Why Are Media Outlets Targeting YouTubers?

and got criticism from a conservative newspaper

Except it wasn't criticism, it was outright defamation of character. The Wall Street Journal called him a Nazi and that is what led to Disney dropping him and YouTube taking him off their preferred advertiser program. Had the Wall Street Journal not called him a Nazi, Disney and Google wouldn't have had any problem with him. That's a false statement about PewDiePie that caused harm to him and that is the direct definition of defamation of character. Maybe he should lawyer up and sue the Wall Street Journal

You can't link to wsj articles, everything past the first two lines of text gets cut off.

You can watch the video though, which I'm assuming makes the same points as the written article.

EDIT: And even if it doesn't, the WSJ still made the video which accuses him of being a Nazi.

Lawyer up and sue? For what? You are going to need to find a link to the entire article if you want to convince me that he is being treated unfairly.

Well the only other thing I could do for you is post a YouTube video of other big YouTubers talking about the issue, but that's second-hand information and they are all obviously on PewDiePie's side (YouTubers do seem to frequently show solidarity with incidents like this) so you might feel like they are presenting the WSJ's words inaccurately.

The gradual creep from spurned edgelord to sincere fascist isn't exactly a rare journey these days. White boys self-radicalising all over the place.

You guys, I have just realized that if you shorten Wall Street Journal to WSJ and then switch the second and third letter you get SJW*.

Come on guys - he is only sayng kill all jews. It's not like he's saying something much more hateful like punch a Nazi in the face.

The motive matters here. It was a stupid, tasteless and ill-advised joke about what people do for money, not an actual call to kill all jews There's enough real antisemitism in the world. No need to make mountins out of molehills.

White boys, eh ? Now if I was the type who is always looking for an opportunity to call people racist I would do just that.

* I usually believe that people who use SJW as an insult are at best just dicks, but I found it amusing in this context.

You'd also need to be the type with a major head injury.

Nice ad hominem. I'm not subscribed to Pewdiepie.

Um, the only accusation in the headline is that he's always been kinda racist (he might be, I don't know - plenty of people are racist, so it's not an extraordinary claim), but that's not really pertinent to this incident so I really can't say if the incident is being portrayed falsely.

Pewd? Well, from the few computer game videos of his i (barely) managed to watch, he seems to just be some kind of japanese-doll persona? I mean even his username says so :)

I could see him saying "kinda racist" stuff (though i haven't in those videos), but it is not like he is ever associated with being intelligent.

Overgrown man-child media personality takes infantile "joke" too far and is blamed for being racist. Where have we heard that before?
PewDiePie for Swedish PM?

What do you guys think?

From where I'm sitting it's morons saying stupid things about other morons, which happens all the time and can usually be ignored.

If I had to guess though.. They are probably scoring easy points with large and/or vocal parts of their target market by going after this guy. Plus nobody wants to be on the side of the weird guy who doesn't even have a real job who might have a boner for Hitler

Here's a relevant youTube video from the WSJ on the PewDiePie story:

Spoiler contains NSFW language and imagery :

I mean, maybe. It didn't end up that way, though. Felix's channel has exploded in popularity once it was revealed that the WSJ lied and presented their article out of context. He's also said that he understands why Disney ended his contract with Maker Studios; even if you don't believe the allegations, it's better to cut ties than it is to double down when the person that's representing your brand is a few degrees removed (Disney acquired Maker while Felix was already with the network).

It isn't some conspiracy against YouTubers, I don't think. Felix is the largest channel on YouTube and it would be quite profitable to be the one that takes him down.

He makes crass jokes. He's always been level with that. When he found out that some people use his content out of context unironically for their less-than-stellar beliefs, he released a statement essentially saying "pls no".

The video they cite as being evidence of Felix being an anti-semite conveniently didn't include the second part of the Fiverr video which said "subscribe to Keemstar", a noted inflammatory personality on YouTube. It was a joke. That's all it was. You don't attack stand-up comedians for every joke they make and you probably shouldn't with YouTubers either.

Since it's being assumed that you're a fan of Felix's if you don't lock arms with the WSJ in solidarity over his supposed fascism, I don't like Felix. I have never liked Felix. He has an obnoxious personality and his content sucks. I still think he's in the right in this situation and the aftermath of the ordeal is seemingly supporting that perspective.

I love this, OP starts a thread deriding the fake and unfair press for reporting an inappropriate "joke" made by literal manchild PewDiePie, and then proceeds to assume professional companies like Disney refuse to work with PDP because he was called a "Nazi." Does PDP love Hitler and hate Jews and other people? idk, he probably does based on previous videos (http://pewdiepie.wikia.com/wiki/It's_Raping_Time). We also shouldn't forget that, like many scummy lawyers and businesspeople, this man is exemplifying the stereotype of someone who has exploited things to his advantage by sitting on his ass all day doing nothing while raking in profit. I don't blame him for that in a capitalist society, but I'm starting to think that in 2017, people are getting sick of that nonsense.

We cannot sit here and accuse people of being dishonest if there is nothing to suggest their actions are dishonest. The sample size of content with PDP is large enough that I have legitimate concerns (as should others!) about what he is trying to get across.
