I guess as well as Roman Empire fetishism there is also a kinda an underdog thing going on.

I am not exactly a Byzantophile, but I must say playing as the Byzantines has a strange appeal to it.

Face it, it's a good story - intrigue, empire, fight against stronger enemies, glory, twists and reverses, betrayal, lost opportunities, and a final battle. If a history of one country could be distilled into a Hollywood blockbuster, this one would make a lot of money.

Also, in EU3 I like to destroy Turkey (and Islam :p ) over and over again, and it's a lot of fun doing it as the Byzantines.

You see, I never it's history as that way. I always saw the Eastern Roman Empire as that placeholder until the Sublime State comes along.

Serious question: why are there so many Byzantophiles on CFC/Paradox/history-related forums? Outside of Roman Empire fetishism and Greek nationalism I can't think of a good reason.

easier for rich christian white people to fetishize rich christian white people

naw mang its the white mang vs the towel head thang that gets whitey going

Pah, greeks. You tell me they're white? Come on, only the Germanic Race is truly white.

easy for a slav to say

the Galizien part is completely wrong: it shows Galizien along Carpathes as clearly catholic, while the upper part as mixed with uniates: it should be uniates along the Carpathes and mixed with Latins further north.

there should be protestants in Cieszyn area and Orawa.

I wonder whether there is a map in the Universe you'd find "accurate". Probably not.

Also, simple maps for quick orientation aren't meant to be excessively detailed. And read what it says in the description.

roman catholics were like 10-15% in the part that is shown as roman catholic...

Also, if it shows only religions that are over 50%, why are there areas shown as both uniate and roman catholics

It's not a minor mistake: that is wrong religion in an area (together with Transcarpathian Ruthenia) of a size of half of your country.
But the other points, about these tiny protestant regions - I concede, I'm expecting too much.

Funny, I don't actually see all that many of them outside of people who are actually Greek.

Not sure about here (probably what you said applies) but over at the Paradox forums there are many byzantinophiles. Only a minority of those liking the Byzantine Empire is Greek, apparently.

As to why it is popular i have my own theory. Maybe the Byzantine Empire is a potent symbol of a refined nature fighting against barbaric entities (simplified form of the history of course, but symbols coming from historical entities are always simplifications). So the weak but intelligent individual can relate to the Empire.

from what I see at the Plaza it's considered a crime never to have played as BYZ/ destroyed them.

Not to mention the glorious, peaceful Christians resisting the evil militaristic Muslims.

Kind of. Paradox Byzantine nuts are kind of like people who get obsessed by World War II because of Call of Duty or some crap. They might be numerous, but they mostly only annoy the people who actually know what was going on - and I say this as someone who absolutely is not a "byzantinophile" of any stripe.
