Utilizing waste heat like that is incredibly difficult, if not impossible. The difference between ambient temperature and heated air expelled by AC is too low to be utilized by mechanical means. Use of piezoelectric and thermoelectric materials is still in infancy and usually tends to end up with negative energy balance when you factor in production and recycling costs against the useful energy generated over their lifetime.

And remember that no energy transfer or transformation is 100% effective. You always end up wasting some in form of heat.

But we should find a way to sell excess heat to third world countries. A useful tech would allow for the creation of different closed systems within the earth :yup:

Could one make a solar-powered air-conditioner that also converted the heat produced in air conditioning to some other form of energy, scale up, just run the things, and reverse global warming?

Or rather, why can't you? (cuz I can't be the first person to think of this)

Given any existing technology, no. Probably not even possible in theory.

If you want to cool the Earth with technology, put umbrellas in space.

I read that TV shows misusing the Emergency Alert System tone can actually activate the real EAS. How does that work?

In practice that's what happens by exporting global warming to them after buying fossil fuels off them at highway robbery prices.

I want to know who here has the biggest TV screen. I really want one of those bigass TVs now that the prices have come down so much. Anyone here have anything bigger than 75"?

Don't have a TV myself, but if you're going to shell out for a mega screen, shell out for a home theatre system too while you're at it. The setup is a major pain in the ass but you won't regret it. (Since Futureshop is apparently dead, not sure where you'd get one. Best Buy...?) The store will have an installation service but it's rather expensive, and so long as you know how to cut wire and follow instructions, you can do it yourself in a few hours.

People tend to get sticker shock though and then they just get a $200 sound bar. Which is better, I guess, but definitely not maximizing the pleasure of a big screen.

23" CRT, and I took back the cable box a month or so back

So how do you arrange your furniture?
I don't have nearly enough room to own furniture. The bookcase that was here when I moved in covers more than half my window, and my "computer desk" is a hospital tray. The largest chair that can fit is the smallest task chair you can get, one of those dinky ones that can only support 150 lbs, and without arms. All other real estate is taken by my bed. Downgrading from a queen to a twin has allowed me to not need to twist in order to leave my room.

what if there's a fire right outside your door?

Oh, you missed my awesome Friends reference, but still

It sounds as if you were renting a room in a tenement house instead of living in one of the richest cities in the hemisphere.

I'm pretty sure that Syn's landlord isn't entirely legal.

Yeah, like, 99% sure.
