As I drove home today I had an idea about updates for BirdNES and realized that it would be applicable for all games.
How difficult would it be to have the update as a posted map that when you moused over nations or places, a text box opened and told the story of that place nation? Maybe colored dots on the map would indicate places to find the stories. So if a dot was in the mid Atlantic, a box would open and tell about a voyage of discovery; etc. A battle along the Rhine would be marked by an X or dot and the pop up would provide the results.
Would such a thing be difficult to create? Would it work in these forums or need a separate site? Could a map template be built so a web design dummy like me could create one? Is special software required? Are there limits to how much text could be put in as pop ups?
Is it a good idea? Could it replace the traditional update or is it better as an adjunct to what we do now? What do you all think?
Nothing ATM, but I learned enough to know that I need to investigate image mapping and Gimp supports that. The second problem is that if such a map were creatred, where could it be posted? I'm not sure that CFC supports that function in threads. Right now though, I'm trying not too be distracted too badly from the update of BirdNES 3 by side issues I cannot really pursue right now anyway. What has happened to this idea? I think it's fantastic and wondered if anyone had any ideas.

You create a map. Then using "image map" in a program like Gimp, you locate where you want the pop ups when moused over. That is what I know so far. I believe that the pop up texts are created in word and dropped in in some fashion. Google is your friend in this.If you can give me some info on how to pursue it, I'm really intrigued and will try to follow-up well.
Double posts with huge text inside are evil...
Northen Wolf, I think your ruleset is interesting, except the part about different kinds of treaties: Pacts and deals shouldn't need to be categorized, and backstabbing is fun. Too binding and limiting in my opinion.

I don't think I'd be good enough mod for NES, my English is far too poorAbaddon said:and also will you be capable of modding it?
The double post was to get the discussion onto this page..
Anyway. Your english is certainly good enough. Think of it as an exercise teaching you better english!
Ok apparently without a program, image maps are highly labor intensive. Gimp is free and apparently has the capability. There is even a tutorial in the help section of the website.Ok apparently without a program, image maps are highly labor intensive. Thus, we need a good program.

"Pin drops" on googe earth? I will take a look once I get through my update. Thanks.I am continuing to work on finding info for image maps but I find something that might work just as well-- Pin drops on google earth. It's sort of the same thing and super easy/
EDIT : I just downloaded and installed gimp. After 30 minutes of going through the online user manual, I found image mapping. I found it in the client, and am now struggling with how to use it.
