Video: Minnesota senator says Minneapolis schools destroyed by integration

The DFL has released a video of this week’s statement by Burnsville Republican Sen. Dan Hall on school integration. “I watched Minneapolis get destroyed, so I not only didn’t want my kids in the school system,” he said. “I took them out of Minneapolis because they ruined our neighborhoods with integration and [de]segregation.” Hall made his remarks during debate about a move by Minnesota Republicans to repeal school integration laws, specifically a decades-long program that aims to diversify schools in the Twin Cities metro area and Duluth.

The video concludes with the text, “When the vote was taken, every Republican agreed with Sen. Hall and voted to cut desegregation funds.”

Frankly I'm speechless. But is what he says correct? Could it be that black people ruined the schools?

I could, maybe, entertain the argument that busing ruined a community nature of a school and thus such actions lead to poorer performance, but much beyond that, you're just a racist dick.

People like being with their own kind. Homogeneity is the best way. Look at the demographics of any town in America. The citizens want to be segregated, it is only social engineers who want to force people to live together against their own wishes.

Integration is a good thing, Provides diverse culture and experience.

However, I don't agree with our modern concept of trying to make every child equal. They should be given the same instruction and resources and if some should excel and others fail, that's the way it is. You should not deprive time from those that excel and dedicate a disproportionate amount of resources to those that fail just to try to make everyone on the same page. Most of the time, trying to do that is an epic fail anyways.

Why are there 'desegregation funds' in the first place when segregation is already illegal? You should just go to the school whose district you are in whether you are white or black or whatever race.

I don't mind being around whites.

Bad speech.

The senator opposes busing, which as far as I know has never actually improved educational outcomes. Hopefully downtown or someone else with backgrounds in urban education programs can come in and enlighten us.

I never liked the idea of forcing kids to go to a school on the other side of town from where they live rather than the one just a few blocks away just to meet 'diversity quotas'.

Someone in Minnesota is complaining about this??
Contrary to what Fargo may tell you, we do have a fairly signifigant Somali/Hmong population along with one of the highest black/white employment gaps.

Last I heard studies suggest that mixing worse with better students does a better job in pulling the better students down than lifting the worse students up.
As black students tend to be of lesser quality - the answer is yes. I realize that this is an answer most uncomfortable, but expressing uncomfortable logical conclusions is also the most fun :smug:

Hmmm. I've always heard the opposite....

Then it's not really the integration that has failed so much as the education of black students prior to it.

Yeah I have heard that one, too. And it would be awesome if it were true. But to my knowledge it has been debunked. It also makes sense when you think about it.
It is just way more easier in many ways to pull others down then to lift others up. Hence it is more likely to happen.

Yes one can interpret it that way.
But you might as well shun education all together for not being able to eliminate social factors. Though for instance the US practice of financing schools for less wealthy by said less wealthy surely worsens the matter, no doubt. And I am sure there are other factors of importance to be named.

It's true.
The concept of liking being with people alike us.

The problem in your reasoning is that you're implying that "people like us" means "people with same racial background than us", while it's much more "people with same social background" or "people like-minded".

So yes, we want to be with people we can relate to. But this doesn't imply racial likeness.

In my county we're (sorta) going through the same thing. Ever since the 80s our school system has been evenly integrated (so, since our county is 30 percent black, each school is expected to have 30 percent of it's students to be black, and so on with other races, including wealth statuses). Recently though, some people have not been happy with it, not because they don't like integration, but because our schools also have to have an equal amount of wealthy/middle class/poor students, some students have to go to school across town, which means being on a bus 4 hours each day, so some people want to get rid of how even our schools are. That's not to say they want white-only schools and rich-only schools and hispanic-only schools, they just don't their kids to ride on the bus forever to keep up with demographics.

Anyway, it seems like the Minnesota guy is an idiot, and he seems like racist, but he may just be really stupid. I mean, he did graduate with a 6th grade reading ability (how the frack do you do that?).
