New NESes, ideas, development, etc

Since it seems pretty clear that I've decided upon a Core reboot now, how does this look? I'll probably have a thread (either game or pre-NES, not sure if I need a pre-NES though) up soon, but I did some quick work on this - basic language demographics, a repost of the timeline, and 4 periods I figured would be the most interesting dates to play at, with a (very) rough overview of each.

Spoiler :

So, is there still interest in my NES with Core starting back up?

Edit: Here is my idea:

Why didn't you lsten to the warnings? Why didn't you believe the newscasters? Well, it is too late now.

It started with isolated attacks in China, usually explained away by the government: they said it was drugs or rabies. The victim would be alone, and then a scream would tear through the night. By the time the police got there, government agents in haz-mat suits were carrying off corpses with what seemed o be human bite-marks. Soon, the attacks spread, and sightings poured in of figures shambling away from the scene.

The Chinese government, wishing to prevent panic, told the populace that it was a new strain of rabies, and that placated the masses for a while. Eventually, however, the entire eastern seaboard was experiencing frequent attacks and some American idiot began to sell 'Empire,' a drug said to cure these new 'Cuban Rabies.' The attacks did seem to abate during month of June, but by July they began up again, this time all over the world. Refugees from China fled to India to Russia to Europe, spreading the disease to the entire globe.

By August, a newscaster broke the story: it wasn't rabies, it was a disease reanimating corpses. The people of the world, although they already suspected, suddenly had their worst fears confirmed. Riots in America began, and whole cities were burned to the ground. The government soon lost control, and the President fled to Hawaii. The zombies, for lack of a better word, spread throughout the nation, and attempts to stop them are a total failure: the military pulled back to the west, setting up a defensive line at the Rockies.

I'm thinking of letting people start in one city, but I can't choose where. Any ideas?

My suggestion for a zombie-plague individual NES would be an European city with a river wide enough to act as a barrier, and that it is cosmopolitan enough to allow for people from all over the world to be there. For example, Paris or Rome.

I once had a really long spiel that involved Delhi as the origin.
Granted, I was shooting for the "closest medically-feasbile thing to a zombie apocalypse" (friend of mine asked a couple of us to come up with a scenario), but it still works, location-wise.

Yes! Imagine the possibilities! I'm envisioning a dam city situation, with the characters running to blow up the dam, destroy the city and prevent the spread!

Lisbon would be a cool location, but progressing to somewhere in the Americas, trying to get behind that defensive line.

Low Countries can work, if they break the dams.

Levee,

we zouden de dijken doorsteken

lit. We would pierce the levees (or dykes if you prefer :p)

The Americas are overdone! Europe should get more support in here, you know. European cities have the advantage of having some very narrow streets, excellent for barricading against zombies. Rome has the Seven Hills and the Vatican, Paris the Île de la Cité...

I would like for more "Normal" people react to the apocalypse. Not entirely normal (I think most people have at least 1 useful trait or ability) but not "Uber marine boyscout zombie fanatic tank owner" or "Normal, other than strangely exotic weapon and extreme proficiency therewith." But "Normal, with some basic survival skills and an bit of extra knowledge on X"

This doesn't have bearing on the actual NES itself. Yeah, I agree that this twist would make it more interesting, as long as the Mod follows it.

How about Amsterdam? Especially the city centre is a rifraf of canals, small alleys, squares, weird corners etc.

I honestly don't know much about any foreign cities.

The general consensus seems to be Rome or Amsterdam. Right now I'm leaning towards Amsterdam.

And Terrance, I won't approve really powerful characters. It makes the game boring.

Hi guys, I am going to place it in Amsterdam. Also, I am making a pre-thread right now. Come chck it out once it is up.

I have been tinkering with another Nobility/Family type NES which will be character driven.

This will take place in the Kingdom of Rome, when the last monarch has been driven out of town and the Nobles (wealthy) rule as a council. So this NES invites the players to flesh out Rome in their desire and own directions. Ignore Carthage and focus on expanding to the East. Defeat Carthage and expand no more. Or control the world, Roman style. The options are limitless and as Noble Families you will hold the future of Rome in your hands and just maybe if you command the loyalty of the troops and the popularity of the plebes ultimate power could be yours.

Basically as mod I will represent only the Plebe class, Merchant class and emotions of the troops under various commands. (Note this does not mean the troops will act independently, it simply means I will tell Generals whether their troops are mutinous, content or loyal.) Also as mod I will represent the other powers around Rome, such as Carthage, Etruscans, Greeks, etc... as well as providing certain scenarios from time to time for the Senate to debate, such as a Messenger arriving from an NPC General or Governor stating he needs reinforcements or money.

The players will be responsible in choosing the 2 Consuls, providing budgets for the various departments, such as Military, Public, etc. The players should they be Generals, Consuls or Governors will have greater power and can flesh out their own individual commands, Generals can go to war, under a Consul (or go Rogue), Consuls can negotiate treaties with other powers and command armies, and Governors can build cities and recruit troops.

This is where I am trying to make all systems work together, Generals or Consuls desiring reinforcements must first authorize it from the Senate, who appropriates the funds. A Messenger then goes to a local Governor asking him to raise a Legion or 2 worth of troops via recruitment campaigns. With this done, the Governor then informs the Senate the Legions are formed and ready to march, the Senate then issues the orders for these Legions to march to X location and join the command of the General/Consul originating all this. As the NES progresses the rules will change and the Senate may see less of a role in forming new legions. Of course Legions are not the only thing the Senate needs to authorize, they must also authorize a city for a Triumph arch or coliseum and order a General or Consul to detach a legion to assist in building certain buildings.

Stats will be for the most part up to the players to maintain and will look as follows:
Family Name/player
Head of Family:
Matron (Head of Family, Female (generally Wife):
Children:
Adopted Members: (Brothers, Cousins, or even a soldier in your Legion.)
Wealth: (Will go by Sestertes)
Prestige: (Lists offices held and current office.) This will currently be empty at beginning of NES.
Power: (Lists Legions under family command, if no Legions, private security force will be listed, or are Governor, will list Provincial troops instead.) Likewise will be empty at beginning of NES.

Rather than placing age next to members, put years of birth, makes it easier to maintain and follow. No more changing ages every year.

Let me know if there are any interests or if anyone feels there is anything that could be added or changed.

Looks quite good - I would like that (however illogical), all the various players be considered Senators (though obviously they couldn't vote unless they were in Rome). Also, their various positions would be outside of Rome, but they could leave a lieutenant in charge. This would make players balance the freedom of action they get outside Rome with the power they get from being in Rome and being able to vote.

I wonder. If a person is a Senator AND a Consul/General/Governer, does he still get a Senate vote?

I guess that could be the price of rising from the ranks of normal Senator, at least until some form of Tribune gets instituted. (pretty sure a Tribune can be multiple things)

Also, I like the fact that something as simple of reinforcements need to go through multiple hands. Maybe you should mandate that someone post at every step if a player is responsible, so certain Senators can get reputations of being lazy or prompt in their reaction to ongoing events. Meanwhile, if someone delays without declaring a temporary replacement (human goes AWOL, character gets sick without replacement) they can get a bad reputation.

EDIT: It feels like we are going through a RP/FamilyNES phrase atm.
