I heard on CNN today that the newest polls have Biden and Sanders leading polling, with a plurality of the supporters for either saying they regarded the other as their second choice... which is noteworthy given that Sanders and Biden are about as far apart on the political spectrum as two candidates for the Democratic nomination could be. Seems to be a strong indicator that their policies/positions aren't what folks are basing their support on.

Name recognition. Dems want someone who can beat Trump. At the start, that's "someone I've heard of."

On the flip side, as other candidates start making up the vast name recognition gap they will eat into both Biden and Sanders, but at first glance it seems likely they would eat into Sanders more because they have more overlap.

In all seriousness, this rift alone will be worth a handful of percentage points at the balloting. Obama may have been a rock star but he also ran in the midst of a similar rift in the Republican party.
