Just saw a HUGE display of the northern lights totally unexpected right outside my house. Full on giant green drapes dancing across the sky. This in early evening in a densely inhabited and lit area just south of Oslo. In all my 26 years in this area the full extent of it I've seen previously has been vague colorations and very slight flashes on nights where the possibility has been reported so I was ready. Didn't think what I've seen now was even possible this far south!

Has there been a Solar CME or something recently?

Edit: Looks like sightings may be possible as far as northern germany and the entirety of UK tonight, look to the skies people!

Aand a couple of hours later I saw another even more amazing aurora. Even with slight pinks and reds this time.

Looks like it may be starting for a third time now with activity levels forecasted at their highest for the next hour or so, if you are anywhere near the general area of northern europe I suggest you take a look out of the window every once in a while if the sky is clear.

I should have taken your post into account in NA as I could have driven a bit to have seen them way down "south" into northern USA (eg as in here)

I've never seen them and it could have been a good opportunity to catch them at least once. I've been meaning to be on alert for them since there is pretty good tracking of when they actually are visible

I'm such an idiot. I thought I had been sent a duplicate mail from the Aussie Immigration department when I applied for my visa. Instead, the second one was the visa grant.

So I've had an Australian visa in effect for eleven days in which I anxiously waited to get one.

Just got back from a 3 days trip from Berlin with one of the student assocations .
The old and the new museum are really great, and the spy museum is sorta okay, in case you don't know about that stuff. Also did the other mandatory things like the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and Holocaust monument.
Had a nice weekend .
