Trouble in the Gulf: Ties to Qatar cut

Also the growing income differences in some of the classic democracies will imo undermine the quality of the democracy and increase autocratic behaviour of leaders.

The more a state's wealth is derived from a single and easily controllable resource, the greater the odds of authoritarian or dictatorial government.

Oil and gas, or soybeans, or diamonds… hmmm, yes.

You are leaving a very important thing unsaid here. All those states with wealth derived mostly from a single resource get the other resources from trading it.Which means that the power of those authoritarian or dictatorial governments ends up being backed by the other countries doing business with this one. Without that kind of foreign backing no authoritarian or dictatorial government would be able to last long.

I don't dictatorships & authoritarian governments necessarily require an official (or unofficial for that matter) "backer", but they at least require people willing to do business with them. As long as there's a buyer for your oil, diamonds, tropical fruit, or whatever that's also willing to ignore whatever crimes or craziness your state does, your regime can survive. When dictatorships thrive, its because of major backing as you say.

Well, every little dictatorship can carve itself a nice niche.

True enough, there are dictatorships in poor countries. Dictatorships may even star on some ideological or religious grounds but they soon (a generation or two) turn into a patronage system.

Those countries cursed with some valuable resource that are under dictatorships will have their population ready to fight for a slice of the wealth, starting with those close to the government and the military that supports it (power coming from the barrel of a gun and all their). The dictatorship breads down unless it can provide goods to its backers. And those goods must be obtained through trade, they can't get people to kill and die for the king/dictator in exchange for a barrel of oil to sit on.

Slightly off topic, but as anyone studied Iran-Arab relations enough to know why the Arab nations are so uniformly hostile toward Iran? I realize there's ancient racial tension between Arabs and Persians, not to mention religious differences, but did the Revolution and the establishment of a Shiite government have something to do with it?

a common ground between the Gulf and the Reaganites . Gave ample diversion as Ariel Sharon's Israel attempted to carve Lebanon . Then became a fixture of sorts .

it's a good thing that am a grounded fool , with his feet on the ground . If ı was not , imagine what ı might have said about yesterday's edition of the pinnacle of yellow journalism in Turkey . This time a sister of the ruler of Qatar and yeah , you can see her hair ! And some part of the throat , the place under "Adam's apple" ! Where's the acid , man ? Aren't they "Muslims" in Qatar ? For the sister is the current caretaker of museums in Qatar , you know , replacing the 2nd wife mentioned above and we also have a picture of a female artist . No doubt covered in whole , but can't exactly tell if she has the veil . Now that all we can see is the back of her head , 'cause let me see , the brother and husband of the artist will beat the hell out of the artist if she gets pictured . You know , if her face ever appears in "public" ... Say , in a Turkish newspaper . If you ever go into some Arabian country , never tell a guy that his mother has been seen on the Turkish TV , apparently you can get throughly beaten or something ... The artist has an house in the Turkish city of Bursa , which she likes and where she can have the statues she makes covered in material and stuff . (Bronze , for durability) The 5th largest city of Turkey , Bursa was the only one in that top 5 to vote YES in the referandum , though ı can't say it's "conservative" in the way it "should have been" . Is in the news for the most recent inititiative of its Mayor , "advising" the last section of the light rail is assigned to females ... Some yellow placard placed on the ground where the 3rd or 4th railcar stops . With such "advising" hopefully in a couple of years no males will stand there and the whole railcar will be available for females . Well , the rush hours can be crowded and being female is tough even without being grabbed and the lot . Though the expectation is that in a couple of years any female that gets into 1st or 2nd railcar will be looked down as a wh_re and in another couple years the 3rd or 4th railcar will no longer be there .

as long as there are one or two females to grace the front pages of newspapers .

backlash ? What backlash ? The Mayor was in the sights of this famous triggerman . A journalist who talks in the name of Party , if he says someone should be investigated , the totally independent courts start the investigation on the next day ... Well , the Mayor has been spotted renting halls to CHP on the anniversaries of 17-25 December , heinous attacks of Congregation against the Party ; you know , attempting to arrest the PM's son on corruption charges . Islam saves is a phrase that's supposed to mean that you will protect your soul with following the orders of the correct Religion , now that am Muslim myself , not applying Vahhabi precepts to take the country back , thus winning the sympathy of the "Muslims" . Just like Arda Turan returning after visiting the Kabe . The guy did nothing to his opponent in this European airport or the hotels , places where foreign police would have jurisdiction and you know , arrrest him . It was onboard the plane where the seats form a channel that can easily be blocked by his many friends , so that he can attack some 60 year old guy and no one can scratch his charisma by holding his hand . Yeah , immediately to Mekke , while the Party media can insist it's a conspiracy because Arda Turan campaigned for YES in the referandum and the guy still talks of his manliness . It's becoming evermore bothersome to see "Muslims" are called to support another "Muslim" acts in a way even ı (the almost never practising Muslim) can say to be unislamic . Take this Pop singer , nice voice , good sales and the guy , naturally , turns out to be a "Muslim" ... Ezan , the call to prayers , a thing any tourist to Turkey inevitably notices and the Pop singer on TV , doing it in Cairo style . Muslim Brothers , man . Gotta teach it to the country , man . Well , turns out he has some sort of a sheik and the sheik doesn't like the guy's wife and guess what ... Immediate divorce and re-marriage . Within the week . Do not expect any TV-imam , for there are many in Turkey today , to declare this can not happen , for the tradition expects a 40 days of waiting so that if the former wife turns out to be pregnant , the infant will become the responsibility of the Pop singer . Or something ...

"muslims" must care for each other , after all . There are enemies of "Muslims" and while when the time comes the "Muslims" walk on water and defeat any attack , any disgrace by the "Muslims" should be covered . Hence we learn Islam is best lived in Qatar . The guy who says that is an expert on Africa , regularly telling how well Islam is lived in Somalia ...

distraction on the Voice of Russia . After the disasterous earthquake of 1999 , some 470 squares and open areas all over Turkey have been set aside as "collection locations" where the people are supposed to concentrate , field hospitals and tent "cities" so that people will not buried under rubble with aftershocks . Yeah , in 18 years 300+ of them have been converted into malls and residences . Some guy asks an official about the locations under his responsibility , the official says "state secret" ... You know the Zionists can engineer a snowstorm or an hole in the ground , to stab "Muslims" in the back after the quake happens and people go to the collection location . Which they do not know anyhow .

back to Somalia . Reading a relevant thread elsewhere , ı learn there is an UAE Somaliland , declaring itself independent for the last decade . Apparently meant for palm oil plantations , with EU having a large demand , so profitable . Or maybe not , Kenya was also mentioned . Qatar and New Turkey have the normal Somalia ; either poor soil or El Kaide's local franchise too effective ; no doubt funded by UAE ... Hence olive trees to be uprooted in Turkey ... Amazing then to see the Party that passes any law it desires , failing to pass that . Banana Republics are the past ; one must assume EU is happy with the supply situation and telling Qatar directly . Yeah , one would someday hope to see EU supporting Turkish democracy with the same vigour ...

as a Starfleet Admiral am not much of a strategist . While ı could see nobody in New Turkey would ever rant on the thousand that died building the sport complexes of World Cup 2020 ... Them being Brown people , Nepalese or something . Hindsight is perfect , though ; now ı can fathom the true blue Victorian morals that has long permeated the New Turkey . The smugness , the self confidence , the "We have Maxim guns and they have none" attitude . It looked extremely alien ; Erbakan's lot also talking in outrageous terms but you could see they didn't believe the world belonged to them and that only to them . Must have arrived with the Qataris . Who would have personal contact with the finest of Britain , right ? Rumours begin that the Army of Petrol is being sent there on the basis of an understanding that "international laws" will not apply and only Govermental agreements . So , when some Qatari Colonel slaps a goverment general , the goverment general will know he is better if he shuts up ... This is the return of the Umeyyads , my friend , and everything to be reversed ; slave soldiers before expulsion to Central Asia , and anyone halfway smart long dead , for obviously Victorian mindset never comes without some long term planning for genocide . Glorious news that Doha has bought 20 000 Pakistanis and they are to based in the "Turkish" base . Even if that turns out be an untruth , that leads to claims on the Pakistani nukes . Despite the rumours that the Saudis have already bought a couple .

