Rat 33 - AWE 3BC - pangaea

Lurker's question... this is NOT criticism: You guys seem to have a lot of spears. Do you guys usually train this many/need them for this type of game? Or do you plan to train morsly horses and swords, and consequently think early archers a waste?

Very early on Spears give best odds. Behind walls and fortified you have defense 3.5 vs an archers attack of 2 or even a legions attack of 3. You often cannot attack outward because killing the Archer will leave your Archer exposed and everything is about minimizing losses. You have to wait for the enemy to attack you instead.

Once swords are around the Spears become MP which are needed for your monarch govt anyway.

So ya, it is the variant. Early archers aren't a waste, but you want two spear for each town early on - especially if the towns are farther apart than normal (like this variant).

Okay, this time I got the correct save. Highlights.. Rome is ours! If we play chase the capital correctly, they should be good for 4-5 towns. Unfortunately, they are not very close like the last game. Here is my turn-log:
Spoiler :

Pre-Flight: CivAssist 2, Word running. Open the save, look things over.
Not much to see, but what there is looks fine. Kill the Archer outside of Copenhagen with a Sword clean, promotes.

Turn 1, 1225 BC: Archer moves north, finding a mountain with Iron. 2 Iron sources close makes it seem like this map has plenty.

IBT: Roman Archer steps out of the fog north of Copenhagen.
Trondheim Sword=>Worker.

Turn 2, 1200 BC: Kill the Roman Archer.
Send 3 more Swords out to capture Rome.
Raise lux slider to prevent riots in Trondheim.

IBT: Trondheim Worker=>Sword.

Turn 3, 1175 BC: Lower lux slider.

IBT:

Turn 4, 1150 BC: Stack continues north, exploring Archer finds an isolated Roman city. Note: I am playing this as I would have without the knowledge of my turn-set I did from the wrong save.

IBT:

Turn 5, 1125 BC: Stack finds another Roman border.

IBT: Trondheim Sword=>Sword.
Copenhagen Sword=>Sword.

Turn 6, 1100 BC: Stack finds a long enough border to be Rome and a satellite city.

IBT:

Turn 7, 1075 BC: Cross the border, hope I can get to Rome soon, we need another city or some casualties; our unit support is killing us.

IBT: Roman Archer avoids our stack.
Bergen Sword=>Sword.

Turn 8, 1050 BC: Stack moves between Rome and Veii.

IBT: Another Roman Archer avoids our stack, moving south.
Trondheim Sword=>Sword.

Turn 9, 1025 BC: Our stack moves next to Rome.

IBT: Another Roman Archer avoids our stack, moving south. That’s 3 heading our way.

Turn 10, 1000 BC: Lose 1 Sword at Rome, but the city is ours, along with 2 slaves.
Rome has at least 4 cities left, maybe 5.
Send out another wave of 5 Swords, a road north will be necessary.
Raise lux slider to 30%, change Trondheim to a worker.

The save:

The last game had closer neighbors because it was 80% water. This one is 70% water, so we naturally have a larger buffer zone. I guess having one not-so-close AI is better than three AI pounding on our door?

Got it.

great :goodjob:

I agree to play grab the capital as it will not autoraze after cultural expansions. Hopefully the Romans will be stupid enough to seetle a little closer to us as well. As it looks, we have successfully prevented their UU.

We need to watch out for the annoying Hittite UU though.

oh, since it is 24th here already, I wish everyone a merry christmas!

The Romans are definitely stupid enough, but I doubt they'll be building any more settlers.

Rat33_BC750.jpg

That's pretty much it.
I built swordsmen, killed archers, and captured Veii. Five elite victories, no great leader.
I also trapped and killed the Hittite scout, the only unit of theirs that I have seen.
I doubt anyone cares, but Japan completed The Oracle.

We have more than enough swordsmen to handle Rome. Shall we march a stack north and find someone else to play with?

If the Hittites are north, their 3MCs may need jungle roads to get to us. It may be time for some more judicious exploration to find them.

Is it only me or why can't I see the current Roman capital? I would like us to take them down and establish a proper road net first. I fear the AI will come and meet us sooner than we want with all their settle pairs.

