While We Wait: Boredom Strikes Back

NES chat appears to be down for me. :(

Kraznaya, is that Ellen Page in your avatar?

Really?!

Have people really not learned the whole story about glass houses and throwing stones? I mean, I know I'm not around that much but still, it blows my mind that these comments are still thrown around.

Well, if Thlayli is reading this, we'd rather have Thlayli and no TACNES than no Thlayli at all.

Yes but if we had Thlayli then we would invariably have some form of TNES which would shrivel and die like an aborted fetus. So then we would have no Thlayli again.

Its a deadly cycle if heartbreak and disappointment.

I have a couple general NES questions (sorry to be a complete "newb"):

1. How do "orders" work and does every NES require an order system? Are they something like, orders are submitted for every NES at the same time, or are they on different schedules?

2. Can a newb such as myself start a new thread in this forum, or do I need some special approval first?

3. In the NES I have signed up, by Lord Iggy, there are updates, and I noticed other ones have updates, too. Is the update always written by the referee, or is it something everyone participates in?

4. Also in that NES, there are not really any numbers being used. It is mostly writing it seems. But in other threads, there are lots of numbers. That doesn't seem very intimidating to me (sometimes it does...), but I love ref-ing SPace 1889 campaigns (which use a lot of #s), but if the thread has a lot of #s does that mean it doesn't have that written element as much (I like the writing part of it!)??

Again, sorry for these questions. Thanks in advance for the responses!

Orders are basically what you want your [country, player, entity] to do in a given turn. They vary from NES to NES; some NESes don't have them at all. And virtually all NESes are on different orders schedules.

Go for it. I advise asking questions in their own threads, though, especially here. And it's probably better to wait before you run a NES, or at least test the waters first in here or in the development thread.

Updates are almost always written by the mod, usually employing the orders that have been sent in by everybody. Some lazier mods incorporate sections of the players' orders or stories directly into the update. But ultimately, the mod writes the update.

Lots of numbers and story-writing aren't exclusive. It can just get hard for players and mods to manage both at the same time. Most NESes usually incorporate some kind of a balance. Iggy's NES is really, really heavy on the stories. It's semi-unusual in that regard.

Here is a not yet recognized regular answering questions! BTW: Welcome to NESing! :celebration:

1. Orders basically tells the Moderator (Dungeon Master) what you are going to do. Every NES is seperate from every other NES.

2. Yes, you can. However, it is a good idea to post ideas in the New NESes ideas thread to gauge opinion, and start a Pre-NES to get hype and any tweaks you need for a larger, new project.

3. Only the Moderator can write updates from the orders, however, everyone can write stories about his/her country. Please write! It makes a NES much stronger against loss of interest and makes it much more fun!

4. No, numbers can both limit and expand the horizon for story telling. Just make sure we know that they do, or you can black box them like Bird Jaguar's NES and show only the obvious ones. To make for more story telling, don't forget to get nice updates in (but still keep it within reasonable time within reason) and make plot-threads so other players can expand upon. Another idea that I don't support is to give bonuses based on stories. Some is ok, but too big or too little will lead to ignoring it or a mass of cheep stories.

Please ask more, don't forget the FAQ thread and the NES guide!

EDIT: By the Pancreator's Will! I've been X-posted!

Thanks to you, too, for the quick response - and I feel quite embarrassed... I didn't see that FAQ thread until you mentioned it! I think giving bonuses on stories is also a bad idea, because then it might cause people to just cut and paste or write quick, poorly-written stories. But that does make me think of one more question. Are most people here in it for the story (as the name implies), or is it more competitive play type of things? I myself am more story-driven than competitive.

For me it's neither. Usually, I'm in it just to build something cool. The exception, of course, is purely story-based NESes (like MutantNES).

Yeah. That culminated in 2005-7 in certain das NESes where some players basically relied on story-writing powerups to run their country instead of actually making, you know, good decisions. I was one of these reprobates.

Meh. Mostly the story. I don't play in NESes that have settings or histories that don't appeal to me. This is why I don't play in a whole lot of NESes these days.

Thanks for all of this useful info. Yeah it makes sense to only be in stories with appealing settings, otherwise might as well play a computer game. That's why I love pen and paper with my friends, because we aren't purely playing AI - it is everyone together. No point to just rely on #s in that situation, in my humble opinion.

well I'll put up a write-up I made for an idea and see what you all think of it, and ask for some help/suggestions, or whatever else.
