Random Rants 94 I rant at the thread title and shake my fist menacingly.

Rant? Rant?!... okay, rant.
Thunder is thunder usually but this morning I was waken up at 6 AM by very very near striking lightning (maybe just 1 second "away" - I always measure distance in time with lightning/thunder delay) that literally got my heart beating fast. One of few downsides of keeping window tilted couple degrees down through night all the time.

There was this board game that I had been eyeing for a while at a local online retailer. They've only had one copy for months but I never went ahead and bought it.

Today I decided to buy it. And it was out of stock. Gahhh!!!!! And no, nowhere else in NZ sells it.

The board game was In the Year of the Dragon. It's a punishing game of cutting your losses...

I took my car into the mechanic for repairs and when I came to pick it up this morning the window was smashed and the radio was gone. The car was parked in the mechanic's outside parking lot so somebody must have just walked by sometime during the night and thought my car was an easy target. I don't see any other damage or anything else missing. All the other cars in the parking lot looked fine. I had the police come check everything out and file a report. There are security cameras nearby so maybe they can figure out who it was from that. My car is cleaned up best it can be but the mechanic didn't have anything to cover the window with so it's currently exposed to the elements. I'll have to go out and buy some clear plastic to put up in the meantime. They said I should file an insurance claim before any repairs are done so that payment can be figured out. I filed the claim but haven't been contacted with estimates or requests for more info yet. I was supposed to go an a trip this weekend but I'm not sure I want to drive 300 miles without a window.

Spoiler Pics or it didn't happen :

Sucks ass man sorry to hear it. You might have a cause of action against the mechanic if their lot wasn't reasonably secured against thieves.

When in doubt, better call Saul!

How to win friends and influence people? Sue everybody!

Sorry about your car @BenitoChavez . :(

Damn thieves

First I said I would toast Betty White's 100th birthday.

Then I said I would celebrate Prince Phillip's 100th birthday.

After they both died at 99, I swore off ever mentioning a 100th birthday out loud.

Yesterday I said "Bob Barker is still alive? Wow, 99. I hope he makes it to 100."

You should have stopped at Prince Phillip.

Definitely don't mention William Shatner in another 9 years, 'k?

We need a "Random Rage" thread. Sometimes "rant" is just too mild.

This appeared in the feed for my local newspaper:

article said:

Red Deer school board trustee compares 2SLGBTQIA+ community to Nazis

‘We deeply regret any distress that the comments may have caused’: Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools

A local school board trustee compared the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to Nazis in a social media post this week.

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools board of trustees member Monique LaGrange recently published a story on her personal Instagram page featuring two pictures – one of children waving Nazi flags and another of children waving Pride flags – with the caption, “Brainwashing is brainwashing.”

“It’s disappointing to see Ms. LaGrange resort to such lazy tactics to appeal to conservative-minded folks like her,” chairperson of the board for the Red Deer Queer Community Association Alex Pugatschew said in a statement on Friday.

“Comparisons like this are not only unproductive but also disrespectful to a community of people who have been historically and are currently targeted by the very fascists she so openly compares us to.”

Pugatschew said many Albertans value diversity and embrace everyone, regardless of their orientation or presentation.

“This is what makes our communities stronger, and we at the Red Deer Queer Community Association have witnessed this firsthand. Not everyone may share this sentiment, but the fact is, that inclusivity and love for all are crucial for building a better world,” said Pugatschew.

“The Red Deer Queer Community Association acknowledges that Ms. LaGrange’s Instagram story was intended to incite animosity and conflict between individuals with opposing political beliefs. We are aware that such tactics are often employed to divert attention from important issues.”

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools issued a statement in response to LaGrange’s social media post.

“The content of the (Instagram) story does not align with the principles and values that guide our division, and trustee LaGrange does not speak on behalf of the board,” the statement said.

“Our division is committed to fostering learning environments that are inclusive, respectful and considerate of all members of our schools and community. We deeply regret any distress that the comments may have caused.

“In response to learning about this matter, we immediately engaged our Trustee Code of Conduct. According to the code, issues can be handled through a conciliatory approach if all parties are agreeable. In this instance, trustee LaGrange removed the social media post from her …page as requested by the board.”

LaGrange, who is one of five trustees representing the Red Deer area, received2,546 votes in the 2021 municipal election.

The Advocate emailed LaGrange to ask for an interview or statement, but did not receive an immediate response.
Source.

This is absolutely mindcroggling. This woman is related somehow to my MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly), Adriana LaGrange; I think she's a sister-in-law, but am not sure. She ran for the Catholic school board in the last municipal elections and won a seat, partly because there were not enough of us in the anti-curriculum FB group to cover the Catholic school boards (our goal was to get anti-daft curriculum candidates elected, and we knew this one would have been all in favor of her family member's abominable mess of a curriculum).

The actual post was removed, but even so... this is hate speech. It's also not going to do LaGrange the MLA any political favors, or at least not the kind that should matter. She used to be the Minister of (Gutting Public) Education, and now she's the Minister of (Gutting Public) Health (just to make it clear what the real goal is in this pack of sociopaths that pretends to be a legitimate provincial government). The rational, sane people will call for her immediate resignation/firing. The BS!C people will hail her as a hero.

Btw, note the weasel words by the school board. 'May have' never appears in an honest apology.

Had a 1hr 37min convo with someone who went to the same crazy boarding school as me to put on YouTube but the sound wasn't recording so yeah...

Chill lady tho & it was a good conversation regardless, was a shame it wasn't captured tho. Call it a rough draft, we'll try again over the next few days.

Well that six.
I thought ripping put the 'radio ' went out of fashion some time ago since they were a lot harder to get put now.

so apparently when you get your name changed, it’s not sufficient to register the change with the social security office and your banks/credit providers. You also have to do so with the credit reporting agencies.

just a little hot tip for any American girlies thinking of getting their name changed

anyway my credit is borked now

Wow. You have credit rating agencies.

An new way to describe bigs: The Uk air traffic control system when down because of a bug during one of the busiest holiday weekends of the year. From the reporting it is a classic "using a label as an identifier" mistakes that most software developers have been exposed to at one point or another. It fell over after 5 years or 15 million records, until we got one where the labels happened to match over the UK. To make it sound more like "extreme unlucky" rather than "public sector IT system developed by one of two consultant companies is a bug ridden mess like every other one" the bbc is describing this as a 'one in 15 million' event.

Spoiler Air traffic chaos caused by 'one in 15 million' event - BBC News :
The UK's air traffic control system was brought down in a "one in 15 million" event, the head of National Air Traffic Services (Nats) said on Wednesday.

In its initial report published on Wednesday, Nats said that at 08:32 on 28 August, its system received details of a flight which was due to cross UK airspace later that day.

Airlines submit every flight path to the national control centre; these should automatically be shared with Nats controllers, who oversee UK airspace.

The system detected that two markers along the planned route had the same name - even though they were in different places. As a result, it could not understand the UK portion of the flight plan.

This triggered the system to automatically stop working for safety reasons, so that no incorrect information was passed to Nats' air traffic controllers. The backup system then did the same thing.

This unfolded in just 20 seconds.

Man, and it is not like these clashes are rare:

Out of the 124,215 codes, there are 119,973 unique ones (only used once) and there are in total 4,242 ones that are used more than once. The highest number of uses has the code ALPHA with 9 total uses worldwide.

Usually, intersections with the same code are far away from one another to avoid confusion. There are however some quite close re-uses. I searched through my database to find the closest two intersections using the same code and came up with two SIERAs used in Belgium, which are only 18.5 NM away from one another. They are VFR waypoints:
