Red Diamond Threads

The ninety day test period is coming to a close. More comments are welcome.

I'm liking RD status, I can't really offer more then that. The few times I have gotten infracted in an RD thread was when I forgot it was RD.

My lack of activity, especially in the more heated debates such as those in RD threads, denies the provision of a useful comment.

I like them. It's great to be able to have a discussion without being interrupted by cheap crap, and without resorting to banning cheap crap altogether, 'cause it's still fun sometimes.

I would still like to see more red mod text and cards in RD threads, and less red mod text and cards in other threads. It's seemed like a lot of green and blue mod text in RD threads, which is good, but sometimes red is better.

I see that they have fallen out of use of late. Not one thread on the first page has a RD symbol on it, so take it how you will.

Do you think this is because thread starters make a conscious decision to not use a Red Diamond, because thread starters simply forget about the Red Diamond possibility, or because of some other reason?

Since Red Diamond threads are still common enough that people generally probably haven't forgotten about them, I think it's more the first reason.

There is one right now, but it comes with a poll so you can't see the diamond from afar.

I really should have read this sooner, I was feeling all brilliant for figuring it out by myself...

I think RD threads are good and even started one today, where I think considered discussion is sought.

While RD threads are not a panacea, they seem to have a place and do provide an opportunity for less chaotic discussion. What is apparent though is that the clamor for serious discussion did not represent the full truth of the matter. I hope to have a more in depth review of the matter soon.

Yeah, you can't predict what we want - even when you ask us, we don't know what we want. It's better to just give us a whole bunch of tools and let us figure it out for ourselves, like monkeys.

The Red Diamond did not solve the biggest clamor in my opinion. I can handle people being rude, I can't handle people who use every argument trick in the book to avoid using reason for their arguments but still come out 'looking good', or so they may think in their limited capacity for self-reflection. Since the rules of RD thread do not include those, understandably, the main problem is still there: People avoiding real discussion like the plague. Much easier to strawman your opponents position. Much easier using the question mark as a shield for accountability. Much easier being intellectually dishonest. Much easier being wilfully ignorant. Much easier repeating the same old debunked statements week in, week out. It's not that hard to be a disruptive presence while keeping to the rules of RD threads.

But of course, that's just easy criticism from my comfy passive chair. I have nothing to offer in the solution department.

One thing that could be really helpful is liberal use of the 'report' button. People shouldn't be able to be disruptive in RD threads (whilst cutting out rudeness was a major aim, allowing for 'reasonable' arguments was another), so if they are, it may be because either we haven't seen an exchange at all, or haven't viewed it as disruptive. If other people are viewing certain behaviour that is being allowed in RD threads as disruptive, then it'd help a lot to be made aware of this. As helpful as generalised feedback can be, nothing really beats being able to point to a specific problem via a report.

This is a basic problem of engaging people over the internet in anonymous discussion forums. It presents itself to varying degrees everywhere you go--and in many places much, much worse than here, I think.

If you can figure out the solution to this problem, Ziggy, I will nominate you for President of the Universe. Or buy you a beer, either one.

That's the complaints which have been made since the very beginning of the thread, and ignored so far... :-/

Very much so. I never expected RD threads to solve this problem. The more positive spin I'd give on the problem occurring and being noted here is that it meets with more resistance, and thus more clamor than elsewhere, because we are more Uber than elsewhere. I've been to elsewhere. I know.

Unplug the internet, and I'll take the beer please.

What is Native American for Sits in Comfy Chair Offering Solutions by the way? Surely better than the name I have been given: Sitsinfrontogftellyfarting

Well, it is a doozy. There's many smart people here who have become very adept at using ambiguity in their statements which hint very strongly towards something, but has the advantage of maybe not so plausible deniability when called out on. Present company excluded of course. ;)

Basically, that's the definition of trolling. Which is (rightly so) infracted. So I don't see the problem :p
