Random Rants 94 I rant at the thread title and shake my fist menacingly.

Interwevbs connection is currently about the speed of a 33.6k modem...........
edit: Did i say 33.6k? I meant 2.4k. I am alternating between 1 bar and 0 bar internet strength.

Freaking Steam. It used to work until last night, when it forced me to download an update that broke it. :badcomp:
Oh hey, Steam's destroyed itself entirely. Thanks, Valve. You've nixed yourself admirably.

(Mike Myers + Dana Carvey voice) NOT!

Went looking for a wool overcoat worn by Tom Burke in an episode of C.B. Strike.

£890 (~$1100)

Whiskey tango foxtrot. Does it come with drugs sewn into the lining or something? :shake:

I've no idea what that show is, but if it isn't modern, might a hunting expedition to the thrift shops work?

That's where I do most of my shopping, yeah.

I am dizzy from the sheer amount of smoke in the air. Forest fires are back on the menu, boys.

Forest fires are back? But we’re just getting started with hurricanes visiting the east coast. 🫠

Ooh. Ooh, ooh, ooh.

Spotify just sent me an early access code to buy Chelsea Wolfe tickets for next March, downtown.

March is ridiculously far away, but I have no idea how quickly these are likely to sell out. I don't think I know anybody who's into her, and I don't mind going to concerts alone, but should I buy 2 anyway, just in case? Hmm...

*Sigh*

I suppose nothing is ever easy, is it? With all of the fees and whatnot, the tickets are close to $50. There's a 'service' fee and a 'handling' fee and an additional fee to get paper tickets instead of using their app of choice. Has anyone here ever used AXS Tickets? I'm not averse to doing things electronically, but a quick Googling doesn't return promising reviews (although I suppose I have to adjust for the fact that most of the people who never had a problem probably don't post about it).

Welcome to "overpriced concert tickets USA".

And $50 might not be so bad.

L.A. Times said:
Oliver Anthony shot to stardom scorching the rich with his controversial working-class ballad “Rich Men North of Richmond.” Naturally, he wants to make sure his fans don’t have to be rich to watch him play.
L.A. Times said:
Anthony had been booked to play Sept. 27 at Cotton Eyed Joe, a popular country music venue in Knoxville, Tenn. However, when the Virginia native on Monday caught wind of how much the tickets cost — $90 to $200 — he angrily pulled over to the side of the road with his “adrenaline pumping” and recorded a message to his fans, warning them not to buy the tickets.

“Don’t buy Cotton Eye Joe tickets for $99 a piece, and sure as hell don’t buy VIP passes for whatever b— price they’re on,” he said in the video posted to his Instagram as cars zoomed by. “That’s horse— ... I didn’t agree to it, and I don’t want you to pay it.”

Within hours, the show had been canceled.
I recall, back in the day, there was a punk band called Fugazi that insisted all their shows be inexpensive and all-ages (therefore, no booze sales).

I dunno about the US, but here in the UK, I usually pay in the range £25-50 for tickets to gigs, depending on the band/venue. I have paid more, around £100, for big name artists (Springsteen, Iron Maiden etc.), but I won't do those prices often.

Yeah, that's about where I'm at too. Come to think of it, I don't know if I've ever paid even $100 (~£81, atm), but I've never been to see any of the giant names. I went to see Lollapalooza in the early '90s, at an outdoor place, but a small one, not a stadium. I can't remember how much that ticket was. Could that have been $50? $50 in 1991 would be ~$112/£91 today. But that was for a day-long concert with several bands, none of whom would've played a big venue by themselves. I get the feeling that live entertainment prices in general - concerts, stage plays, sports - are higher today than just adjusting for inflation, but maybe that's just me looking back with rose-colored glasses.

...
Speaking of "advancements", the local Wal-Greens got the bright idea to put screens on front of all the freezers to display all the items.

Maybe change the prices from headquarters 1000 miles away too?
Who knows.

It is kind of nice, but is it really an improvement over clear see-through glass?

So there is way more to this story than I thought.

The old CEO started a company with a friend to sell these freezer screens to WalGreens, but the new CEO cancelled the deal.

$200 million lawsuit.

The most expensive concert ticket I ever bought was for the Irish Rovers, plus merchandise (they were selling records and videos). It was still under $50.

Mind you, that was back in 1993. Up to that point I had to think a good long while before putting out $12 for a Shakespeare play, and I don't remember how much the symphony cost me, the only time I went to that (was worth it, though). At the time I went to the play, I was babysitting and working in the school library, so $12 wasn't a small amount of money for me.

I did get to see a lot of plays for free, though - by getting on the list of volunteers to do front of house duties. The deal is if you do tickets, programs, ushering, or coat check, you get to see the show for free - assuming there's a spare seat. I got the local SCA into this a couple of times, for Macbeth (not saying it out loud, so the curse doesn't count) and Man of La Mancha. We did front of house in costume on opening night and got to see the show for free.

It was a bit unfair to the audience, though. The local reporter who covered opening night included us in her writeup, saying "there were even costumed ushers". The 2nd night audience probably wondered where the costumed ushers were and would have to be told that we were only there for the one night.

I can't fathom paying hundreds for tickets, or even any number of tens over about 30 at most. It's like theatre tickets for movies. It's all going to be on TV or YouTube some day, so I can wait.

I woke up at 4:55am today, for no good reason. Somehow I was aware my eyes were closed, forced them open, felt terrible and couldn't close my eyes for ten minutes while my eyes reacted somehow to opening so soon, kept awake until 7am. I tried to sleep until 9am, and it kind of worked, but it really didn't.

Then I learned today reverts from daylight savings time – I lost three hours of sleep, not two hours of sleep. What a beautiful morning...

According to Youtube, i have a 16kbps internet connection.

omfg, I am so tired of hearing about Taylor [flipping] Swift. Half the podcasts I listen to have mentioned her lately, and I don't even listen to any pop music podcasts. This morning [freakin'] NPR mentioned that she went to a football game yesterday. wtaf?

Not incidentally, I heard one of her songs, once. It was [poo]. Almost unlistenable. I was in a Dunkin' Donuts, and the song made standing in line even more aggravating. I only knew it was her because the dj said it was. Anyway, that was like 2 years ago, and I didn't think anything of it after that. Popular music frequently blows, being the derivative, lowest common denominator that it is, but some of it's good, and I don't begrudge anyone their music or their fun. We need more, not less. Let your freak normie flag fly. But it's getting out of hand, now. I'm hearing or reading about her on a near-daily basis. I don't give a [fig] who she's dating.

Someone on TrekBBS started a thread for Star Trek poetry (as in we're supposed to come up with some). One guy started posting rap lyrics, and told me to imagine Snoop Dogg's voice when I read it.

I hadn't even heard his voice before, and now that I have, I wish very much to never hear it again.

I did contribute a small poem, though. It would be classified as a filk if the source material (a nursery rhyme) was set to music.

Ah yes, kids and their music.... In the 60s it was the British invasion groups that dominated the headlines and whose every antic was headline worthy. Before that Elvis tried, but the more limited media crimped his public profile a bit.