and even more pieces of puzzle fall into place . Say , the glorious push of New Turkey to be arms merchants , developing a million projects at the same time . The company account of Qatari Aerospace Mürted , Ankara says it all . "One must not forgot all these combat aircraft projects are [micro-managed] ultimately by President Erdogan. All the red tape and funding issues are non-issues when there is a single man driving force behind the project. A man who no one wants to upset in Turkey. A man that does not accept the word no. Turkey would have no defence industry had Mr. Erdogan not have injected a good proportion of GDP into R&D, strategic co-productions deals with ToT etc. Whether its the right project model or not is debatable. But the projects are now political- the survival of the Turkish Government depends on it." Is the silliest statement you will ever see . Now that the guy who wrote that would simply go to jail ; New Turkey depends on no one , my friend ... But , let me see ... Barack spineless jerk Hussein , in a bid to convince the Iranians to become partners in the destruction of Turks was lukewarm to weapon sales to the Arabs . Weapon purchases as a diplomatic method is a most effective diplomatic leverage for the Arabs . They buy tons of guns and America goes and crushes some opponent of Riyadh . When the Saudis were fed up with spineless jerk's strict refusal to destroy Iran and began using their massive stocks of weaponry , and that's the disgrace in Yemen , they quickly learned there were a lot of things to conduct a "modern war" ... See , Iran expands and expands in return for a promise that they will not be spoilsports in the destruction of Turks ; with Iran always looking to its own "West" to gauge the effects anything that happens in the world and will do its best to avoid a fullblown affair . Arabs want to buy weapons to get American good will ; Obama doesn't sell . Company account again : "Turkey is viewing the steps in Qatar as an existential threat to itself. President Erdogan is financed by Qatar. Most Turkish Defence projects are financed by Qatar." So , we use our NATO membership , all the brain power , however a great joke that might or might not prove to be . We do weapons , our good friends the Qataris buy that and make us go and fight Iran or whatever . You are about to give me the truth that Qatar and Iran are pals ? Do so , if you feel so ...

and of course despite the Trumpian bragging , the US defence industry is already complaining ; the Saudis apparently signed an empty paper ; for all the projects were discussed during the terms of spineless jerk and there's not the slightest perceptible movement in any of them ...

it's the perception , something which we Turks famously lack . Because Saudis talk tough , people wanna be ready , just like a peacock opens the tail to impress ... The guy who pushed the PM into the debate about how Muslims discovered America before Columbus , the guy who has a full book or something about the Native American wife of a guy in the Istanbul of 1492 says the PM's advisors might be of Congregation ... Might suddenly jump ship , if the Saudis manage it . So , hot off the press , the UAE gave 3 billion US dollars to Congregation to carry out the coup ... If Nationalism fails , there is always the economic splendour , with massive growth reported . As such , some guy from the Little Imperialist's newspaper says the figures do not match . One goverment document gives , say , 1.5% change in some area ; the simultaneously released other document has that as 5% . New methods to calculate the GNP were supposed to be used after 2018 , but they came into effect last year . That's a full 270 billion fake dollars for you . People are putting out their necks so that the glorious Saudis might notice them ... As it is , these are some very important 270 billions , for if they were not faked , the West would have to invent G25 instead of G20 , where the New Turkey deservedly belongs as the 17th economy of the world .

Interesting slip bolded. ;)

But yes! Oman and the various emirates along the Arabian coast play the game. Everybody pretends that they do not sponsor terrorism and extremists as long as they make an effort not to get caught. Qatar overstepped it and is now paying the price.

:D bread and circus, it has always been about that. Even in democracies, where the advantage is that more people get the bread and circus. I dunno if they overstepped (in the sense that they'll lose from doing it), we still have to see how this will be resolved.

They are already losing. Whether it's a longterm loss or just a temporal setback remains to be seen.

What a travesty. Obama was clueless on the Middle East, but Trump is just embarrassing. He will go down in history as the most ineffective president of the last 100 years.

We get 3% of our oil from the Saudis, is 3 cents off a gallon of gas really worth being allied to such a neurotic regime?

He will go down in history as the most ineffective president of the last 100 years.
Correction, an ineffective president would barricade himself in the Oval Office and let things take their course.
A disastrous president attempts diplomacy-by-tweet and leaves the other members of NATO wondering if the most powerful person in the world is off his rocker.

Yeah I expected Trump to be bad but he is a disaster. At this point if he doesn't start a war I'll be pretty happy.

Trade him for Temer?

Oh no, we are not wondering any more.

For the time being he is still busy trying to tick off promises to his voters.
could take while :)
