about such a bug but only when the mode is activated, maybe you can check in the Bugs report subforum.

I always use barbarian camps since they fixed the issue with barbarians not spawning after classic era. I could swear I get the tech boost.... Maybe the tech had already been boosted through something else (friendly village)?

The tech boost when dispersing barbs was definitely real. Once I even got Military Engineering, so I am sure it was not an accident (did not build and Aqueduct or capture a city that turn). But like I said have not seen it happen in months, so I wonder if it was just a bug that got patched without mention. Or maybe I have just had bad RNG rolls lately...

Still wondering about whether Barbarian to CS progress is linked to food.

There must be a minimum of 3 tiles between cities and it makes sense not to have more than 6 tiles between cities generally since cities can only reach up to the 3rd tile from its center and doing so doesn't allow another city to be built between them.

My question is, does it ever make sense to not to earn one superior era even when you're close and it's easy to do and it doesn't contradict another goal ? Does it ever make sense not to pursue or to avoid a superior era from the start ?

Cities can make use of tiles beyond the third ring. They just cannot build districts there or work them. But you can make improvements and gain the benefits from them, such as additional housing or strategic resources.

What benefit is there to combing units into armies or corps? Doesn’t it lower your military score, making it more likely AI will declare war? I know it offers consolidation but seems to be a net negative? I play passively, so maybe that’s why I don’t understand it.

Why can't I fix this district? It got damaged by a storm, and then I tried to rebuild/fix it, but it went for 10 turns then said 999+ and its been 40+ turns since this screenshot even and the 999+ has not changed.

I thought it might of been district amount, but thats fine. So, what is going on with this situation? (vanilla, no mods, all dlc)

  • By combining and increasing combat strength, you'll do more damage and take less damage. If you have an enemy of CS 5 and two units of 4CS, you'll lose. Combine the two into an army of CS 6, and you'll will.
  • If you're fighting a single unit, you can, at most (without losing units), have melee 6 units fighting it at once. If you crank up the CS by combining into corps, you can still have 6 attacks, but each attack is stronger and takes less damage.
  • Easier coordination.
I mainly do it with siege weapons. They last longer and take the walls down faster.

I thought so too but the way the attacks work is that if a unit has 50% more attack points it deals double damage so actually any little bit stronger gives you an exponential advantage during a fight.

This is not quite correct.
The damage calculation is simply based on the combat strenght difference not on any proportions. +10 CS (which you get from a corps) means 50% more damage dealt and 33% less damage taken. (+17 which is an army compared to a single unit is +100% damage dealt and -50% taken.)
So a simple example. You have 2 warriors and fight against 1 single warrior (no terrain or other bonusses included, also no luck dependent results). They have the same CS so you deal 30 damage and take 30 in return. This means you deal 60 in total but also take 60 in total. If you merge your warriors to a corps it does just 45 damage but also takes just 20 damage in return. So you still deal 75% of the damage while only taking 33%!
Also a corps takes up just one tile instead of two so you can bring more units to a fight (counting a corps as 2 units) to get an even greater advantage.

This looks like a bug. I think it had something to do with having one of the dramatic ages policy cards (Praetorian Guard iirc) plugged in when the era changed. Sadly there is no other fix than to reload to a save before the era changed.

Re armies etc -

Not to mention strat consumption.

In theory in one unit per tile being able to concentrate power is difficult and valuable. But AI...
