MB3 - Old Testament Bunfight

OK, I'm up then.

I hope things work out for you, Karasu.

190 (0): Hmm, it looks as though as though the Zulus are going to take Hispalis before we can honourably go to war with the Romans. Barring the semi-exploit of a "roadblock RoP", there's not a lot we can do about it.

I reach RoP agreements with the Celts (throwing in 1 gpt) and the Zulus (throwing in our WM), to give us security on our northern flank before we start attacking elsewhere.

Our ivory deal with the Celts runs out, and since we stand well for luxuries, I don't renew it.

Iznik is close to completing a university, which won't help us much until the glorious future in which we fly to work in air-cars, take all our nutrition in the form of pills, and resume doing our own research. ;) I switch the town to a palace prebuild, to be applied towards either a bank or Adam Smith, depending on circumstances.

Peace breaks out all over, unfortunately: the Persians and the Egyptians, the Persians and the Iroquois, the Aztecs and the Greeks.

210 (1): A jungle burn near Aydin doesn't reveal BG.

I send Education to the Iroquois for 150 gold and their WM. The other tech laggards don't have anything meaningful to give.

230 (2): The Zulus take Hispalis, and the Persians take Carthage.

250 (3): Our furs deal with the Iroquois expires prematurely, due to some fluke of war--though in fact, I would have attacked them anyway. We declare against the Iroquois and move ten knights into the area between Mauch Chunk and Tonawanda.

A jungle burn near Aydin reveals BG.

260 (4): We take Mauch Chunk from one spearman, and Tonawanda from two spearmen--but both are hill towns, and we lose a knight in each attack. :(

The Persians and Greeks make peace.

270 (5): I cash-rush Aydin's harbour, since our dyes deal with the Greeks has a while to run and we'll need a sea route to Greece once we go to war with the Romans.

I let our RoP with the Babylonians expire. Unlike most of the world, they aren't marching half their army through our homeland, so we don't need the security of a formal treaty as much.

The Zulus and Greeks make peace.

280 (6): I send Invention to the Egyptians for a worker, 23 gold, and their WM--probably the last deal they'll ever make.

The Romans and Babylonians form an anti-Greek alliance.

270 (7): We build a direct road to Babylon, south of Mauch Chunk--another reputation-saving precaution before we attack the Romans.

The Aztecs build Bach before anyone starts Adam Smith, thus killing the Wonder cascade. Now we can treat the palace build in Iznik as a Smith prebuild, with a good chance of getting it.

The Zulus move a large stack next to Cumae.

The Babylonians wipe out the Egyptians.

280 (8): We make peace with the Iroquois, gaining 79 gold, their WM, and Music Theory--the latter being now useless, expect that Sid gets so distraught about bypassed techs.

The gems outside Mauch Chunk come on line.

The first important change in the tech situation this round occurs, when the Greeks get Banking. Time for a twofer. The Babylonians will give us Chemistry for 88 gpt, or for 12 gpt and saltpetre. I don't want to make them stronger, but I reason that our Sipahis won't much care whether they're attacking pikemen or musketmen, and this is too much money to leave on the table. I make the saltpetre deal, and then send Chemistry to the Greeks for Banking, their TM, and 3 gold.

The Babylonians, Celts, and Romans all have Metallurgy. We've just established that waiting for the Greeks to get a new tech is a slow business, and we need to be able to see who's got Military Tradition. So I take the plunge: 93 gpt and our WM to the Celts for Metallurgy and their TM. The Babylonians already have Military Tradition , but it's beyond our means at the monopoly price.

The Greeks will give us 8 gpt, 40 gold, and Navigation for Metallurgy. I decide I don't want to limit our warmaking options any further for this modest reward.

I demand that the Romans remove their one trespassing pikeman from our territory, and unfortunately they do it, so we have to declare war on them.

Cumae presents some nasty choices. Due to the ponderous approach of the Zulus, it must be well garrisoned. But we can't try the slow technique of pillaging until it falls to size six, because by that time the Zulus will have taken it, as they already have Hispalis and Viroconium. So I launch a direct assault, hoping that the retreat ability of our knights will keep losses down, and it half works: we require fifteen knight attacks to destroy the garrison of six pikemen and an MDI, get three retreats, and lose five knights.

We take Neapolis from its garrison of three pikemen, losing two knights.

310 (9): We would probably be able to take Ravenna next turn--except that Babylonian and Celtic units on the way to their war with Greece completely block our path.

The Persians make peace with the Carthaginians (down to two cities) when they could easily finish them off.

A forest chop near Antalya reveals BG.

We get a palace expansion.

320 (10): We take Antium from its peculiar garrison of four pikemen, a catapult, and an army containing just one MDI, losing two knights.

My RNG luck this round wasn't flagrantly awful in any one battle, but it was consistently poor. Five of our knights reached the decisive round of an attack, with both combatants redlined, and all five died.

