Yes it is super impressive, how the hell did you graduate with zero debt?

Funny enough, some of the southern states are OK at some finanical scholarship things (namely, Georgia is pretty decent with HOPE scholarship: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HOPE_Scholarship, which gives tuition to instate students).

I believe florida does pretty well for their state schools.

But yeah, a lot of debt gets accrued for no real reason.

I lived with my parents and had HOPE (Lived in GA), plus I worked as a math tutor. Now in grad school I have a decent(ish) assistantship, so still no debt.

But this is the rants thread and I'm not just going to rant about how depressed grad school makes me. That's comparatively minor, I really feel like my self confidence has slipped I used to think I was smart, now I know that I am but I don't actually believe it. It's a terrible feeling..

edit: anyways my rant--not much of a rant, but the gym does seem like one the few places where I am not just isolated in rooms with 100% men. It's particularly nice that my building has a little small gym in it, so you could even approach people in there without being in a swarm of 10^6 people.

However, such things would be nicer if I didn't get disgustingly sweaty while exercising
That's what you get for choosing NRE. 100% males.

Nah, you know that the major as a whole is pretty on par with real engineering majors. Actually, the statistics are consistent across all the real engineering degrees at ~85% (EE is like 86%, ME 84%, AE 85%).

just one class is 26 guys to 0 girls (another class is too, but that has 3 people in it)

I meet them all the time... but it IS rare. College and college debt is a clever bourgeoisie way to extract surplus value before you enter the workforce.

I advise people NOT to get into debt for school. Makes you a captive worker.

Best of luck!
That reminds me, and I kid you not, but there's a housing development literally named "Bourgeois Hills" a few miles from my house. I tried to take a picture every time I rode past the sign, but naturally I'm going too fast for a decent image.

GOD <redacted> DAMMIT! JUST WHEN I THOUGHT IMAGESHACK WAS SAFE TO GO BACK TO! :aargh: :aargh: :aargh: :aargh:
Calm down. You should've expected that of them.

So you have a class with three people and is 26-0 anyway?

I am genuinely dreading class tomorrow. They're two new classes, one on the African Diaspora and another on writing about dull buildings in my crappy city. I have to take the latter, and as for the former, I may be able to replace it if it's that bad, but I've never done that before and it could be difficult. I've heard bad things about the prof, he requires too many books, he's having us print out an awful lot before the first class (unlike any other prof I've ever had), and I'm not at all interested in the subject matter.

Moreover, the amount of horrible things I hear about grad school here makes me question whether the history professor path is really the one I should take. Seems like a waste for me to do much else, and I might regret not being a history professor, sure. But grad school sounds awful, and I might kick myself for spending a decade or more (grad + work on Ph.D.) trying to get an average-paying job that's incredibly hard to get instead of doing something more rewarding.

Communism: It's become a CFC topic that's a little like what libertarianism used to be, only with more than one devotee.

This rant is not really related to RT's rant above.

Yeah, it's why I don't shoot off "communism" IRL... we demonstrate principles through practice and people accept us or reject us based on results:
-- we meet day-to-day necessities (emergency and supplemental food, get people to doctors and dentists, recruit lawyers to give legal advice)
-- we garner support from all sectors of society
-- we take on local manifestations of economic oppression (rising utility rates, hospital closures.
-- we acquire property to invest in the areas we organizr.

At some point, some people agree what we do without any paid staff or government funding is how the world could be run...

Bam! Sooooooooocialism! Cooooooooomunism! Ba-da-bing!

Calm down. You should've expected that of them.
I'm sorry. Im just in a huge depressive funk right now, and I'm grumpy enough to intentionally bring everyone down with me. :(

I'll try to keep my ranting in check from now on. :/

You should maybe consult your university's psychological counselor if that's really so bad.
At least better than making a big decision without proper investigation.

Naaah, it's not that bad.
There are often problems, and you don't always like your work, but it's like that in every job.
But you exchange that for freedom (sort of) and interesting work. That's not something many people get.

But it's also not something for everyone.

I am sick and tired of Steam needing to download a new client several times a day. It's driving me crazy, and I'm convinced the only thing that changes is the ad for whatever stupid game they're currently pushing. I'm only interested in updates that improve security, basically. I wish I could opt out of other updates.

Given the state of the world, it might be possible that most of those are for security. And if they're not, they should be.

You're lying and you know it!! Steam claims that they have had only one update this month and only three since the end of October! Stop maligning them! :mischief:

I am, of course, joking. It's a frustration for me as well. I went looking back in December to see what all the updates were about and lo and behold couldn't find any update information.

Do you have it set so it synchs your saves on the cloud? Not really sure why you would want it to do that that, but I guess some people find utility in hopping from system to system and having their files accessible.

Yeah, it's a pain to see that update thingy on Steam.

People, just use GOG instead. ;)

Don't fuss so much. Try to think of things in a different light.
