The Very-Many-Questions-Not-Worth-Their-Own-Thread Thread XLIII

Gulf of America only appears on Apple and Google maps if you are in the US. Map names are typically driven by the location of your device settings.

That's what I mean, in neutral places (like Canada) it shows up as Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America), whereas in the U.S. or Mexico it defaults to the name used in each country and excludes the brackets.

My question is.. What happens if 3 countries have their own name for a geographical location and you're viewing it from another i.e. neutral location? If Cuba calls this bay the Gulf of Cuba, and you're looking at the map from Canada, do they show 2 things in brackets? I can't think of a good existing example of this sort of thing so I can check it. You'd think it exists somewhere.

If you change the location setting on your phone to another country, it should then open the maps to show how it is reflected in that location.

The South China Sea is, so far, only labelled as that, even in the parts where the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia have renamed their own claimed parts of it.

This isn't true, they've started putting it in brackets here too, like they do with "Arabian Gulf" for the Persian Gulf.

It sets an incredibly low bar for a genuine naming dispute to be just acquiescing to this sort of thing in a global facing application just because one guy made something up.

The link is an opinion piece that focuses mostly on Apple an Google. I expect the subject is still a dynamic one.

I would like to see the evidence he has for that. I think you can change it by changing your IP address.

[EDIT] Ah, I was talking about google.

Isn't Zoom still alive? At least technically.
It's what I always used in my job for video discussion.
Zoom cuts you off after 40 mins if you do not give them money.

What is the best alternative to skype?

The primary features I am interested in:

- Free online only family video chats
- Calling landlines from my computer as a last resort

This prompted the question:

Microsoft is shutting down Skype after over two decades
WhatsApp calling or zoom or Facetime

Just wait 10 minutes and restart.

Does discord have video calling? I know they have voice calling.

It would be better to not have 10 minute breaks in conversation.

From a google these look like options, I would love to hear from anyone that has used something like these:

https://jami.net/

Jami is a free/libre, end-to-end encrypted and private communication platform that requires no central authority.

Jami’s features include: text chats, voice and video calls, screen sharing, file sharing, conference calls, and group chats. Jami can also function as a regular SIP client.

Jami works on GNU/Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Multiple devices can be linked to a Jami account, and no personal information is required to create an account.

Openmeetings provides video conferencing, instant messaging, white board, collaborative document editing and other groupware tools. It uses API functions of Media Server for Remoting and Streaming Kurento.

Whatsapp is encrypted end to end, but that does not mean Zucker does not have some of your information.

Yeah, the metadata is valuable. Especially after what happened with Khashoggi I really do not like the idea of that. It also do not run on linux natively I think.

For the first feature, the 2 following tools can be used, although I've not tried them myself, and I don't know if they require custom hosting:

Do we need a dedicated AI video/music thread?
Or should we avoid that?

Is there an archive of deleted posts? Closest thing to a garbage bin on the website, so that seems the most appropriate place to put AI slop.

That's why i asked if we should avoid it.
