Ask a Turkish citizen

This may be an odd request, but could you recommend Civ4 diplomusic for Mustafa Kemal? He's the third Turkish leader in my civ mod, and I want unique music for every leader. He currently uses Mehmed's music. I want three musics for Atatürk: Early, Middle, and Late. If you can help me here, thanks.

I'm normally not a fan of using national anthems as diplomacy music, but the İstiklâl Marşı would fit Ataturk in my opinion.

How are historical figures like Osman, Suleiman and Mehmed II seen in modern Turkey?
Osman and Mehmed II are seen as great leaders almost without flaws. Suleiman is seen great as well by majority, but some claim that ottoman stagnation starts with Suleiman, his militaristic success is not doubted, but first signs of economical problems -which led the demise of the empire- started in his reign.

1) anthem of the tenth year. this anthem is composed for tenth year of the republic. and it singlehandedly symbolyses ataturks rule between 1923 -1938.

2) Anthem of İzmir: Anthem composed for liberation of İzmir and praise to Atatürk.

3) I am unsure if you should use this. It's a personal favorite of ataturk. At least this song is known for being the song ataturk likes the most.

4) This one is actually a Sweden Folk Song. But written turkish lyrics in 1916 and song by Ataturk and his friends in "SS Bandırma" and represents Turkish war of independence.

Do only nutjobs believe in the "theory" that Homer was a proto-turk named Omar?

I guess so, but it still seems too unreal to even exist... ;)
I haven't heard of this "theory" but it seem legit...:)

Thanks!

I think I'll use the Vatan Marşı for the Early music(Last Link), the Akdeniz Marşı for the Middle Music(Second to Last), and the İstiklâl Marşı for the Late Music(Not linked, but it works).

Maybe a lot of the more bizarre theories date back to the glory days of Turkish nationalism. There was a theory promoted by Ataturk, perhaps even invented by him, that Turkish was the world's original language, that all other languages descended from it. I think this theory has largely been abandoned by now.

Moderator Action: Spam deleted. Posts that essentially say, "I know this is off-topic and I'm not allowed to post it, but I want the last word anyway," are not appreciated.

You're reffering to Sun language theory, It was never accepted by majority, and with atatürk's death it's abandoned immediately.

he was turning away from it as the WW2 approached , because the Europeans would soon have better things to while away their imperialistic lust , like killing each other , meaning there was less need for glorious super duper history that would unify the young nation.

plus Omar would be Ömer , "Arabian" in origin and the thing to avoid when a more glorious past was being invented . That's kinda some joke on par with "otobüs" being "çok oturgaçlı götürgeç" and one one would have to know Turkish to get the impossibility of it . Suffice it to say it rarely failed to get girls smiling , when all the jokes were already used .

if you could shape turkish borders at the beginning of XX century, how would they be different from what they are now?

I am a Communist I don't believe in borders if I had power I would remove all borders.

What is turkish opinion to:

1) The turkish republics in central asia.

2) Alexander the great, gengis khan and napoleon.

1) Correct terminology is Turkic. Turkish refers to only Turks in Turkey. But the problem here in Turkey we do not any terms for Turkish. We use Turk both refer to Turkish and Turkic. There's a huge debate going on about it. But to your answer Majority of Turkish people sees them as their brothers and dream of a state unting all Turks. (see. Turan) But other than a few nutjobs no one really thinks this is a real possibility.
2) Napoleon < Alexander < Gengis Khan (Cengiz is a common Turkish name btw) < ATATÜRK :)

How do you feel about the fact that the English translation of your country name is also a large bird?
don't care realy. But there are some get offended and tries to correct you by sayin "it's not Turkey it's Türkiye"

Is this a coincidence by the way?
No. It's named after Turkey. First brits gone to America Thought Turkey is a Çulluk (a turkey like bird native to Turkey) and named after it.
The name "Turkey" in Turkish has nothing to do with birds, right?
Nope. but we call the bird turkey "hindi".

Do you watch Muhteşem Yüzyıl? I saw part of it last night at my (sort of) boyfriend's house. It has great costumes and set design but the audio was so badly matched to the video that I wondered if some of the actors were even speaking Turkish originally. And I was watching this on TV.

I hate Turkish TV especially series. I can't stand overuse of background music.
