TBH no idea.
I could re-sort them, but that'd be a hassle.
This is something I've known about since the first time I ever installed new smileys in an InvisionFree forum. Some people complained that they weren't in alphabetical order, if you could believe that. I considered it a plus if we got the same types of smileys together (the defaults, the forum-dedicated ones - this being a gaming forum we had all sorts of weird stuff, the extra ones people thought would be cool (and a couple of those are ones I've been asking for here for something like 15 years because they are cool and yes, they're useful), certain ones that the owner liked (for some reason we had a set of Harry Potter smileys on the Doctor Who forum), and then someone would do a service for the forum and would get awarded a special smiley...

Honestly, it's a pain to try to keep them all in some sort of strict order, because every time you add a new one or remove one, it affects the rest of them. As long as the table didn't get too wide (this was an ongoing argument with the owner of the Doctor Who forum when she insisted on having HUGE images in the clickable section and I'd have to tell her we just couldn't have that since people were complaining about the reply field getting distorted), just accept the order they're in. Don't like it? Learn the codes. It's a lot easier.

Last part is absolutely true .

They've been in the given order for years now, so I guess everyone would be confused if anything changed .

Just get some lower-ranked mod to do it for you then. It'd be useful work :p

No, they're busy punishing annoying posters ;).

Oi, poster! Leave our mods alone!

Actually, I've been confused about them ever since the forum migrated. I'm used to forums where the smileys are in a nice compact table (for the clickables) and an easy way to get to the others (click the "more" button). Three columns of smileys on the vertical, instead of sprawling all over the place like XenForo, I can't remember which line anything's on, and some of the "other" smileys are used more often than the "standard" smileys and it's annoying to have to keep looking for them. In any Invision-style forum, the ones behind the "more" button would be a single vertical column where it would be easy to find the one you want (though still a pain to install them in a specific order).

To top it off, when you use the theme I'm using, the headings for the different sections of smileys are invisible until you mouse over them. At first it doesn't even look like there are any beyond the standard ones.

Which theme is that?

For the overall layout we can't do anything, sorry :/.
Dark CFC (WIP)

I use it because it's easiest on my eyes, but there are some problems as mentioned, and some smileys have odd pixels surrounding them (I imagine those are probably not visible on light backgrounds).

As well, when anyone uses the "code" tags, whatever's inside of them becomes unreadable and I have to mouse over them to read what is typed there.

Ah, yeah, I see the blush smiley, the trophy smileys, and some more.

If possible, please send me a reminder over Easter to have a look at this.

I would very strongly recommend you get a new suit and shoes. Brown shoes with a black suit will look absolutely awful. I also would recommend against wearing anything less formal, you'll look like you don't care.
The other answer is to get creative and wear folk dress.

Hmmm. I was thinking that, while I despise Disney more-or-less wholesale, I liked Mary's earlier avatar more than I do her current one.

I shall delete it since it offends you so much. Now I'm going to go off and cry.

I didn't actually say I disliked it.

Is this a proper time for that Mary support group we founded earlier to emerge & start functioning properly? Close taps and that sort of things before the new doctor gets home.
