It annoys me that I have purchased 3 versions of Civ3 and the save game files are useless between each version!

It's a joke!

-Civ3
-Civ3 PTW
-C3C
-Civ3 Gold
and now...
-Civ3 Complete?

Even after patching, my C3C files will not work in Civ3Gold...

So we have hundreds of thousands of people who have played Civ3 around the world and the VAST majority of them can't share compatable files!

If this becomes the case with Civ4 I'm gonna be pissed...

Firaxis needs to take a page from the MMO book or the Maxis book. Fixes are free patches, content additions too need to be free by DL or in the form of cheaper than full version expansions that leave the core game compatable with previous itterations. (As was the case with SimCity4)

Did you really expect the save files to work between Civ, PTW, and C3C ? They are very different games with added units, improvements, actions and civs.

I don't expect something to magically appear in the older version that wasn't there before, if that's what you're asking...

What I do expect is along the line of SimCity... (As I mentioned) You could open a Rushour expansion city in SimCity4 without the expansion but things would be missing.

What I REALY expect is that:
C3C fully patched
Civ3 Gold Edition
Would be compatable... Afterall... They are both complete versions of the final product.

Well.. if you have C3C (or PTW), you can launch Vanilla or PTW or C3C. The 3 versions of the game are still there and still compatible with their own type of savegame.

I don't know about the compatibility between patch, but it shouldn't be an issue as everybody can download a patch if they can send a savegame :p

Gold is the only problem, I think. I don't know what's different and why the savegame aren't compatible. Here, it's lazy design.

That is a reasonable expectation. All save game files should be forward compatible; you should be able to use older files on all newer versions. Many other kinds of applications can do that; what makes Civ special?

Yeah, between patches don't work... I think I may not have said what I was trying to say very well.

Civ Gold is a complete version of Civ with Conquests and PTW (It's at home so I'm not 100% on that, but I'm pretty darn sure) Yet a copy of Civ3 with PTW and Conquests added and then patched is NOT compatible with Gold.

That's what irritates me. I play at 2 different locations and I DONT carry a copy of the disc in my Pocket Protector :p So to play and get into a game at one location and then bring the file with me to the other location doesn't work...

Not to mention things like trying the GOTM or MP online...

I'm just hoping a person can buy the game without worrying about keeping the version compatable as I have had to with Civ3

Yeah, like I said, it's a lazy design fault.
You could install one version or the other on both computer and use no-cd crack. It would solve your problem.

Yeah, at one point I had done that but whiped one or both hard drives since then... And now trying to find a crack that isn't just some jerks idea of a prank is not so easy. :(

Gold is only the regular game plus PTW, not everything.
