Random Rants 94 I rant at the thread title and shake my fist menacingly.

Looks like Youtube is really cracking down on ad blockers now.

Sorry, uBlock origin, it's been real...
uBlock Origin updates within hours of a new YouTube countermeasure. If yours is still broken, it's probably because you have custom filters set. Remove them and it'll work again.

After I disabled uBlock Origin and anything else that might be considered an ad blocker, I did get adverts playing on YouTube but immediately after the adverts I just get a message from YouTube telling me to disable any adblockers or buy YouTube Premium.

There’s also some custom code you can add to ublock that gets around the banner. I get the banner when I first load a video, but hit refresh and there are no problems after that.

Oh, gods. It's only Thursday.

This worked for me, but it was just enough irritation to get me to switch to invidious.

I've had no problems with uBlock Origin so far - not even seen any messages about adblocker let alone any adverts.

maybe it has to do with the age of one's youtube/google account (?). I started getting "Warning warning danger Will robinson!" about it last week, ignored it until yesterday when the message popped up: disable adblockers or you can't watch youtube. Had no choice but to. Came back today and, as mentioned, I guess I had a custom filter that I then disabled and it seems to work. so far...

I started getting them a couple of days ago.

Maybe it's a browser issue?

I'm not having any problems so far on YT.

Pinterest has become obnoxious, though. If they had a contact address I'd tell them that I have no intention of buying anything that's got its ads in my face.

My own rants:

First: Maintenance doing noisy stuff next door at 8 AM. Hammering going on, loud enough that it sounds like it's in the same room. The manager says it's legal. It's at times like these that I wish I still had my accordion, since the "accordion cure" usually works to make other people stop being noisy.

The idea is that if they can be noisy, so can I. And while I play well enough to recognize the tune, that doesn't mean that I play well.

Second: People not keeping appointments when they're supposed to and not contacting me to let me know there would be a change.

Third: Crap happening on the NaNo site. Hopefully they get it sorted out by October 31, because at 1 minute past midnight on November 1, I start my 50,000-word marathon.

I bought earrings for my wife for the wedding. Emerald. The wife wore them once and gave them back, even though she said she liked the green color. Now, 3 years later, my friend says that it is not customary to gift or give away used earrings, I can throw them in the trash.

A lot of money was invested in them,
The meaning was great for them,
My wife was just called weird by my friend...

I myself must have acted very stupidly, I just don't understand how to fix it. I really won't throw gold with a precious stone in the trash.

No idea why I cried about this, but I did. So, opinions please? Is it normal to do anything with your ex-wife's/passed wife's earrings? Should I keep them for next 50+ years as a memory?

@dusters The trash is no place for earing as nice as those. My wife has earring passed on from both friends and relatives. That your wife did not care for them is not part of the picture now except to you. I'm sure there are many who would love to wear them.

Of course it's customary to give away previously-owned jewelry. That's why people have jewelry that are family heirlooms or carry the sentimental value of having been passed from generation to generation. As long as they've been sanitized, there's no reason why someone else couldn't buy them from you and wear them, or if there's someone you might want to gift them to, go ahead.

Assuming you don't want to keep them, of course. Whatever you decide to do, let it be your decision.

Orwell wrote about the telescreen watching you. Turns out the screens everywhere are just to show you ads.

This message brought to you by Sunny-D.

The screens are also still watching and listening to you.... in order to determine what ads to show you with maximum precision.

And it's not as if they weren't giving access to your private data to allegedly-government organisations anyway.
