Orthanc's Creation Thread

HunterAnubis, ever heard of Sid Meier's Pirates? If you haven't noticed, it's by the same guy who made Civ3, and is an uber game. I have it, and thus access to images and models from it, and it has quite the ship selection of it's own. But anyways, I'd have to convert models (if that's even possible) in order to use them in POV Ray, which I've never tried and I really doubt it'd be easy to work with, so instead I just look at images of models and make my own based on them.

Now I doubt he'd do this (due to insane busy-ness I'm sure), but aaglo could probably very easily re-create his Black Pearl without the rips in the sails. If I remember correctly, the rips are just a texture, which wouldn't be very difficult to alter. That's your best bet for getting a non-ghosty Black Pearl within the next few months/year, though I must say, I really like aaglo's Pearl the way it is. Please don't poke him too much!

Yeah I'm going with the triple decker, that way when I'm remaking the Man O War and Frigate, I can have the Man O War have two decks, the Frigate just one, giving us a sensible order of power, maybe something like this:

Sloop-Galleon-Privateer-Corvette-Frigate-Man O War-Ship of the Line-Trident

My evil plan is working:mischief: :D

But anyone who has played Pirates! can tell you that the Sloop is undefeatable. ;) They run rings round any heavier type of vessel. So the order would be:

Galleon-Privateer-Corvette-Frigate-Man O War-Ship of the Line-Trident-Sloop

Stormy, that is the most nautical peice of technology I have ever seen.
:twitch:

And Keroro does raise a good point, in Pirates, once I'm in a fully upgraded Royal Sloop (or anyone that knows how to play really) I'm untouchable, Matrix style. It's hopelessly unrealistic, but the ship turns on a dime and the enemy broadside, no matter how large, is suddenly headed for open sea.

Yeah, I love Sloops too, that's why it was my first unit, which I redid twice afterwards:D .

Anywho, here's what's in the yards (yes literally now!):

Great! That model of the hull-only is very valuable, the Carrack's going to be fun! (As will Ship of the Line before it).

Its all the same ship, from what I understand from your reply, looks like you think they are different ships.

And I'm guessing this reply was for me:rolleyes:, if wasn't ignore this one.:p

This was the ship that Pedro Alvarez Cabral, and his man used to find their way to India, but they end up discovering what is today Brazil.

I think he means that the ship you posted was a Carrack and the ship he is doing before that ship is the SoTL, the "before" in his post refering not to the pic psoted but the actual unit.

I think.

:crazyeye: Too much thinking! Quinzy's got it, I know all the pictures you posted cometflash, based on their design, were of Carracks, the 'before' is in fact referring to the fact that I'm making the Ship of the Line before I get to the Carrack.

Now that that's no longer clear as mud, back to the yard with ye... me.

Not your fault, just me and my English understanding (which isn't great).

Quinzy got it right away, (but I still need your reply, as Quinzy didn't sound so sure:D).

Just a quick question but whats the difference between a Man O' War and a Ship of the Line? The Civ3 Civilopedia says I believe that the Man O' War is a kind of Ship of the Line? Is this untrue and is the Man O War another class entirely? Just curious?

Great work so far Orthanc. Love the dockyard style preview..

*puttering of fingers as he goes to wikipedia*

I thought so, Man of War can really be any primarily sailing warship armed with cannons. I think the limits are mainly that it be a national vessel (as opposed to private, pirate, or privateer) and have more than 20 cannons (20 is considered a 6th rate ship, quite weak). So yes, technically a Sloop, Galleon, Frigate and Ship of the Line can all be heaped under the term Man of War, but I'll lend Civ 3 some nautical slack and pretend it's a ship between Frigate and Ship of the Line.:D

Speaking of which:

This is being heavily modelled after the HMS Victory. The old red lines are goldish now, but just for the previews, cause I really like that color. Just finished the stern (complicated!), and I have Pirates 3 soundtrack stuck in my mind:twitch:
