I guess as well as Roman Empire fetishism there is also a kinda an underdog thing going on.
I am not exactly a Byzantophile, but I must say playing as the Byzantines has a strange appeal to it.
Face it, it's a good story - intrigue, empire, fight against stronger enemies, glory, twists and reverses, betrayal, lost opportunities, and a final battle. If a history of one country could be distilled into a Hollywood blockbuster, this one would make a lot of money.
Also, in EU3 I like to destroy Turkey (and Islam) over and over again, and it's a lot of fun doing it as the Byzantines.
Serious question: why are there so many Byzantophiles on CFC/Paradox/history-related forums? Outside of Roman Empire fetishism and Greek nationalism I can't think of a good reason.
Funny, I don't actually see all that many of them outside of people who are actually Greek.Serious question: why are there so many Byzantophiles on CFC/Paradox/history-related forums? Outside of Roman Empire fetishism and Greek nationalism I can't think of a good reason.

Not sure about here (probably what you said applies) but over at the Paradox forums there are many byzantinophiles. Only a minority of those liking the Byzantine Empire is Greek, apparently.
Not to mention the glorious, peaceful Christians resisting the evil militaristic Muslims.Maybe the Byzantine Empire is a potent symbol of a refined nature fighting against barbaric entities

Kind of. Paradox Byzantine nuts are kind of like people who get obsessed by World War II because of Call of Duty or some crap. They might be numerous, but they mostly only annoy the people who actually know what was going on - and I say this as someone who absolutely is not a "byzantinophile" of any stripe. Not sure about here (probably what you said applies) but over at the Paradox forums there are many byzantinophiles. didn't they ally with the odd Muslim state from time to time?
