New NESes, ideas, development, etc

Moderator Action: Double post deleted.

As I drove home today I had an idea about updates for BirdNES and realized that it would be applicable for all games.

How difficult would it be to have the update as a posted map that when you moused over nations or places, a text box opened and told the story of that place nation? Maybe colored dots on the map would indicate places to find the stories. So if a dot was in the mid Atlantic, a box would open and tell about a voyage of discovery; etc. A battle along the Rhine would be marked by an X or dot and the pop up would provide the results.

Would such a thing be difficult to create? Would it work in these forums or need a separate site? Could a map template be built so a web design dummy like me could create one? Is special software required? Are there limits to how much text could be put in as pop ups?

Is it a good idea? Could it replace the traditional update or is it better as an adjunct to what we do now? What do you all think?

What has happened to this idea? I think it's fantastic and wondered if anyone had any ideas.

Abaddon, I suggest you put that in spoilers, seeing as how it is a massive post.

Also, how about we take this End of Empires related discussion to WWW or the actual End of Empires thread?

Double posts with huge text inside are evil...
Northen Wolf, I think your ruleset is interesting, except the part about different kinds of treaties: Pacts and deals shouldn't need to be categorized, and backstabbing is fun. Too binding and limiting in my opinion.

Nothing ATM, but I learned enough to know that I need to investigate image mapping and Gimp supports that. The second problem is that if such a map were creatred, where could it be posted? I'm not sure that CFC supports that function in threads. Right now though, I'm trying not too be distracted too badly from the update of BirdNES 3 by side issues I cannot really pursue right now anyway.

Guys, who wants to play a game with simple rules a la Daftpanzerpwnage without the Secret Awesome Sauce he makes?

I am open for ideas for such a game!

If you can give me some info on how to pursue it, I'm really intrigued and will try to follow-up well.

You create a map. Then using "image map" in a program like Gimp, you locate where you want the pop ups when moused over. That is what I know so far. I believe that the pop up texts are created in word and dropped in in some fashion. Google is your friend in this. :)

Has a point, but I still want some penalty if you backstab. Sure, it IS fun, but some penalties should be in there :)

Essentially I think it needs a lot cut from it. Not because they are bad ideas, but because if it takes this long to explain, how many are going to get involved and understand,

Guess you're right about simplifying rules.

and also will you be capable of modding it?
I don't think I'd be good enough mod for NES, my English is far too poor :(

The double post was to get the discussion onto this page..

Anyway. Your english is certainly good enough. Think of it as an exercise teaching you better english!

Takes a while to "fix" and improve these rules :P Maybe a week or so, despite I have plenty of time (some people know why). Still, I don't think I could run this thing, without anyones assistance at least.

But I'll just blow some of my free time into thinking these rules through and If I come up with anything decent I'll let you guys(and gals) know.

Ok apparently without a program, image maps are highly labor intensive. Thus, we need a good program.

Gimp is free and apparently has the capability. There is even a tutorial in the help section of the website.

I am continuing to work on finding info for image maps but I find something that might work just as well-- Pin drops on google earth. It's sort of the same thing and super easy/
EDIT : I just downloaded and installed gimp. After 30 minutes of going through the online user manual, I found image mapping. I found it in the client, and am now struggling with how to use it :p.

"Pin drops" on googe earth? I will take a look once I get through my update. Thanks.

You can place 'pins' on Google Earth- though I wasn't aware that you could share those pins online.

Rough Rule Set for my Civil War Commander NES...

Each player will assume command of a General for either the Union or the Rebels (Patriots), with the possibility of commanding a cavalry force in the Western Frontier. Please note that if you are a commander of either Union or Rebel forces, you cannot command a cavalry force in the West. (Especially true for the Rebel Commanders)

Stats will be detailed as follows:
Character Name:
Rank:
Commanders under his command:
Units under his direct command:
Unit 1:
Unit 2:
ETC....

Character Name is the name of your character, this can be fictional or historical. But I want the name to be true to the culture of your region. Also a brief background would be appreciated if it is fictional so I can see what kind of history this character has and how he got to such a high rank.

Rank is the rank of your character, all characters will be Generals, but only one will be a Supreme commander for their respective armies. If you are a General in the Western Frontier, you answer to the Commander of all Union armies. Some ranks are as follows:
Brigadier General
Lieutenant General
Major General
ETC....

Commanders under your command basically shows who you have under your immediate command, if you are a Supreme Commander, this will show all commanders fighting for your army. Otherwise, you could be in charge of a specific region, such as the Mississippi River and have 1 or 2 other Generals in the same region, usually the General with the higher rank will assume command, but the Supreme Commander has complete authority over his appointments. So you do not want to get on his bad side if you are one of those few.

Units are the divisions or Brigades you have under your command, these will be extremely detailed and will show you morale, accuracy, weapon, experience, numbers, and many other details. A commander is always welcome to PM me if he desires more info that is not covered in the initial description. A sample Unit stat will look similar to this:
New York 15th Regiment (Union)
550 men
Springfield (35 rounds per man)
Seasoned troops
High Morale
(if this regiment is known for their crack shots, this regiment would have the Sharpshooters, otherwise, it will be left blank)
Currently on the march from Washington to Manassas Gap.

Updates will occur as soon as the Supreme commanders and the majority of their subordinates get their orders in. Once two commanders engage, I will focus on the hotspot and expect only the two General's orders, and none other. (unless a reinforcing unit is not far, then that unit commander should send a PM to me informing me that they will send reinforcements.)

This is the rough basis, if there is more support the rules will be more refined and filled out. Please, if you think I forgot something let me know.

I have 5 or 6 Interested players.... if I can get at least 8 I will open this up, please comment if you think it needs some changes, thanks.

I'll join it as the so-called Rebels.

As long as there aren't a gross unbalance of northern or southern forces.

I'll Join where ever there is Cavalry!

I am going with 4-5 evenly on both sides, then open up the Frontier for those who would rather fight Indians on horseback.

I think I have enough players that I will go ahead and start it.... the rule set is finalized and after looking through EQ's old NES "A House Divided" I found some other stuff I would like included.

Expect it up in about 1 hour.
