Selenites Pack

Now this pack looks more than complete :goodjob: It's been a while since a complete civ has been made so fast and so nicely. From now on, I will use the word "Sir" (or "your majesty") when adressing to Supa :D

Thanks!

Well, thank you, that was my main goal since Day One, accessing to Civ Royalty! ;)

A subsidiary goal was to make the Selenites a more interesting race to play in the various Steampunk scenarii. I'm still planing to make a few more Selenite units but I'll first switch to other projects.

More interesting indeed! I caught up with the second pack last night and it set me off onto a new round of terrain modding, of all things, so that the terrain would match the units! That liddle Administrator fella will be everyone's favorite alien, I predict. And the Founding Mother Selenite is a creative tour de force! While the Regulator is appropriately menacing, the Sniper is almost suave - my brother & I had some fun last night imagining it introducing itself as, "Bug, James Bug." Giving it the alternate animations gave me the ability to put it into two slots - the better to fill up the unit line. And I have to say, knowing that they're also faithful to Well's original vision is very very tasty icing on the cake. Now for another screenshot, with the new terrain & coloration:

Thank you, Balthasar!

As I've said, it's always nice to see your own units in a gameplay screenshot! The new terrain looks good, perhaps a tad too brown ? With the jpg compression, I'm unable to distinguish the unit next to the spaceship, what it is ?

I see there is gold on the Moon! Great, in First Men.., it was said that gold is as abundant on the Moon as wood is on the Earth.

And I have to say, knowing that they're also faithful to Well's original vision is very very tasty icing on the cake.

That's part of the fun, trying to be as faithful as I can be with the resources available.

A little off-topic, but I've been meaning to ask you: Is there a reason why H.G. Wells martians don't seem to be in the Lost World scenario ?

Thanks for filling out the unit line Supa

Spoiler :
That unit would be an "astronaut" or more specifically Dr. Cavor - Balthasar will confirm. No HG Wells martians because Balthasar took his cue from Edgar Rice Burroughs.

@Balthasar Must admit I think the terrain is a bit too brown as well - liked it better before.

That's Moon Brown, custom mixed from my memory of the Apollo 17 landscape. The portion of the moon seen in the Lost Worlds Mod is the terminus, which is in eternal twilight. It's the only place on the moon that's not either too hot or too cold to live on. That's my story & I'm stikkin' to it.

With the jpg compression, I'm unable to distinguish the unit next to the spaceship, what it is ?

It's a Universal Mining Robot made by Tom2050. I call it Dr. Cavor, with the back story that he builds the battlesuit in order to help the Selenites. I needed a powerful unit late in the game.

Well I keep trying to put them in, and they keep getting bounced out. They don't match any of Burroughs' martian units, and now they don't match any moon units either.

As I was putting your units into the Mod, I had to make units_32 files for them, so I thought I'd upload them & save everyone work...

Nice idea.

Well, why not "simply" put an additional civilization on the Martian ground ? An ancient martian race being dislodged by stronger, newer races and tenderly looking at the Earth and its seemingly weaker inhabitants. They may have fewer Mars bases and a slight head-start at space-traveling.

I don't know if H.G. Wells' Martians got a proper name in a sequel or another to separate them from other Martians species. Just an idea.

I don't have any problem mixing Wells' Mars and Burroughs' Barsoom. In fact, it was already the basis of the short story Mars: The Home Front by George Alec Effinger, published in 1996 in War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches. I haven't read this story yet: I first want to read Burroughs' Barsoom stories. Yes, I'm that kind of guy. ^^

Thanks! I never take the time to do unit_32 files.

There's the Sceptre & Orbs scenario. On that note makers of "authentic" creations might want to take a look at Edison's Conquest of Mars (1898). It's an unauthorized sequel to War of the Worlds. There is an easily understood audio version at Librivox. A scenario based in a Barsoom map has also been discussed. Definitely room there for more variety of civs.