As this is the xmas season, I know we got to be a bit relaxed here until new year. If you are not around, just let the rest know

Pre-turn:

Look around. City MM looks good.
I'm going to prune Trondheim down to size 5 (10spt) via some Worker builds; we really need more Workers for land improvements and city joins.
Move one stray worker who hadn't done anything yet.

Spoiler :

Roman Archer kills our Sword at Neapolis.

eSword dies vs. spear.
Sword kills spear.
Sword kills spear.
Sword dies vs. spear.
Sword kills archer, promotes
Archer dies vs. redlined spear and promotes it :wallbash:

IT:

Trondheim: Workers

Turn 10 (550 BC):

eSword kills 4/5 eSpear.
Sword kills spear, we own Neapolis. Start on Walls.

Not much happened - I was waiting on Roman cities to not autoraze. We now own Neapolis, and we should be able to take Antium in the next turnset.

SoZ would be some bonus troops, and since we aren't in a bad place right now, I'd say go for it. The Ivory is our first luxury, isnt it? Anyway, I have a feeling that we are behind a chokepoint or even on an island, because no wandering settlers or scouts have shown from other civs. Something odd is going on.

There are spices near Antium. We will probably have those before the ivory near Cumae.

The map is a confirmed pangaea, so we are certainly not on an island. I doubt there is a chokepoint, either. There's just more land than we expected, and the AI are slow to cross large jungles.

we can aim for SOZ and should start a prebuild now. If we fail to get it, we can always divert to HE (by then I hope we have an army)

This can't be a faked pangaea as it was checked for us.

:bump: Greebley, do you know you are up?

Preturn: Looks good
One generic piece of advise though - don't forget to build Catapults. We have none. While we hopefully won't need them for Rome(unless they get Iron), we could meet another civ or the Hittites could show up. We need to be building at least some so they are there when we are ready. I mention this because we were way short last game too. We don't need a lot with high unit expences

Went for writing and lit with a Palace prebuild. GLib really helps.

470 BC: Spot Blue border. I plan on not meeting them if I can help it.
450 BC: Our main two cities go on wealth because I want to keep science up. Cumae is refusing to grow and units are still moving on Antium.

390 BC: Take Antium. It is next to an Orange border (England)

Pyramids(Persia) and Great Wall(Arabs) are built.

350 BC: Cumae never grew. Or else they did and immediately rushed something. It may be that sitting next to a city simply won't ever grow.
No elephants.

Notes:
Cumae is now the capitol, but there is one other Roman city somewhere. A Roman Warrior did show up from the direction of the Sword in the Jungle (see pic)
We will be meeting new civs soon I am guessing.

Pre-Turn
MM a little

1. 330BC
well, that stack next to Cumae will have to wait a while, roan around a bit and find Romans red borders

2. 310BC
maybe I was wrong after all, Cumae got an archer out and grew to 2
lose a sword but take out 2 spears and the archer and the city is ours
ivory is not connected yet

3. 290BC
climb mountain next to Pompeii

IT we get writing

4. 270BC
by the way Hittites are really small with a mere 3 cities

IT we lose a musket to Rome

5. 250BC
zzz

IT oh, English sail into our land, they are big with 12 cities and will be a threat soon
declare war of course

6. 230BC
bomb the English galley, we need to shift units there sooner or later

7. 210BC
ivory is connected now, we could build SoZ (still 14 turns) or GLIb, up to us

defeat archer at Pompeii, lux can go down to 10%

8. 190BC
bad news, Korea shows up and we have another big enemy with 12 cities

some more units at Pompeii

9. 170BC
Copenhagen grew to 7 but a temple will finish next turn for more happiness and some border expansion

10. 150BC
funny enough, so far we haven't seen a single English or Korean unit
I am especially puzzled about England, they must be in another war

lit is due in 4 turn and we can decide whether we want the GLib or SoZ. I am actually leaning towards the SoZ
Pompeii should expand soon for us to take
currently the workers are getting water towards Cumae

By the way, knowing the map I am really enjoying watching this--though I did play through it for a short while, and this is turning out quite differently than my mini-game!

Looks like things will be heating up soon!
