What's with the West Coast?

nsm_depth_2010021005_National.jpg

El Nino makes winters on the West Coast considerably warmer and drier.

Go find another map, there's a couple of days in which even more of the continent is at least a little snowy, while the West Coast remains unsnowed upon because of El Nino.

Either El Nino or La Nina, which does pretty much the exact opposite of El Nino.

Don't we have El Nino every single damned year nowadays?

As what choxorn said, it swings back between the two (El and La Nina) every couple of years. Like right now, we're in a pretty strong La Nina, which is why our hurricane season is rather above average

Guess the Map!

This game is straightforward. I (or someone) post a map of anything, with all the labels, etc, or even parts of the actual map removed, and you guess what it's supposed to represent!

Here's a relatively easy one to start us off

The G-100.

Well, I've determined what it isn't.

Allies of WWI: Japan, Italy aren't included.

Allies of WWII: Brazil isn't included, Spain is.

Most spoken languages: Portuguese should have more speakers than Tagalog, unless the Philippines is being counted as Spanish-speaking territory.

Extent of empires: Switzerland had no empire.

Countries that have fought a war since 1945: missing Korea, Vietnam, Angola and Mozambique, among others.

It can't be anything economic because tiny Malawi is in, but Germany and Japan are not. Same for anything related to social welfare.

It can't be flag colors because Iran would mean red, green, and white are out of the mix and those appear on others. Brazil with blue and yellow, Korea with black... leaving very few colors left behind. Nor is it their shapes.

... so, as the tree said to the woodsman, "I'm stumped."

Nothing to do with colonies or colonialism either.

It certainly isn't the presence of American military installations abroad. Nor can it be countries with border disputes (I think Ethiopia has had issues with this in the last 20-or-so years...)

The thing that stood out to me was the complete absence of any Portuguese-speaking state; Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Sao Tome and Principe are all greyed out. Similarly, why is East Pakistan (Bangladesh) greyed out and West Pakistan not?

But Macau is in, and India (for Daman and Diu) is too.

That's a clue.

Bangladesh isn't an English-speaking country?

Maybe it's official languages being one of those six? That may be a silly statement, but my knowledge of other countries is horrible.

You know that game where everyone alters a map and posts it here? We should do it again!

Map of the USA.png

This is it finished.

Sorry you have to push on it, I don't know how to make it big automatically. :(
