[RD] Russia Invades Ukraine: The 7th Thread Itch; scratch it here!

Well now according to the BBC:

Western military powers are running out of ammunition to give Ukraine to

defend itself against Russia's full-scale invasion, the UK and Nato have warned.

I cannot speak for other western countries, but it has become increasingly clear to me that here
in the UK the current 24 hour news, instant messaging/texting culture means that many of our
politicians seem to live in a perpetual present and are unable to plan beyond the immediate future.
Now that particular topic is wider than the scope of this thread, but there is an impact on this war.

'Z' is not good anymore for Russian propagandists. Probably because it represents failure. Now they want to return to the old 'holy Russia' so Russian soldiers should not die for 'Z' anymore but for 'holy Russia' which kind of makes more sense among all the Russian nonsense.

The big question is will Elon change from 'X' to 'Holy Twitter'?

Theres not much too rehash with Western munition stockpiles running low
Gotta ramp up production of all Weapon systems and Supplies

LONDON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Former Russian TV journalist Marina Ovsyannikova, who captured world attention when she burst into a news broadcast with a placard that read "Stop the war" and "They're lying to you", was sentenced in absentia on Wednesday to eight and half years in jail.

Ovsyannikova was fined for her original protest, less than three weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, in what it called a "special military operation".

British Intelligence confirms what I've heard about for the past few days, Russians shot down their own Su-35S near Tokmak.
Not the first and it won't be the last. I eagerly await the arrival of the F16s to wipe the remainder of moscovian air force committed to the attempted genocide of Ukraine. Those Su bombers won't be able to bombard civilians unpunished for much longer.

There's a story being reported here, that the Ukrainians claim to have destroyed another S-400 air defence system in the Belgorod Oblast last night.

We'll probably hear more about it in English language media soon.

Spoiler polish language discussion :
the digraph rz in polish makes the same sound as the g does in 'mirage'. or just think french 'je'. it's also represented as ż (e.g. feliks dzierżyński, the reason being it would be otherwise written as dzierrzyński which is confusing)
likewise sz is a sh sound.
and w is a v sound like in german
hence zheshov.

polish is phonetic if you know what you know how to read it. sure the orthography of polish is weird to english speakers because it is, after all, a slavic language that abandoned cyrillic scripts in favor of a latin one. but grzegorz brzęczyszczykiewicz is no less phonetic than llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Seems there are ideas around to increase production in Ukraine itself, as western support is dropping. No idea how they will keep those facilities safe, but Rheinmetall & co have made enough money over this war (and will continue doing so), to make one or two risky investments.

Ukrainian troops used jet skis to attempt landing in Crimea.

According to Russian sources, the landing was intercepted by aircraft, 15 troopers were killed, one was captured.
Ukrainian sources acknowledged some "losses", without specifying details.

I feel silly coming into this discussion all at once and having not read everything but I was just reading about fighting around Bakhmut. Which would be what, the third year of fighting around Bakhmut. Or 9 years, which is it? Can we just agree that this fight is a push and move on to another place where my glorious Washington can manage not to be on the winning side?

Moderator Action: Hello CI, this is a Ukraine war news thread where folks posts the latest war news and talk about it. We try to keep the discussion focused on current events and not the pre war events that led up to the war. The best way to participate since you are new to the thread is to either find current war news and post it or respond to the news that others have posted. We are strict about staying on topic. We have Russians, Ukrainians, and Europeans who are posting and for them the topic can get emotional and personal, so be thoughtful and respectful of what others think. Thanks.

From the Opening Post of thread #7:

And we begin again.

As we go forward we all recognize that both sides are in a propaganda war and accept that is ongoing. There is no need to get into arguments over which sources are propaganda or not. Each side may provide links to news and each thread participant can decide for themselves what is valuable to them. Proving or disproving what is propaganda is an endless circle game to be avoided.

We need to lower the levels of animosity towards all posters. None of us are leading or participating directly in the combat. Enough harm is being done on the battlefields and in the cities and we do not need to bring additional animosity here. Remember, our focus is on current news related to the war. It is not on pre invasion events, whataboutism, or anyone's personal desire to widen the conversation to include pet peeves and personal interests. We will thread ban those who cannot abide with civility or posting guidelines. these threads move fast enough that posts can be be quickly buried so don't feel the need to respond to every slight or disagreeable thought that is posted. Those to shall pass.

