According to a map I have, they're kalmyks, a turkish people.

I have heard that appelsin is "derived" from "apple" and "citrus", I don't quite remember the details, but I thought latin was involved somehow.

Yea, those are Kalmyks.

Appelsin = apple-sino = Chinese apple

Pomidor (Russian for tomato) = pomo d'or = golden apple

Though gherkins tend to be fairly large in comparison to the tiddly cornichon.

If a cucumber is an aircraft carrier, the gherkin is a submarine, while the cornichon is a two-man midget job. Or one of those manned torpedo thingies.

Transylvania was full of Saxon settlers. Just look at the architecture in Sibiu for quick verification.

The people who settled that area were a mix of many peoples (Ukrainians, Russians, Greeks etc), it's a little bit hard to define them as one ethnicity.
