Random Rants 94 I rant at the thread title and shake my fist menacingly.

Too many things to watch and I'm not enjoying any of it.
Way back when, if my dad wanted to watch TV but wasn't fussy about what he watched, he'd put on A&E and watch three cycles of back-to-back Law & Order and CSI (original series). That channel got us through weeks of garlic-peeling.

Nowadays if I want to have the TV on and casually learn stuff, I put on BBC Earth. I now know more about the social life/family ties of hyenas than I ever wanted to.

There's plenty of interesting stuff on YouTube. If you (general you) are at all curious about re-creating some of the activities and daily life of a medieval knight, check out the Modern History TV channel.

They're trying to fob you off. Complain loudly and in public.

Both positions I had in person interviews with turned me down. There really isn't much else showing up on the job boards and it is feeling like I have too much experience to slide into an entry level position, but not enough/too specialized to get into a mid level position. With the last one getting turned down, there is nothing else I have applications in for I feel all that confident about.

Hey, as above, I also got 2 rejections after the first round of interview this week. I'm expecting to hear back from some more interesting jobs, so it's not too bad, but still disappointing.
And yesterday I was again at a speed dating event, and today I got 28 rejections.
Gotta go with the flow, it seems.

Comb your hair differently? Don't mix plaids and stripes in your outfit? ;)

Go for the mid level stuff with gusto like you’re a boss.

I got food poisoning last night and I'm not really sure whether the more unpleasant part was projectile vomiting my dinner or cleaning up the mess said projectile vomit made.

The vomit bags from the hospital are quite nice for on-the-go vomiting. Although nothing beats a bucket for when you're trapped near the porcelain throne.

That must have been cathartic /glasses

Jokes aside, yes, vomiting is one of the most unpleasant experiences, at least of the common ones.

I tried to grab something out of my backpack and put my hand in there in just the right way for the tip of a pencil to jam itself under my fingernail.

Ow.

At least it’s not a metal chip that sneaks into your boot after cleaning a machine. Those things are painful when they are at a right angle, especially if they’re pointy.

Why does Acer make such bad chassis for laptops? I've gotten around to removing the hard drive and battery from my old laptop, the entire bottom was one solid panel. I had to unscrew over a dozen screws and pretty much tear away the top panel to get to the insides. And battery release was on the inside of the chassis, who does that? It makes the damn thing pretty much as hard to replace as hard drive.

:nono: They want you to buy a new one.

My landlord told me last night that there's a leak in the bathroom ceiling below me, so there are going to be plumbers in my apartment while I'm out today. Best case scenario, they'll see and be able to fix the problem when they open the ceiling of the bathroom below mine. Worst case, I won't have a working bathroom when I get home tonight*. Anyone want to flip a coin/? :dunno:

* Well, okay, that'd require some kind of complete catastrophe, which is unlikely. The leak downstairs is above their shower. So the plausible worst-case scenario is probably that I won't be able to use my shower tomorrow, but I'd still have use of the toilet and the sink. Still, that'd suck.

YouTube tests restricting ad blocker users to 3 video views

YouTube is currently running what it describes as a "small experiment globally," warning users to toggle off their ad blockers and avoid being limited to only three video views.

As first spotted by a Reddit user on Wednesday, YouTube now displays a pop-up that notifies ad blocker users targeted by this test that "video player will be blocked after 3 videos."

"It looks like you may be using an ad blocker. Video playback will be blocked unless YouTube is allowlisted or the ad blocker is disabled," the message adds.

"Ads allow YouTube to stay free for billions of users worldwide. You can go ad-free with YouTube Premium, and creators can still get paid from your subscription."

After receiving this warning, YouTube users will have only two options: to disable their ad blocker and allow ads or subscribe to YouTube Premium to get rid of all advertisements.

YouTube confirmed the alerts are part of an experiment and said the company urges viewers to allow ads on the platform or try YouTube Premium.

"We're running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium," YouTube told BleepingComputer.

When asked if the company plans to block users from accessing the platform if they're using ad blockers, YouTube said that playback might be temporarily disabled in "extreme cases."

"In extreme cases, where viewers continue their use of ad blockers, playback will be temporarily disabled. We take disabling playback very seriously, and will only disable playback if viewers ignore repeated requests to allow ads on YouTube," the company said.

"To prevent disruption as part of this experiment, viewers using ad blockers may disable their ad blocker, allow YouTube ads or subscribe to YouTube Premium."

YouTube didn't share how many and what regions are involved in this experiment and are seeing these warnings.

This follows another "small experiment" in May, when YouTube tested directly blocking ad blocker users from accessing the platform.

"Ad blocker detection is not new, and other publishers regularly ask viewers to disable ad blockers," a spokesperson told BleepingComputer at the time.

YouTube's Music and Premium services have recently surpassed 80 million subscribers, adding over 30 million within a single year, according to Variety.
