Radical Discussion?

Hm, how about RD meaning:

REGULATED discussion.

Sometimes the more obvious choice is also the more elegant and neutral/ least problematic :)

reg·u·late (rgy-lt)
tr.v. reg·u·lat·ed, reg·u·lat·ing, reg·u·lates
1. To control or direct according to rule, principle, or law.
2. To adjust to a particular specification or requirement: regulate temperature.
3. To adjust (a mechanism) for accurate and proper functioning.
4. To put or maintain in order: regulate one's eating habits.

I have to say I'm impressed by how much thought Mise has clearly given to the metaphorical implications of moderator shorthand.

I think you should add the

icon to the posts as well as the [RD] prefix. Looks weird with one and not the other.

If REAL Discussion implies others threads don't have real discussion, does REGULATED Discussion imply that other threads aren't regulated?

Resolute Discussion? Reverent Discussion?

Well, yeah, it does imply that the other threads aren't regulated. I mean, they really aren't regulated. People still have to follow the rules, but a discussion in which people have to follow the rules isn't the same as a discussion that is regulated. "Regulated" is a verb in that phrase -- something that is actively done -- rather than an abstract concept that posters have have at arms length.

The other connotation, of course, is that posters must regulate their posts. When entering a RD thread, we are engaging in a different sort of discussion; we must regulate the tone and style of our discussion in order to fit in with the higher quality and standard of posting that one expects from an RD thread. An RD thread isn't a free-for-all in which people can just ramble on and on in all directions, with no structure or civility. An RD thread is one that demands a regulated, moderated, style and tone, one that is more consensus-seeking than combative.

I think the word "regulated" and its various connotations fit pretty well with the broad intent of RD.

EDIT: Not that I have any skin in the game as I probably won't post much in them anyway :p

That's cos we let Americans in :( It wasn't like that when it was just Europeans in the Chamber and Americans in the Tavern :mischief:

Agree with the lawyer - an occasional zinger is absolutely neccessary to deflate the pompous and the obtuse.

When You think about the color red the first thing that comes to Your mind (to my mind at least) is "the danger" so it might as well be [Really Dangerous] threads ;)
