Random Rants 94 I rant at the thread title and shake my fist menacingly.

Had to change my bike tire today. Shimano makes its parts needlessly complicated.

Should have to just tighten the thing. Instead you're noting precise orders so as to keep the disc brake from friction, moving the derailleur, wiggling the tire in, fiddling around, and a whole bunch of other considerations for what should mechanically be simple.

I'm convinced that the inconvenience is to "motivate" people to buy new bikes. Like planned obsolescence.

There is a gambling website where you can play casino style games with Robux, which are designed for kids.

Got double vaxxed yesterday and it's been a time. The bus I was meant to take there disappeared from the scanner two minutes before it was meant to arrive, so I had to quickly walk to the pharmacy instead. Then on the way back the driver wouldn't let me off until two stops past where I needed to get off.

I also took the time to finally pay for a new prescription while there, and the pharmacist could not answer either of my questions and also did not know basic medical facts, which is both worrisome and annoying because my doctor told me to ask the pharmacist for best practices/more information. So now I am just winging it.

The reaction to the vaccinations has been nonideal so far. The lady gave me the option between Pfizer and Moderna and I simply shrugged. I should have picked Moderna. I've always had less of a reaction to that one. Lots of sinus pressure, headache, couldn't sleep. Feeling fresh as a daisy! Not as bad as my first couple jabs, but it's up there.

Some years ago, the local Tube added electronic billboards that announce when the next few trains are coming in. A couple of days ago I was happy that the next train was only two minutes away and then it went up to three. (facepalm)

I have 3 clocks and a watch to change from DST to MST. I hate this.

Plus I have a cold.

I had to do 8 clocks. I would have had to do my watch as well, but I switched to a different watch over that weekend so had to wind it and set it anyway, so I'm not counting that.

I've got the two alarm clocks changed. Still have to do the watch and wall clock.

The ancient wisdoms of humanity will offer one no consolation nor perspective should one drop his cellphone in a port-a-john.

This didn't actually happen to me, but I did come danger close.

It occurred to me after; if I had dropped it in, would I have picked it up? You'd have to do it immediately to maximize chances of salvation. Is it worth it? I decided such a question is best not pondered as I closed the door behind me.

The little kids who otherwise have to walk home from school in the dark in Duluth will thank you and the rest of America.
Keep DST great again.

It's a fact of life that the closer you get to either the North Pole or the South Pole, the greater the certainty that you'll spend part of your normal day in the dark. When I was in college, I had early morning classes and some afternoon classes didn't let out until 4 or 5 pm. In December at this latitude, it gets dark at 4 pm. In the morning, the Sun wasn't anywhere close to up when I left for classes. So I spent the daylight hours inside, going to class, or in the library, or with study groups. It's only 6 pm here and has been dark for some time now.

"The glass is already broken"

"All things within this fading world have end"

Grip it and rip it.

"The glass is already broken"

"All things within this fading world have end"
Bah.

Perspective is overrated anyway.

Ascetism is just cynicism rearranged. Mastery of pain is undesirable. We are here. I relish triumphs and despair defeats. In this manner, I embrace the incentives to be good at everything I do and frequently end up skilled in many arenas.

I've seen what the cynical ascetic end up as. Bitter recluses, checked out, unimpactful, underperforming wage serfs without any realistic hope of change.

But this is all said in the spirit of ranting. Of course.

Can someone enlighten me please, what is the dating etiquette for 40-50 year olds?

I met someone online, we started texting, and after few days the lady in question started to flirt with me and I found it beyond gross. She has not even met me in real life once!

I thought that we would go to a restaurant, a concert, bird-watching, maybe theater and only then, if we both found
each other's presence heartwarming, we may start complimenting each other.

She says she has just came back from Ireland after living there for 15 years. So I doubt it's me, it could be that dating culture over there is different compared
to post - USSR Latvia.

Could it be that I'm old fashioned?

ps.
if this rant is too adult. feel free to delete.

I would say yes, you're old-fashioned, at least by "liberated" standards. Depending on the culture and circumstance, flirting may start before you even have a substantial conversation. But I also wouldn't say your approach is incorrect; there are other people who feel similarly as you, even in places that are less focused on etiquette and process.

I'd interrogate why your reaction is that it's gross though. Since you prefer to wait, this indicates that you aren't inherently opposed to that behaviour; it's just the timing that's off. Disgust feels misplaced when it's really a question of mismatched expectations.

I found it gross, because to me it shows lack of class. I'm looking for a creative type of woman, but she could be a scientist as well. Someone who is disciplined in both
professional area and human interactions. Sure, someone can be lonely, but you have to control yourself and restrain yourself even if the person you communicate with seems perfect for you.

I remember when I had my first date with my passed wife, she had this very cozy jumper which was hand knitted with ornaments. It looked so fluffy as if it was a huge cat. Of course I wanted to touch it, but I
knew that it is was way too early. After five or so dates we hugged for the first time and I could touch it finally, and yes, the jumper was knitted by her mom and was full of love and coziness.

For a gentleman and lady i find such things common sense.

Oh, joy. What PERFECT timing.

Canada's having a postal strike! Whee!!!

Now if PP succeeds in toppling the government, it's very possible that Canada Post would refuse to deliver VICs and mail-in ballots. Guess I'd better see if I've still got any old utility bills (I use those for ID).

There are going to be a LOT of irate people if this is still going on by Black Friday (yes, that's a thing in Canada as well, now).

Whole thing was weird. The age of the megastar is dead, microstars it is. But yeah, they're putting them in the ring at 58 before the last big ones fade. No idea who the kid is. Don't care either, won't learn his name.