I realy enjoyed that book, Teddy Roosevelt fighting one of the early scouts in the jungles of Cuba. The section for Samuel Clemmons was very good as well. H.P. Lovecraft meets Martians . Enough said there. Jack London in Alaska. The Dowager Empress.

Then there is the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novels where the league fights the martians in London. Dr. Moreu's germ warefare and Mr. Hyde eats a martian

It's already on my reading-list. I'm actually quite interested by this one - hopefully, I'll get to read it soon.

H.P. Lovecraft meets Martians . Enough said there.

It was fun, with quite a few references to 'later' Lovecraftian texts. I especially liked the bit where the Martians interact with the Fungi from Yuggoth.

"Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us."

Hey bartender! Give me whatever he had!

Don't laugh at me! I know a spell that will make you show your true form. Cave rat taught it to me.

Hey Supa... thanks for wonderful units. But I have a question too.. would it be possible to make couple of versions of Administrator with some weapons and perhaps a grey colour skin texture.Would make a nice classical grey alien units.

what he said :p

I was expecting to see a request like that as soon as I saw the Administrator and imagined dozens of them emerging from a UFO. If you actually were going to do that, you'd want to do the classic variations, because someone will ask for them eventually - grey, grey and taller, and lighter green with a jumpsuit and raygun. Antennae optional. Of course they'd all need hands.

Spoiler :
The similarity between them and Well's creation goes to show the impact that Well's book had on the popular imagination. One the other hand, the tradition of 'green' aliens goes back to well before Wells, even before Verne:

Location. Near Neston England
Date: July 1857
Time: evening
On the outskirts of town a young shepherd named Robert Clancy was tending his flock---and his sweetheart---when he noticed a round gleaming vessel sanding on three legs at the side of a field. A golden haired woman in unusual green clothes stood by the unearthly craft watching Clancy and his girlfriend for a while, then waved and climbed into the vehicle, which afterwards took off into the sky and headed northwards. For months afterwards, no sheep would graze on the spot where the craft had stood.

Date: August 1868

An unspecified number of witnesses watched an enormous sphere of flames land on top of a hill. Two very small occupants, about 1.20m, wearing with greenish luminous clothing exit the sphere and disappear into the woods. No other information.

Most of the 'humanoid sightings' listed from the pre-sci-fi era are either obviously religious or superstitious in nature, and some are just tragic, like the melancholy 'giant' killed by villagers. But, reading through them, there seems to be a change that occurs in the nature of the 'sightings' as the industrial age dawns. These visitors often seem to be stranded, and less supernatural, and more than a few are seen to be siphoning water into their crafts, which are often saucer or cigar shaped. This is decades before the first science fiction was actually written by anyone, if we're to accept the veracity of these accounts (I'd like to know if the originals of any of these accounts exist, for instance). Because, if some of these accounts are to be believed, they suggest time travel more than they do alien contact. Note the modern details in this account:

Location. Harayadori Japan
Date: February 22 1803
Time: unknown
Several villagers and anglers gathered on the beach to see an object, which had appeared on the shore. The object was about 20 feet in diameter, having a Saturn like shape with the upper dome apparently made out of glass, and appeared to have transparent sliding doors. The villagers looked inside the dome and saw some strange lettering and a bottle that appeared to have water inside. A very beautiful young woman was also seen inside the craft. She had pale features and had long shoulder length hair. She stepped out of the object and spoke in an unknown language; she also carried a small box, which she would not let anyone touch. Eventually she went back inside the craft and the villagers pushed it out to sea where it drifted out of sight.

Poor girl. First she couldn't get a signal on her iphone (which also had a lousy translater app), then the villagers push her out to sea. Wonder how that turned out. She's gonna wish she'd brought more than bottled water with her. That's what happens when you take daddy's time machine out for a spin....

It's all terribly off-topic, of course, and truly unfair to Supa, who's already given us these wonderful units. Still, it's just too fun to leave alone without at least speculating about it. Goes to show how good these Selenites really are.

Yes, I was aware the administrator would be a hit. ^^

Grey units are a possibility, although I have no plan for them right now. Also, I'd rather use a proper Grey model.