What we want is for this thread to be a source of information for those of any persuasion and meaningful discussion. You are all a great source of both knowledge and information from all over the world. Contribute without rancor or anger.

Slovakia halts military aid to Ukraine after parliamentary elections

Zuzana Čaputová, President of the Slovak Republic, has opposed the provision of a new package of military assistance to Ukraine due to the result of the parliamentary elections won by the anti-Ukrainian party Smer-SD led by Prime Minister Robert Fico.

The Slovak President believes that ignoring this position of Smer-SD and "some other" parties "would set an unfortunate precedent for the future." Robert Fico's anti-Ukrainian party won the elections in Slovakia, based on preliminary results after almost all the votes have been counted. On Monday, he received two weeks to form a government. Fico previously declared his intention to stop military and political support for Ukraine

Ukraine war: US gives 1.1 million rounds of ammunition seized from Iran to Kyiv

The US has sent roughly 1.1 million bullets seized from Iran last year to Ukraine, its military has said.
The US Central Command (Centcom), which oversees operations in the Middle East, says the rounds were confiscated from a ship bound for Yemen in December.
Ukraine's Western allies recently warned that their production lines were struggling to keep up with the rate at which Ukraine was using ammunition.
Centcom says the Iranian rounds were transferred to Ukraine on Monday.
It added the ammunition was 7.62mm calibre used in Soviet-era rifles and light machine-guns.
The munitions were originally seized by US naval forces from a stateless ship named MARWAN 1 on 9 December, it said.

The US government gained ownership of them in July through a process known as civil forfeiture, by which an asset can be seized if its owner is thought to be involved in criminal activity.
In this case, the claim was brought against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of the Iranian armed forces tasked with preserving the country's government.
In a statement, Centcom said the US was "committed to working with our allies and partners to counter the flow of Iranian lethal aid in the region by all lawful means".
Iran backs the Houthi rebels in Yemen's ongoing civil war, but arms transfers to the group are barred under a 2015 resolution by the UN Security Council.
The civil war in Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthis took control of the capital Sanaa and removed the country's government.
The ousted government remains the internationally recognised authority in Yemen and is backed by a Saudi-led coalition of countries in the region as well as the US and the UK.

Since the second half of last year, Iran has also repeatedly been accused of supplying Russia with arms, most notably drones, for use in the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine Aid: Congress’ Failure of U.S. Foreign Policy Leadership

By Lt. Gen. (Ret.) James M. Dubik

October 4, 2023 8:00 AM ET

That there has been no major war in Europe since 1945 isn’t an accident. It is because that generation of American leaders — political, diplomatic, economic and military — came together to defeat Adolf Hitler’s expansionist, war-crime-filled aggression. This same set of leaders then designed a set of structures that (a) provided near-term stability in a very turbulent and quite violent post-fighting Europe that (b) laid a foundation for a long-term peace — NATO and the European Union — from which almost four generations have benefitted. That is, until Russia invaded Ukraine.

American and European leaders worked together to fashion post-war European security, economic, and political institutions that were mutually beneficial to all — including America. Many of these leaders had very visceral reasons to succeed at this monumentally difficult task: They had lived through or fought in two world wars. America falsely believed that “what happened in Europe doesn’t affect us,” only to be drawn into World War I and suffer almost 260,000 U.S. killed and wounded. And again, when an aggressive dictator went unanswered for too long: World War II, in which millions of civilians and hundreds of thousands of those fighting were killed or wounded in Europe alone — including approximately 552,000 Americans.

The scale of death, destruction, famine and the massive displacements of European civilians, many parentless children, all led senior leaders of the period to the same conclusion — never again. “The enormity of the task before all of them,” said Dean Acheson in the opening of his memoir Present at the Creation, “began to appear as just a bit less formidable than that described in the first chapter of Genesis.”

The men and women who fought, and then built the Europe most of us inherited, would be appalled by the growing attitude today among too many American leaders and citizens of not supporting Ukraine.
