NES/IOT Merger Poll

Should IOT and NES be merged?

Just to clarify: tags, or anything else, that appear to be trolling or flaming shouldn't be used even where the intention is not to do so, and even where the "victim" knows this. The reason is twofold. First, people who do intend to upset the victim might claim that it's just a joke or that the victim knows it's meant in good fun, and we don't want that to be a legitimate excuse. Second, people who don't know the context or individuals involved might see it and think we allow victimisation of the kind that it appears to be. So those tags shouldn't have been used even if the intention was benign and understood to be so.

It's also in the rules... Inside jokes are not acceptable.

Banter and Chat
'Banter' between 'friends' is treated no differently from any other forum posts. For example, if you flame a 'friend' and think that because you don't really 'mean it' then it is OK, it will still be considered as flaming and dealt with accordingly. Moderators to not have the time, nor inclination, to check with each person whether they are offended by the flaming, and it would also result in the appearance that the rules are not applied consistently.

Also, I want to make one final point. A lot of IOTers are juvenile. I don't mean that in a pejorative way; I'm talking about the community demographics. The average age of the IOTer is most likely high school aged, or early college.

I think this is being a bit petty Thlayli. Was the joke crass and tasteless? Yeah, a bit. But is that really a reason to declare the mutual incompatibility of the two communities? I don't think so. There are plenty of reasons why I don't think a merger should happen, 1st on the list being I still don't really see the point, but "irreconcilable immaturity" is not one of them.

Plus it's kind of silly to act as though #nes has never done crap like this. The word f*g was thrown around on an everyday basis when Dachs and Kraz had ops.

I was really uncomfortable with that too though, Owen. I never participated in that either. And notably, those guys aren't in charge anymore and that kind of talk isn't allowed. :p

I'm not saying IOT is irreconcilably immature. Their community is definitely improving. I just think that we're at different stages in our community demographics, and pushing the two together could cause conflicts based on that.

Why conflict? Why cannot university students (like I) get on with those in high school? I manage to get on with IOTers despite being A) older B) in uni C) the roars that sometimes occur. I can tell you that age should not be a barrier to the merge; nor should we be judge IOT as "for high school students" and so on. Thor and I are examples of why it is rude to place age marks on game subforums anyway.

You're 23 and apparently an elder.
Lec is 21(?) and is apparently not.
The amount of confusion in this

We need to start surveying our ages... maybe we may turn out older then expected.

Age has nothing to do with maturity or skill.

I was talking specific a reply to Civ. Nothing has to do with NES nor the merge in that specific post! If you must see all talk about NES than go ahead.

As for the post before: so? There are high school kids who are mature and skilled, while there are adults who are brat like. I do not see how this observation will be important to the debate about merging; neither is the topic about surveying ages but hay!

the skeleton have taken over here as well!!!!!!!!!!! there stealing our cishet tears!!!!

Sone for instance is not in his 20s let but he does show a merit.

I'm glad somebody who is two years older than me thinks I show "merit".

Well, the time has arrived and the poll is now closing. As you can see, the results above are over 62% in favor of the merger without any alternations or considerations. Over the past two weeks, numerous issues have been brought up here and elsewhere and for a time it seemed like our communities were close to sundering ever further rather than growing closer. There were more than a couple of nights where I regretted ever posting this poll and thread for the discussions that ensued.

Now that we are at the end of the poll, I believe that if anything, the disputes have brought all of us a bit closer together as a community. I have learned more about other NESers and IOTers in the past two weeks than I had ever knew before, and I am convinced that we are more alike than we are different. Based on the sentiments expressed by a number of people throughout these discussions as well as the raw results of the poll data the moderator staff agrees that the merger go forward in the next few weeks.

The process is not going to be painless and I look forward to the animated discussions that will likely emerge between and within the communities. We as a combined community have many details to discuss on the look and layout of the newly merged subforum. These changes will not take place based on polls or majority versus minority, but over time through experimentation and debate.

Let us go forward together. ;)
