The Cool Unbuilt Structures Thread!

Whats its name? any wiki link?

I've yet to find a picture of it, but I know construction began on "The Idol of Fascism" in Italy, the plans called for it to be three times the size of the Statue of Liberty.

That's gotta be BS.

The construction business in Italy is owned by the mob. I wouldnt be surprised.

There's no evidence of that, and the mafia has never been linked with Fascism, always working against it, like Lucky Luciano in WW2.

There is plenty of evidence, just watch a few Italian documentaries regarding the modern day mafia in Italy. They practically own the construction business. And they dont really care about what the symbol might be for as long as it gets them money. Such an ambitious project would certainly cost a hefty sum.

These structures are amazing, but I have to wonder: What do they actually do? Are they commercial space? Residential? Educational? And would it be remotely possible to build them without thoroughly contaminating the environment around them?

That said, trying to build some of these might actually spur research/development of a workable antigrav system... :D

There is no evidence of the mafia linked to Fascism. The mafiosi were working against Fascism, and vice versa.

Fun thread; my money is on perfection in the bet.

Hehe, I remeber a few years ago, I wanted to merge four 'scrapers in Minneapolis, and build up, to make a super-super-tall. :smug:

Anyhoo, less chat, more pics!

The Mafia was essentially driven out of Italy, with only minor reminents in Sicily during the Fascist era, such a large project would be undertaken throught the "corporations" of the Italian syndicalist economy.

I don't have a link, I'll try to find where I read it, but construction was cancelle almost immediately after it started due to the onset of WWII.

I didnt say mafia was linked to facism. I am talking modern day mafia anyway.

There is the problem I thought you were talking about a modern day construction of a facist symbol, not something that happened during WW2 era.

I'll try to figure out how to take some pictures from where I'm sitting on the construction of the 90 story Trump building.

In the meantime, this seems more appropriate in Dubai than Chicago and it makes me dizzy but I like it. The Aqua building which is going up.

Is it just me, or is China building like 10 New Yorks? At least in terms of their physical built forms; it is difficult to replicate the financial importance.

I wouldn't be surprised if more than half of what was posted in this thread was eventually built. (Not including the death star)
And I say that's a load of crock!

As such I propose a wager:

From this list of buildings I wager that no more then one will be completed in the next 10 years.
Russia Tower
Las Vegas Tower
Green Bird
The Chicago Spire
Dubai Towers - Dubai
The Mubarak Al-kabil Tower
Libeskind proposal for St. Petersburg (provided it's over 300m)
Tsui's "Utlima Tower"
The Shenzhen Tower

At the completion of 2 buildings or 10 years the losing party will be made to have a truely concessionary avatar/title/location/sig scheme (or equivalent if site changes format) for no less then 2 months.

Have we a bet?
Count me in ;)

All, right the 10 years starts with this post!
Perfection, bring it on!

Well, it's been 5 years (well 5 years in a couple days), how about an update on the bet:

Russia Tower - status: cancelled
Las Vegas Tower - status: cancelled
Green Bird - status: never became serious proposal
The Chicago Spire - status: cancelled
Dubai Towers - Dubai - status: "on hold" (official sites are dead too)
The Mubarak Al-kabil Tower - status greenlit with scheduled opening in 2016 (according to Wikipedia), but from what I can tell the structure itself hasn't been started
Libeskind proposal for St. Petersburg (provided it's over 300m) - status: cancelled
Tsui's "Utlima Tower" - status: hypothetical proposal
The Shenzhen Tower - status: hypothetical proposal

I think my victory is looking to be extremely probable.

I want to take constructionist, deconstructionist & structuralist architecture and burn it all to the ground.

No one brought up the Tatlin Tower?

I bet the original pic for that is the Singapore skyline. Sure looks like it, with the bridge and buildings changed and fake trees added.

Some examples of those would be nice. Sounds like they would be fringe movements in architecture at best.

Let's get Green. I present Dragon Fly. A 132 story vertical farm and living/work space on Roosevelt Island, NYC.