We generated four elite knights this round, though five elite victories didn't produce a Great Leader.

The Roman front:

MB3-320AD.JPG

THE FUTURE:

We should probably take Ravenna next, advancing by way of that riverside hill which knights can reach from Antium in one turn.

Antium may present a real flip problem, because it has four resisting citizens and we may not take Rome for a while. In case you'd like to abandon and replace it, I've positioned a settler next to it on what seems to me the best tile--not on fresh water, unfortunately, but this is necessary to avoid cultural overlap with Uruk.

Cumae and Neapolis are set up to continue starving down, but they aren't in resistance, so you can change this if you're feeling confident about flips.

We haven't encountered any Roman mounted units yet.

The only ongoing Wonder build in the rest of the world is Magellan in Rome, and we're in a position to do something about that :vampire:, so I like our chances of getting Smith in Iznik, where we have 216 shields accumulated.

Konya could work one more tile, but I'm keeping it in Love status with a clown to lessen the flip risk.

Izmit could use a courthouse, if you can bear to sacrifice the knight being built there.

Mugla needs the attention of more workers, in particular to mine its hill.

As our corrupt eastern towns begin to generate workers, they should probably be used for merges to get all our productive towns up to size twelve (Iznik first).

We're completely up to date on required techs. The Babylonians still have a monopoly on Military Tradition, and Navigation is also in play.

Wow NP, wonderful progress in spite of the so-so RNG luck. :goodjob:

I haven't looked at the save but from the picture I can see the Babs have eliminated Egypt, and will be our biggest threat IMO. The sad thing is we can't use other AI to do fighting for us since we almost block them now.

The Orange fungus spreads :D

Good work NP

Got it

Hadn't realised I was up :o

RL got in the way today :(

Just starting now :)

Ted

Don't worry about it Ted. This game is meandering along quite nicely :)

I've made it to turn 5 so far,

but I'm going to slepp on whether or not to end the war.

I've taken Rome & Ravenna but a huge stack of Roman MDI are threatening Mauch Chunk (our only source of Gems).
MB3-Mauch-Chunk.jpg

I held some of them off last turn but I think we'll lose the town next turn if I don't make peace. The only thing Rome has to offer is Lutetia, a tundra town way down in the SE, which has Furs.

Any thoughts or comments anyone?

Ted

You have an elite musket fortified on a hill with all its hitpoints in tact. Personally I'd carry on. Second choice abandon the city and re-settle. Third choice give the city to the Iroquois then take it back. I can't think of a fourth choice. :D

As long as you're reasonably confident that we can keep going and take the last two Roman cities in their homeland (one of which has Leonardo, IIRC), I'd say we should remain at war. I'd only make peace to save Mauch Chunk if we were stalled on the main front.

Good work taking Rome. :goodjob: How large was the garrison?

OK you bloodthirsty warmongers,

I'll press on against Veii (Leonardo's)

@NP
The garrison in Rome was 7 reg & 1 vet Pike, Ravenna 4 reg & 1 vet Pike and a 1hp Vet Knight :) I only had just enough troops to take them in 1 turn.

Looking at our position. I'll attack Rome from the NW next. If we don't get rid of Rome then flips may be a real problem.
I think Roman troops will be returning from Egyptian soil so I'll need to strengthen Southeastern defences. This will be a problem as there is no direct route.

Notes
I upgraded injured vets to get double benefit :)
There's still a vet Knight left in Rome and 8 Warriors, 2 Spears and 3 Pike scattered around the map in need of upgrading (or not)
We can go to war with the Zulu immediately or wait 12 turns then take on the Aztecs, Celts or Babylon. Personally, I'd wait and hit Babylon hard with lots of Cannon, Muskets& Sipahi. Slow advance pillaging everything in sight.
The Celts and Babylon are up Economics & Physics (at least)
The worker gang NW of Hispalis is capable of clearing jungle and roading in 1 turn.
I'm still starving Rome and Veii - better safe than flipping.

The save is at http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads5/MB3-420AD.zip (but the server seems to be down at the moment. I'll check back later)

Sipahi... [dance]

Wow, Ted! :goodjob:

If we are going to take on Babylon (to which I agree BTW) how are we going to defend Alexandria? Taking on Babylon is what I would do, but I'm learning I tend to ignore the easy pickings, which not always is good. So I would very much like to hear what everybody thinks about who is going to be the next victim...

Way to go Ted :goodjob:

Taking on Babylon during our GA when our UU is at its most useful is a must IMO. It would also be nice to get a leader for a place jump.

Earp: You are UP. You've been very quiet lately, everything OK?

Actually, I was hoping that Babylon couldn't resist an undefended town and would declare on us before the 12 turns are up :)

BTW the military screenshot was to show the obsolete units :D
