Western US (Old West) Map v. 2

Western US (Old West) Map & Terrain 2016-10-05

Putting the Mississippi there will necessarily truncate the plains, losing most of Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Dakota, but that could be a good thing for game play...
The plains were so important for the history of the West it would be a shame to truncate them too much. Perhaps you could compromise by compressing the plains some & compressing the high plains/mountains some.

Played a few turns as the Americans, having towns ranging from Sacramento in the North, to San Diego in the South.

First, thank you Balthazar for eliminating Los Angeles. For years the LA Times would erase San Diego from maps of California they published in their stories. They would even go so far as to change the name in a story if the event just happened to take place in San Diego. Seeing LA treated the same way in a Civ III map does me good. :D

In case you, good reader, are wondering, I did get located in California. My immediate neighbors were the Aztecs, the Inca, and the Iroquois. Ahistorical indeed, but nothing to get huffy about. The one big problem was the fact that San Francisco had more people than it could support at the start. Catastrophic population crash then ensued until a pop of 1 was reached.

Then you have California's geography. Since I live here, I'll give you a brief breakdown of San Diego's topography: Start with a narrow coastal plain rising to hills in the east. Which are then bordered further east by low mountains. Further east is desert bordered on the east by the Colorado River. Further north the mountains come closer to the coast, until you get to the LA basin where you have coastal plains again. You can find maps of California, and other parts of the US west online through Google or Surf Canyon.

I like the look over all. The terrain is varied and has personality. I think this map would make a good base for a mod.

Now for a recommendation for Balthazar...

If you want to include the Mississippi in the east, try moving everything west a few tiles. Since the map focuses on the western Continental US you really don't need all that ocean.

BTW, thanks for all your hard work, I do appreciate it.

Which is exactly what Blue Monkey said. Gentlemen, I have heard you, and have successfully (at last) moved the whole thing west, allowing the Mississippi to meander up the eastern side of the map, allowing, among other things, for New Orleans, St. Louis, Kansas City, Galveston and Minneapolis. Here's a taste of it:

Look for this before Thanksgiving (after I finish the latest Steampunk biq, which is giving me fits and more fits). You're right Mythusmage; this is destined to be a mod, and a very good one at that, I'm sure. Thanks for your support.

Bring on the River Boats and Paddle Steamers :) Looks like lots of fun.

Are you planning a sort of How The West Was Won kinda scenario? I had some ideas on that from a long ago aborted scenario going from 1830s - 1880s. The Civil War was going to be modelled as a Plague! Roads used the railroads graphic and would take many turns to build and not be available from the start (actual railroads were disabled because I didn't like the infinite movement bonus). To enable trade before the railroads, the Stage Coach Station would take the place of Airports. Of course now you have the mississippi you can have "harbours" too. :)

1. Is it possible to use the map with the existing tech tree and resources, or do I need to have the terrain and resources that go with it?

2. Are you looking for exclusively Native American techs and Wonders?

Well you said you need a Wyoming consultant, Im Here!

Good timing too, were studing the old west in history.

1. Is it possible to use the map with the existing tech tree and resources, or do I need to have the terrain and resources that go with it?

Well, it really looks like hell if you change the terrain. On this map, I haven't changed the tech tree at all.

Fact is, I've moved on to the Old West map 2.0, which will be posted here as soon as I'm done placing lakes. It extends the map east and south a bit, and will now include the Mississippi River (So that we can use Riverboats!) The Old West map v. 1.0 will still have alot of use though, as the map for a possible Terminator scenario.

I'm also trying to create a dedicated railroad terrain, so that we can use Tom's shiny new train. That's the reason for the release delay.

Figure the end of the week, though. I'm nearly there.

2. Are you looking for exclusively Native American techs and Wonders?

More or less. Native American tech and Wonder ideas are what I need.

For an idea of what I've been thinking about it, see my Goldrush! thread over at the Storm Over Civ site, which I put there to make life more difficult for everyone - just kidding - I started a Workshop over there for all of the ideas that I had on my desktop that were viable mods, including this one, and I put them over there so that I could concentrate here on the Steampunk Mod, which I want to finish as a priority above all else. That's on it's third rebuild right now, but I'm hoping for a spring release.

Good timing too, we're studying the old west in history.

Cool, maybe we can use your class as a research department. Feel free to tell your teacher about our mod-in-progress. I have the following specific questions for your class, if they're interested in answering them:

1. What would your list of natural resources of the American West (from the Mississippi to the Pacific) look like? Nothing man-made, mind you. Certainly Gold, Silver, Lakes, Whales, Salmon, Salt, and Redwoods. What else?

2. What were the most important Forts and/or Trading posts in the American West? I've identified Laramie (Wyoming), Walla Walla (Washington), Bent's Fort (Colorado), and Defiance (Arizona) as the top five Forts. Am I right?

3. Look at the list of techs in my SOC post >here< that identifies technologies that can and can't be shared between Native Americans and Europeans. Can you add to any of these lists?

4. Two function-specific structures that Native Americans used were the Sweat Lodge and the Smokehouse. Can you name any others?

5. What, in your opinion, are the Great Wonders of the American West? See my starter list >here< .

That oughta start a discussion.

I was starting to pull some stuff for you out of my reference library, but it looks like you are looking to have Caseyboy97 supply your information. I will stay out of it to avoid confusion.

Thanks Timerover. Don't be hasty; I welcome any input. Let's see what Caseyboy has to say before you close your reference file.

I have already closed it. The window of time that I might have had is now closed as I am starting a new business involving the purchase of a research ship, and that is going to eliminate any free time. Hopefully, you will get some useful information from him. Given the state of the US educational system, in which I work part time, I would not count on it.

O ye of little faith... Sorry to have missed that extremely short window. Good luck with your new business, which sounds very interesting.

I can't wait for this one! :D

I just had a vision of Godzilla attacking in such a scenario...

I'm sure Balthasar already thought about a Weird West sub-scenario for this.

I'm definitely interested in this project, weird or not.
