Back at ya yanks:

I live in southern florida which is considered part of the south, but culturally its really not so as a result of you yanks moving down here, but anyway I see alot of people that always show off American flag prints on their porch and postal buildings or cars.

Considering nobody alive today has any real connection to the events of the american civil war i find it silly that many northeners are still attached to the USA logo after they moved down here.

The C.S.A was founded over disagreements on slavery plain and simple. But not anymore so you would think that northerners would appreciate the south now but eh.....

The decade leading up to the civil war and leading up to Lincoln's inauguration and the following cessation of southern states from the Union was ultimately over the intense disagreements on how to handle slavery in new states and whether to abolish it in old ones. I still haven't seen any convincing arguments that it was over a different issue and not slavery. But that don't mean they don't exist. Why be it a done deal?

Basically what im trying to say is if you really adore the Union states and what that cold land stands for. Understand that you are now in the south. When you are in the south of course.

But i don't judge someones character if they walk around wearing red neck union logos on their clothing or have a union flag on the back of their pick up truck. Although I do wonder why they hang down here and don't adapt their flags and then go around doubting that us native southerners are rational thinkers.

Damn yankees:

This idea that in 2010 its "northerners" shows the myopia that some people have.

That said, wearing your national flag as an article of clothing, etc... is, IMHO, bad taste and inappropriate.

Lastly, do you not get that the US flag is the flag for ALL Americans.

If anyone was walking around w/ a flag that had 40 stars (or however many states there were in 1860) you might actually come anywhere near a point. But, you don't even see that. Sorry, but this is one of the silliest response threads I've ever seen.

It is extremely rare to ever see people using Civil War era Union flags for any purpose outside of specific history documentation/reenactment. Much less common even than the original 13 stars flag.

So I would agree it could be seen to be stupid or offensive if done by random people in random contexts. But it also is on a scale probably several thousands times if not more smaller than the prevalence of Confederate flags which means the latter would generally be more of a problem.

Obligatory quote:

Homer: "Why does it [this flag] have 47 stars"
Apu: "It must have been made in the brief period in 1912 after New Mexico became a state but before when Arizona did"

I've always thought the American flag was rather ugly.

Not enough plants on it? One too many colors?

At least it isn't

It's just an abomination left over from a traitorous rebellion.

I mean what do people think of when they see that flag? They think of imperialism, nuking cities, American Indian genocide.

It's a shame we still have to put up with it. Not all Americans who wave the flag are genocidal imperialist but still I think Americans should find a less controversial flag to associate themselves with.

We just enjoy the sweet taste of victory.

it would be silly if they were displaying the civil war flag of the union, just as it is for people to display the confederate flag.

Don't make me go Jo March on all you and start writing to the Weekly Volcano about the flag.
